New Dumbledore actor

I like this film the most out of all of them. I even liked the book, but mostly because it is the perfect length! Definitely give it a read and discover (or re-discover) all the magic within (: PS: There's a naughty naughty easter egg in the credits with the footprints

FatLittleButterfly

Facts!

Great summary/explanation!

Crookshanks is the only one who always knew the rat was a bigger rat than he appeared!

Also, some context from the book about your questions: The movies cut a lot of backstory about Harry's parents. Lupin, Pettigrew, Sirius, and James Potter were the "Marauders" of the Marauder's Map (Moony = Lupin, Wormtail = Pettigrew, Padfood = Sirius, Prongs = James). James' animagus form is a stag (male deer). Along with that, Patronus Charms have two forms, the mist that Harry is able to summon, and a "corporeal" Patronus that takes the form of an animal. Harry sees the stag, and assumes it's his dad because it was James' animagus form. It turns out that it was Harry's patronus form. It was also his father's patronus, while his mothers' (at least after they got married), was a doe (female deer). Lupin did NOT help Sirius into the castle, he thought Sirius was bad until he gets the map from Harry. Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, was actually the one who helped. She isn't an animagus, but was able to sense Pettigrew was a sneaky snake (rat?), and Sirius was a good doggie. That's why she was always going after Scabbers. Sirius was able to avoid the extreme madness of Azkaban by transforming into his dog animagus form, since animals are less affected by Dementors than humans. Over the summer, he gets the paper from the Minister, who was on a routine visit to Azkaban, when he sees the picture of the Weasley family in Egypt and notices Scabbers. That's how he learns Pettigrew is alive. He sneaks out as a dog (the dementors have trouble sensing animals). He could have done so years earlier, but was depressed thinking there was no way to clear his name with Pettigrew dead. Also, the reason Dumbledore sounds, looks, and acts different is that it's a different actor playing him. Richard Harris played Dumbledore in the first two movies, but died after filming the second one. Michael Gambon was cast as Dumbledore, and this was his first movie. Sadly, Michael Gambon died last week so now both Dumbledores are gone.

Josh Lopater

I'm not sure if anyone else has fully explained this but I love explaining Time Turners in Harry Potter because it's my favorite use of time travel in any series. Unlike other worlds like Marvel, there are no "alternate timelines" or multiverses. There's only one timeline, and Time Turners create a timed loop. Buckbeak always survived, because they always went back in time. They didn't "change" anything, they just fulfilled the "destiny" of going back in time to prevent Buckbeak from being killed. Harry was only able to travel back because future Harry had already saved past Harry, enabling himself to go back in time in the future. People sometimes don't like this style of time travel because there isn't really a "choice," it was always destined to happen this way. Codswallop, in my opinion. Harry and Hermione were "destined" to go through this closed time loop because their characters were always going to make the choice to save Buckbeak and Sirius because that's their character. The closed loop only exists because as characters, they would always have made that choice, and every choice that they make while in the time loop was always going to happen (Harry saving himself, Hermione howling, throwing the stone into Hagrid's hut) because they always would have made that choice in the first place.

Josh Lopater

keen to get thru this series with yas

Seriously I’m About To Start A Riot

Over here pretending to be patient for the next Harry Potter movie, but slowly dying inside…..

Poor prongs

Ca

Not a reindeer?? 😂 you have no idea how much i laughed at that especially as a marauders fan

Ca

The Dark Arts teacher always changing is a running gag yes. You will find out why this happens later.

Valcor

Dumbledore is played by a different actor in this due to the original actors death. Funny you guys didn't really pick up on that other than noting his voice was changed.

Valcor

This is my favourite movie of the series. Idk why I just love Lupin and Sirius and I think this has the best moments. Also helps it was the first movie to be dark and mature. I remember watching this as a kid and being suprised at the tone.

Valcor

Yes if you watch the movie again you can tell all the foreshadowing and hints for what Hermoine is up to.

Valcor

Sirus is an Animagus who can choose when and which animal to transform into. Lupin is a typical Werewolf who can't choose and is cursed. Pettigrew is also an Animagus, aswell as McGonagall with them turning into a rat and a cat.

Valcor

The LOTR trilogy and the Harry Potter movies (this one in particular, cause it's my personal fav) were the bread and butter of my childhood and almost every year usually around Christmas time I always binge them for nostalgia's sake.

Ersin Günay

around the 22 minute mark of the movie where Lupin performs the patronus charm, indicates the part in the book where they learn wordless and wandless magic

ReverieRealms22

at *2:40 Stan Shunpike is brought into the story SEVERAL times in the last 2-3 in the background.

ReverieRealms22

In case you didn't realize, the feather with Harry's new broom was buckbeaks feather. Serious sent the broom to harry. ALSO it was a different actor playing Dumbledore in this one. the original actor passed away after the making of the second movie. This new actor remains as Dumbledore for the rest of the series.

Andrew Beeby

I enjoyed this reaction so much, thank you guys. I can't wait to see the rest of the movies :)

Jorge Mendez

Unlucky mate

Chris Neely

Bit random but sometime this year you guys NEED to watch interstellar that'd be an awesome reaction

Ben

None of it is working for me I paid the £10

Fred bates

i really really loved this reaction. You guys are so attentive and pick up on so many details. I haven't seen many reactors realize so soon that Lupin is a wherewolf. After watching this film series several times I realized one of the things I like about it is that it's really a long, drawn out mystery and I love mysteries. And when you look past the many imperfections you can really appreciate the story telling and the growth of the actors in their performances.

rachel pelfrey

They almost had it! You could tell they were thinking it, but the scene moved on and they just accepted it lol, no worries I'm sure they'll figure it out soon or later!

Alex Ocean

Yes I think so

Michael Weiner

I have a feeling you are going to seriously love the next two movies.

Jess

Wasn’t Remus the reason everyone thought the shrieking shack was “Haunted”??

Cjay_92

Not sure if the movies ever get into it, but there is a canon reason why there is a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher every year.

Demented Avenger

I hope S&P read the comments or the mods highlight comments which explain lore that"s missed in the movies w them. I really want to emphasise that the movies have a big limit compared to shows like Game of Thrones to do the existing source material justice. So many characters are unfortunately not as fleshed out, or their backstories not explored like they are in the book. Some characters you have met (or will meet) who are in the books much more and have minor plot lines and character arcs, are not in the movies. Theres so much that is cut already. even the Dursley's get some form of character arc and more depth to their characters in the book's compared to the movies. I highly recommend for you to read the books after this, even though it will be inferior experience given the movies will give you the broadstrokes. The story is so much better with the mysteries having more depth and harder to solve. The movies give away alot of the twists bcs they have to set the reveals up - its so much more subtle with more story in the book's.

Ammaar Ahmed

Yeah, and the fat lady wouldn’t let him into Gryffindor tower without the password.

Raga G

We need love/like/hate lists. I'm not sure about the "hate" part though. There's not really anyone to actually hate other than the Malefoys and Voldemort. Too obvious and common. Maybe you could change it to "Least favourite" since it fits more to these characters who are usually "good" but you could hate their guts still.

HDN

Also Hagrid's actor was quoted saying, "The legacy of the movies is that my children's generation will show them to their children so that you could be watching it in 50 years' time. I'll not be here, sadly. But Hagrid will. Yes!" Which is heart breaking, but so sweet.

Nick Luce

Glad you enjoyed this one the stakes ramp up every movie. Next one is my favorite for many reasons. Insane CGI

William Abbott

Spartan you mentioned you played Hogwarts Legacy, you can ride a hippogriff in Hogwarts legacy too! Childhood fantasy fulfilled when I did that.

Nick Luce

It is an actor change, and unfortunately, Sir Michael Gambon died a couple of days ago. The previous actor for Dumbledore, Snape, and Hagrid are all dead as well. Serious bummer, as they're literally my favorite characters.

Nick Luce

we had a technical difficulty and had to pause and re sync up

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Definitely the best movie of the series, with the next one being close. The rest of the movies/books are still good but you're on the peak atm.

Gemineye

Lol check out 1:10:50💀

Lyons

Agreed. The next on is great too but this one is the peak of the movies.

Gemineye

ORIGIN OF THE MARAUDERS MAP: As others explained, the marauders map came from james potter, sirius black, remus lupin and peter pettigrew. the 4 of them were close friends and called themselves the marauders. they invented the map themselves, which is why lupin and sirius knew it always worked, and why lupin even knew to say "mischief managed" to hide the map's details, despite nobody telling him how to work the map in the movie. THE GLOWING STAG: When someone conjures a patronus, it can be corporeal or non-corporeal. a corporeal patronus takes the form of an animal, one that's typically associated with the happy thought used to conjure it. it works essentially like a shield for the wielder. in harry's case, it took the form of a stag, because that's the animal his father could change into. which brings me into my next part: ALL THE MARAUDERS COULD CHANGE INTO ANIMALS: Sirius, James and Peter all became animagi, in order to be able to comfort and be around Remus when he changed into a werewolf, and since werewolves only harm humans, they were safe. By the way, the origin of the Whomping Willow tree, is that it was planted specifically for Remus thanks to Dumbledore. He did it so Remus has somewhere to turn and ride out his transformation without harming others and the willow keeps out anyone who would otherwise venture in. Also, Remus Lupin usually takes a wolfsbane potion which helps a werewolf be more mentally aware in werewolf form. SIRIUS ESCAPING FROM AZKABAN: In regards to this, Sirius was able to escape from Azkaban, because he was able to turn into an animal. Dementors are blind, and also when you change into an animal, your thoughts become more muddled, more animal-like, so Dementors mistake you for one. Sirius was able to get away with it, because him and his friends became animagi illegally. They never registered with the Ministry of Magic (their government), so nobody actually knew he was one. REMUS LUPIN RESIGNING: If you missed it, and since it's not really said outright, the person who "slipped" the truth about Lupin being a werewolf, was Snape. So Lupin resigned before parents sent letters to Dumbledore demanding Lupin to be fired. DUMBLEDORE'S DIFFERENCES: As others have mentioned, the reason why he's so different sounding and looking, is because the original actor, Richard Harris, died shortly after the 2nd movie. He was replaced with actor Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore for the rest of the films. Sadly, Michael Gambon just passed away a few days ago as well. Thoroughly enjoyed your watching of this series, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, definitely one of my favorite films in the franchise and it only gets better from here!

connie

Sirius escaped bcs he was an animagus - an unregistered one. That's not the name for the thing he turns into, that means he can turn into an animal. Few wizards know how to do it, Sirius and harry's dad alongside Peter learned to do it secretly so they could be with Lupin when they transformed. So after Sirius realises Peter is still alive (remember the weasley's went to egypt and their photo was in the newspapers) Sirius see's the rat in the picture and realises he's still alive and right next to harry. So he kinda gets some will back, after being stuck with soul-sucking dementors for 12 years and turns into the dog and escapes. Bcs he and James learned it secretly, no-one knew he was a sectret animagus, therefore no precautions were put on his cell.

Ammaar Ahmed

Lockhart wasn't a villain - he was a phoney

Ammaar Ahmed

Snape did not say anything in defence of Harry's parents, he fuckin hated James, Sirius, Peter and Lupin lmaooo - y'all ltlry thought he defended harry's parents, and therefore said you liked that character development, when in fact you just made it up lol.

Ammaar Ahmed

i also want to note - snape comes off better in these movies. He's super vindictful, spiteful and a major bully in the books. When he went after Lupin and then Sirius, it was less to protect harry. Remember what he said to Harry, how he bad-mouthed James making it clear he hated him. So by extension he would hate James' best friends. In his exchange with Sirius (whilst you guys were trying to catch up and therefore talking), you could tell that Snape and Sirius have a history where they hate eachother. So tie that into his false theory about Lupin, and you see he may have been a bit selfish in motivation.

Ammaar Ahmed

the reindeer was a stag and you did see it faintly when Harry conjured the patronus - it's less clear bcs we're seeing it from the other harry's perspective - it's more book lore or explained in the books more. A very basic Patronus is a white light shield, a stronger powerful patronus produces an animal - for Harry it was a stag - which is incidently the animal his father turned into. James, Peter and Sirus secretly learn to become animaguses durin gtheir time at Hogwarts to help their friend Lupin, when he turned into a werewolf once a month. When he had the potion, Lupin would be less savage, but still a werewolf, so James (a stag), Sirius (a dog) and Peter (a rat) would keep him company in the shrieking shack - whic is were it gets its name - bcs when Lupin transformed, people heard shrieking. Also, the womping willow that guards the secret tunnel to the Shack was planted for that express purpose. I think dumbledore did that for Lupin, so he would have a secret place to go to when transforming. All explained in the Prisoner of Azkaban book. As you can see alot of stuff, lore and explanations is left out!!

Ammaar Ahmed

shoutout alfonso cuaron

micah

not spotting immediatley that they changed the dumbledore actor to the Zaheer confusion - yh spartan ain't escaping the remembering faces allegation. Dumbledore's actor, the way he looks, walks and speaks is so completely different, how could you not see the recast lol

Ammaar Ahmed

we are eating good. can’t wait for star wars 🔥

big harsher

From a Film Making perspective this was the best in the series and it's not even close Alfonso Cuarón nailed it.

Tyson Wilson

10/10. Masterpiece. This Movie made Harry Potter legendary. The Next ones are all on par.

DrückebergerTV

They're Australian, not British.

Apotheosis

Do you really need subtitles for a film like Harry Potter lol? Just constant spoilers, it's like watching you guys read a script for 70% of reaction

Lyons

My favorite HP movie. They don't explain how Moony(Lupin), Wormtail(Petigrew), Padfoot(Sirius) and Prongs(James) are the Marauders and they made that map which is why Lupin knew how to use it. Also, Gryffindoor wins the quidditch cup this year.

Daniel Castro

You guys are keeping me fed I swear 🍽️🔥

Samatar Agon

Sirius scratched the painting because he was looking for scabbers

Seán

fun fact the kid draco pushes on the left before getting attacked by buckbeak is actually margot robbies husband lol

big harsher

I was SO SO excited to watch you guys react to this movie in particular, this is when Harry Potter really begins for me. Way more mature themes and world building. Literally made my night, and I'm gonna be waiting anxiously for the next reactions !!! So hype

Ebony

The firebolt broom was from Sirius if you guys didn't catch on, that was buckbeaks feather so harry knew it was him !

Ebony

Can y’all stop mentioning the books and comparing it like they haven’t and won’t ever read the books so stop talking about it .

JonSnow21

Thank you we really appreciate the kind words ❤️ truth be told we release these weekly because we can only watch 1 per week in our schedule, combined with editing time and revisions etc. we're really glad you're enjoying out content though 😀

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Being an Animagus is something very rare. But Sirius/James/Pettigrew all managed to become it. And they all did it because in their animal form they were able to comfort Lupin when he turned into a werewolf. In other words, so he wouldn't feel so alone.

Spongen

Sirius was able to escape Azkaban because no one in the world knew he was an Animagus. So he shapeshifted into a dog and escaped. Not even Dumbledore(this is mentioned in the book)

Spongen

My fav book is the next one - books 1-4 are all written with an overarching plot akin to a murder mystery. 4 is the most beautiful culmination of that with way more morally grey characters… but the film has very little of that, and misses some other stuff as well, however still manages to be my fav film as well! Books 5-7 or films 5-8 go from a murder mystery style to a political style which is very interesting.

Rainbow

Good summary. This film really doesn’t provide any context and is more focused on style and tone (which can be good).

Rainbow

So the defense against the dark arts position constantly being replaced actually has reasoning behind it. It's never touched on in the films, but the books explain it. Might be a very minor spoiler tho so I wont go into detail. In the book, Sirius gets into Harry's dormitory; Neville always forgot the passwords, so he had a list that he misplaced and Sirius found it (or maybe Crookshanks gave it to him, I forget). Everyone was confused because Sirius attacks Ron instead of Harry, but thats bc Sirius was going for Scabbers/Peter, who was in Ron's bed lol As others have mentioned, this movie leaves out the crucial bit about Lupin, Sirius, Peter, and James being best friends who created the Marauders Map. Their code names reflect the creature they turn into. Also, Patronuses take on an animal form that is unique to the witch/wizard casting it. Harry's is a stag because of his deep connection to his father, whose animal (animagus) form was also a stag. Fun fact: Dumbledore's patronus is a phoenix, very much like Fawkes :) The movies will only get darker and more adult from here! And The Goblet of Fire (book/movie 4) is where the story truly takes off.

Neville L

The 4th one is my personal favorite book/film! Im excited for you!

Thomas Jefferson Reyes

An Alfonso Cuaron masterpiece, such a beautiful movie, rare for big franchise movies. Wish more studios would find directors or let directors that can fully cast their vision for franchise films like this.

Dogboy

Sirius scratched the painting of the Fat Lady because he was trying to get into the Gryffindor common room so he could kill Peter Pettigrew (who he knew was Ron's rat)! She wouldn't let him in bc he didn't have the password I think. But yeah, in the books he explains he escaped Azkaban after seeing the Weasley's Egypt photo in the newspaper clipping (shown at the start of the movie) - Scabbers was in the photo with his missing toe and Sirius knew it was Peter since the friend group became Animagus during their high school years to keep Lupin company during the full moons (They were Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs - the makers of the map). Then he got past the Dementors with his dog form with the newfound strength from wanting to take revenge on Peter knowing was alive.

Grace

It was never really mentioned in the movies if I remember correctly

Heida

After Richard Harris' death, Dumbledore was recast and from films 3-8 was played by Sir Michael Gambon, who coincidentally died a few days ago. Fun fact: Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) was considered for the role but he thought it was too similar to his role in LOTR. David Thewlis (Lupin) was originally considered to play Professor Quirrell in Philosopher's Stone. Harry not being in trouble for performing the spell in his bedroom is a plot hole, especially since him blowing up aunt Marge is well known. The dementors are a metaphor for depression and were based on J.K. Rowling's own experience with the disease. As someone who has battled depression for years I can honestly say this is the most accurate description: The presence of a dementor makes the surrounding atmosphere grow cold and dark. It drains its victims of happy thoughts, memories and emotions. Every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of them. It forces its victims to relive their worst memories. It is invisible to muggles just like depression is invisible to us. The Patronus Charm makes it go away, even if it's just for a little while, and brings a bright positive energy like therapy (or whatever works for that person) does with depression. The film doesn't explain the origin story of the Marauders Map and that it was created by a group of four friends at Hogwarts together: Prongs/James Potter, Moony/Remus Lupin, Padfoot/Sirius Black and Wormtail/Peter Pettigrew. Or the fact that James, Sirius and Peter learned to be Animagi (shape-shift into an animal) so they could safely be with Lupin when he transformed into a werewolf at the Shrieking Shack (as werewolves are only dangerous to humans, not other animals). In the book we learn that Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, knew all along that Scabbers was really Peter Pettigrew and that Sirius Black was disguised as a dog. Crookshanks had even been helping Sirius get into Hogwarts to try to capture Pettigrew. It's almost universally agreed upon that the movies did Ron dirty. One of the most notable ways was how most of his best lines were given to Hermione. In the book, Ron protects Harry against Sirius. Also, when Snape calls Hermione an "insufferable know it all" Ron sticks up for her and is put in detention, but in the movie he agrees with Snape. Hermione's line "Is that what my hair really looks like from the back?" was ad-libbed by Emma Watson due to her concern over her hair. The director loved the line so much he kept it in the film. When the twins open The Marauder's Map for the first time the name Newt Scamander can be seen. He is the main character in the Fantastic Beasts series. And when Harry receives a feather with Firebolt in the end, it's actually one of Buckbeak's feathers (making it clear that the gift is from Sirius).

Heida

I stayed up all night to watch this as soon as it dropped I didn't care it was in 360p. hey guys Demi God here. I just wanted to say how much I love you guys. especially Spartan with that people in 2023 joke funny AF. I know why you guys are waiting a week to drop these but I just can't wait so much. I don't like reaction channels but you guys pass the vibe check. been following since Lord of the Rings. Keep it up and don't forget the Harry Potter prequels "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them".

Boaty Zooka

Alex Ocean

I was waiting all day for this, paid for my max subscription again, and was so fucking siked to watch this with you guys!

Alex Ocean

Dumbledore in the first two movies was played by actor Richard Harris who sadly and unfortunately passed away before the filming of the third film. Michael Gambon takes on the role of Dumbledore going forward that's why he looks and speaks a little different as you guys noticed. Kind of coincidence as well since Michael Gambon just passed away this past week as well. Both are amazing actors and served the role perfectly! The next Harry Potter sometimes gets a little criticism but honestly, I've always loved it as it's the beginning of the true Harry Potter story for me. Can't wait until next Sunday!

Vito Pagliuca

Although this is a favourite of many, this film gives the least context and explanation for anything. It doesn’t really spoil the books as the films later assume you know that James - Prongs, Lupin - Moony, Sirius - Padfoot, Peter - Wormtail are the friends and troublemakers that made the marauders map. They all became animagus (James being the stag that Harry creates an image of with his Patronus - so in his own way - he did see his father across the lake) to be friends with Lupin when he turned. The shrieking shack was made for Lupin so he could go there to keep others safe. Also time travel always brings up plot holes - this film and the book is no exception but there is an explanation in the books as to why they are not used further. - Hopefully the mods dont consider this spoilers and more helpful info.

Rainbow

Yea prisoner of Azkaban is one of the best written fantasy films of all time and fun fact if you study HP lore , Harry actually has one of the strongest patronus charms in the universe on par with even dumbledore and The acting by Gary oldman , Alan Rickman and lupins actor in the shrieking shack was phenomenal and Daniel Radcliffe becomes so good from the fourth and up as an actor , P.S it gets even darker each film onwards. Great reaction btw ❤️.

JonSnow21

Both were brilliant world class actors.

Farbod

The time travel storyline is my favorite aspect of this book. It's so much fun to see everything come together and the fact that once again the foreshadowing is on point. Also the reveal of who Sirius and Lupin and Pettigrew were to Harry's parents. It's an epic reveal, more so in the books! And as for the patronus, it takes on an animal that reflects aspects of the witch or wizard's personality. Not at first, but when they really master the spell. Harry's patronus is a stag, like his father's.

Ailene Evangelista

So, the actor that played Dumbledore in the first 2 movies died in between films so they had to recast him. Kind of a coincidence that you guys are watching the third one right now since the guy who replaced him died this week.

Pablo

This is where Harry Potter gets a lot darker and really takes off for me.

Alex

One of malfoy’s friends actually is the first nightswatchman to be executed by ned stark for deserting after seeing the white walkers in episode 1 of game of thrones!

Rest in Peace Michael Gambon, an amazing Dumbledore and an amazing actor!
