The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (THEATRICAL EDITION) | UNCUT Reaction

*We couldn't source the Extended edition for this one, so we had to watch the theatrical*

Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

Harry Potter is terrible

usually once a week for movie reactions. welcome to our Patreon 😊

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Once you’ve finished this series, go back to Fellowship of the Ring and rewatch the scene in the Mines of Moria. You’ll recognize a few of the dwarves from this movie referenced there. That scene even influenced some of the costume and hair designs for those characters in these movies

Amy Lewis

Not a rush, love the reactions and will wait regardless for the next installment... However, when are you guys planning on posting the next Hobbit reaction? Have you two already watched it and are just processing the video? New to the channel/patreon so don't really know y'alls schedule. :)

Ruhutta

OK, you made me watch this movie again, i think i read the book 5 times as a kid, and LOTW probably over 10. All i got to say about this movie is ... Less is more, more is less. These words have never been more true... I hate this movie so much. I love some of the sceenes, most of the one you summed up, buut i hate all this cartoonish falling 1000 meeters landing on something then boundsing to something else, and it never ever stops,. Ok, my rant is over. Enjoy the other two movies :)

Morten Stenseth

My parents read me The Hobbit. To think that wonderful scene with Gollum... they knew Gollum would come back the whole time XD. Little did I know the sequels had a lot more Gollum than I could imagine.

Rainbow

this film being more cartoonish does keep in line with being a kid's book somewhat

Rainbow

Not a big deal for this one that it was theatrical, there was only perhaps 10 minutes more in the extended and most of that was song lol. Also not as big a deal for part 2 if you had to do theatrical (extended still preferred) but the extended is most important for part 3 which included important things not shown in the theatrical. My personal take on this trilogy is yes not as good as the original, yes too much CGI (I don't think it was Jackson's fault as he didn't have as much prep time which forced his hand), and yes you do feel the length more BUT despite that this is still a very good trilogy and I have come to enjoy it more over time.

Andrew Roach

You're really out here acting like they won't eventually cover them. They're just gathering steam. Let em' cook, guy. Besides, it's very possible that they've seen Harry Potter and want to go with movies they've never seen before they return to old movies with new eyes.

Darth Sckolar

To translate to people familiar with judeo-christian scripture and lore: Manwe is basically Metatron + The presence of the Lord(forgot that angels name). And Arda is the spiritual land of the West, where all life/consciousness originated. It's basically a spiritual/material heaven for the Elves. Faerie/The Summerlands on Christian-Heaven steroids.

Darth Sckolar

Love the "That was a Gimli reaction" comment by Spartan, because the dwarf that said that is Gloin (Gimli's father)!

Ruhutta

I certainly can sense a bit of what you're saying here but for me the immersion isn't quite broken because they have a literal angel in human flesh with them. 'Plot device/armor' is basically bonded to Gandalfs presence. That and Goblins basically have the IQ of a 7 year old and don't live very long. Meanwhile dwarves are damn near immortal relative to Goblins and the dwarves have straight up seasoned war heroes in their party.

Darth Sckolar

Isn't Merry a Took as well? I'm pretty sure he's some kind of cousin to Pippin.

Darth Sckolar

Makes sense. The Valyrian dragons descended from the lands of Asshai have magical links to the blood of Valyria. The many kinds of Drakes of Middle Earth have no such magical bond and according to lore, definitively 'smarter' than the ASOIAF dragons.

Darth Sckolar

This also extends to the lore in real life. Call it fantasy or folklore or whatever you like but it comes from somewhere. Look at it from an archetypal, psychological, or mythical lens, whatever, but it's a thing.

Darth Sckolar

The eagles are also in a literal-metaphorical way, the wings and eyes of the presence of God. They are also a people of a sort of Middle Earth, but goodness truly rises in the face of the victory of evil. If unbeatable good did everything in the world, then it wouldn't be good, just an active all-watching authoritarian force of Fate. There is no freedom in that.

Darth Sckolar

Thank you Shannon! we really appreciate that and we are excited for what is to come!!

CpaSpartan Pudgey

the uncut is available already, the edited is still in production. will be out as soon as it's ready!

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Yeah, so much that could be dissected as to where these movies go wrong. On the point of the dwarf design though, my question is more: why didn’t they stick to Gimli’s proportions? I think they look distractingly cartoonish with their giant arms, hands, and feet. And it’s just such a weird disjuncture. I get it that The Hobbit is in a slightly less mature register (although they hardly stuck to it), but are we in the same universe as the LotR films or not? The dwarves look like completely different creatures.

Kate

Ah, I thought you meant the Mount Doom thing. It is too bad they didn't have the eagles talk, although I still don't think it amounts to a plot hole.

Where's 'The Return Of The King' Reactions?

Fabian

Spartan and Pudgey!! Firstly I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your reactions to the LOTR trilogy 😁 Absolutely loved all your feedback and curiosities. The reactions were so wholesome and honest. Secondly, I personally think you both made an awesome choice in reacting to the Hobbit trilogy. As much as there is a mixed crowd with mixed reviews on The Hobbit Trilogy it still answers some of your questions to do with the lore. The Tolkein universe goes so deep and it simply can't be covered with the two Trilogies. Only the novels and the heavy Tolkein fan base can cover the deeper lore questions. I really hope you enjoy the rest of the films and find some of the answers you're looking for. Can't wait to see the rest of your reactions 😊

Shannon

It actually is addressed in the books, one of the eagles tells the company that they cannot take them to the mountain because they are afraid of the men of Lake Town shooting them down. Not the best reason but it is still a reason. In the movies, because this is not explained the logical thing to do would be to have the eagles take them all the way to the mountain to avoid pointless travel and danger.

MrMoleHole

I think there are plenty of things to find wrong with these movies, I will only talk about this movie so not to spoiler the next two. Bilbo was underdeveloped, I liked the stuff we got with him but he is the main character yet he often falls to the sideline, there is no Took/Baggins struggle that was a big part of his motivation and development in the book. The stuff they added, while I can understand how the White Council is entertwined with the story of The Hobbit, does not affect the plot of this movie at all and slows the pacing down. The pacing in this movie sucks, it took forty minutes just for Bilbo to go on the adventure when all that needed to be set up was "Gandalf and the dwarves are going on a quest, a dragon has stolen their homeland, and they want Bilbo as their burglar". The dwarves do not look like dwarves, with the exception of a few like Gloin, Balin, Bifur, Bombur, most of the dwarves look like human men. Thorin is the worst defender as he is the leader and king of the dwarves yet he is one of the least dwarven looking dwarves in the movie. Where are the long beards, big noses etc. Thorin just looks like Aragorn 2.0. At the end of the day, these are just my opinions, I just wanted to share my piece.

MrMoleHole

Tolkien took his dragon lore from the ancient tales that he loved. And in those sagas dragons are often associated with greed, which included hoarding treasure and often kidnapping young maidens, neither of which the dragon had any actual use for. Much of the bits of lore in this trilogy that weren’t in the Hobbit book are things that were taken from the appendices of Lord of the Rings. And that is what was used to make the stories mesh together, although they definitely went overboard with the extra padding, primarily because the movie studio wanted another trilogy. If you get into Tolkien’s lore there are actually several major events that created the rift between the dwarfs and the elves. The one in the beginning of this movie was pretty much made up for this movie trilogy.

Blackeyedlily

Just FYI, the Extended Edition of this entire trilogy is available for purchase on iTunes, either as separate movies or as a bundle. I am in the United States and I would expect that would be the same in Australia, but I can’t be sure about that.

Blackeyedlily

1:32:00 “That’s like a Gimli reaction” Spartan, you’re brilliant - indeed, that’s probably where Gimli gets it from, because that dwarf is Gloin, Gimli’s dad! 2:51:18 “But it was fun to meet the… I can’t remember his name… Ra- Raga-something? The brown wizard?” Aww, Pudgey, that would be me. 😜 I’m Raga (Gopalakrishnan) and I’m also brown (skinned). Not a wizard though, just a professor. I’d love to meet you (and Spartan) someday and I’m sure it’ll be fun!

Raga Gopalakrishnan

In most fantasy worlds Dragons are known to love treasure and they hold hoards of it within their lairs.

Eli Sullivan

It’s not explicitly in the books either. It’s just the internal logic of the books and the films.

Kate

I must comment on the brilliant job Martin Freeman does with Bilbo. We get a glimmer in this film, but more shines through as the story progresses. Still loving Pudgey and Spartan.

JIM SCHMITZ

But they do not explain that in the film, people should not have to read books to understand a movie

MrMoleHole

Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took are Bilbo's parents

Charity Stephens

Bro no offense but u sound dumb as hell , I love their reactions ands I know they”ll might dislike me which I truly don’t want because I love them as reactors but Harry Potter probably will be their highest viewed videos as it is most people’s and they”ll wonder why they wasted time with a useless trilogy that most people don’t want to see on YouTube but they’ll realize eventually. It isn’t even a doubt in my mind that Harry Potter will get twice as much viewers but it’s up too them.

TheRoguePrince19

I don't think Dany could tame Smaug...lol. The next one is my favorite

Nate Terry

The "Eagle to Mount Doom" thing has been widely addressed: it wouldn't work because it would create an obvious target. The greatest advantage of the hobbits going into Mordor is that it was unexpected. As for the Eagles not helping out in other situations, I think they only come when their close friends are in real danger. Presumably they have their own shit going on, and they're not a taxi service. 😅

Kate

Hobbitses? Oh no! Spartan is turning into Gollum! 😱 Funny how Spartan really wants to get that hard "r" rolling, yet continues to say Go-lum instead of Gol-lum 😅 Quick tip for Pudgey: it's Galadriel, not Galandriel. When you were talking about Bilbo being half Took and then said that Bilbo's younger portrait looked like Merry seemed like you think Merry is also a Took. He is a Brandybuck. Pippin is a Took. I love these movies. Biggest problem for me was the unrealistic escape from the Goblins, with that wooden structure sliding down... "this is fantasy" is no excuse for that. And yes, then there's the Eagles... I think it's best not to think too much about them 😅 otherwise Frodo could just take an Eagle straight to Mount Doom, or Gandalf much quicker to Eomer, or all the Dwarfs straight to Erebor, etc.

crispy chicken

Exactly. People who complain about some things not being realistic sometimes forget what world their watching on the screen and the fact that the book being adapted was literally a bedtime story Tolkien created to tell his children. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is in a completely different outlook. That trilogy is highly influenced by Tolkiens experiences during the brutality of the World War. They aren't even close in tone. Same world, different purpose altogether.

Micheal O'Neill

Loved this. I honestly love The Hobbit movies a lot, and in my opinion they get a very bad wrap. People forget that The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is perhaps three of the greatest movies in cinema history. The fact that trilogy exists in and maintained that standard throughout is unfathomable in itself. To expect another movie to come along 10 years later, and match that quality would be VERY wishful thinking. A lot of people complain about this smaller book being adapted into three movies but you have to forget that studios have a great deal of power and The Hobbit went through ALOT of trouble during the making of the movies. Just remember, at one point we almost had all three Lord of the Rings movies boiled down into ONE movie. Then it was supposed to be TWO movies. It wasn't until the stroke of midnight when the go ahead was given for it to be made as a Trilogy. The Hobbit on the other hand is not as easily adaptable as a movie and would be VERY fast paced if they matched that book verbatim. You literally could not fit that book into a single movie and have it be of high quality fleshed out story telling. Books do not always translate well into movies, so two would've been realistic. BUT we ended up with a Trilogy. Why??? Because there are other things that lend to the overall picture of the entire middle earth story from Bilbo through to the very end of Return of the King. It is absolutely brilliant that Dol Guldur and the White Council are included in these films. It gives greater context to the overall story of the 6 movies. Yes, there are things added. Some of those things added are so fucking EPIC I wouldn't let them be removed for all the money in the world. But as for other additions that people hate on, I do not feel that there is anything BAD in these movies. There are things in the later movies, specifically the last, that people take great issue with. I myself, love these films for what they are. What a lot of people forget about The Hobbit is its something The Lord of the Rings was NOT. A children's novel. These movies were always going to be different because the book in itself is COMPLETELY different. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit as a story for his children. In my opinion, we are lucky as fans to have these and I cherish them greatly. When i was in my late teenage years i wanted nothing more than to return to Middle Earth and go back to one of the world's that made my childhood so unfuckingbelievably awesome, and these movies made that possible. This Trilogy is a love letter to The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It is a love letter to many peoples childhood. And i personally wouldn't change a damn thing about them. ❤️

Micheal O'Neill

Pretty sure back in the first lotr movie The Fellowship from 2001 they already said Bilbos adventure had something to do with a dragon.

Konrad Siggelkow

Its okay, but not worth the time investment.

DrückebergerTV

This Movie was great. 8/10. This was only my 2nd time watching it and i enjoyed it very much.

DrückebergerTV

This was a lot of fun, I'm glad you guys are enjoying it.

Dom Gray

The Hobbit was made at the same time season 2 of GoT came out , so they took inspiration from the Hobbit regarding the dragons

Adrian

im not a hardcore lotr fan, but this series is trash

Adrian

we may not forget that this books and story`s from the Hobbit, Tolkien invented to tell his son bed time stories :)

Bobon Alin Raul

The Eagles are not at Gandfalf`s will :P. Great Eagles belongs to Manwe, King of Arda, and Gandalf`s was his pupil for some time. Gandalf`s real name in High Elven language it`s Olorin.

Bobon Alin Raul

Might as well watch this lol.

Farmer John

...

Ersin Günay

The goblin fight is horrible. I never felt invested in it. You quickly realize that they all have plot armor when video game style physics takes over.

ChimneyJim

I think the ring acts less powerfully on Bilbo than on Frodo because it's sort of still biding its time when it's with Bilbo. Only at the time of the Lord of the Rings is Sauron powerful enough to actively seek the ring, which makes the ring more active in seeking Sauron. That, and the ring is fighting against being destroyed, which Bilbo never tried to do. So it kind of bears down harder on Frodo and really fucks with him.

Kate

The main reason this trilogy was not up to par with LOTR is the many production problems they had. Peter Jackson was not the original director, but came in much later to "finish up". He was so rushed by the studio that a lot was sacrificed. He spent decades on the 3 LOTR films., by comparison. I think for anyone who adores LOTR, there's plenty of references and nostalgia to counter the missteps. Looking forward to your reactions.

JIM SCHMITZ

Omg i'm so excited for this!! thanks gyus<3

Ghostcat

Please don’t feel any guilt for liking these films. As a huge LOTR fan, I still really enjoy these films, flaws and all. I watched the extended edition and paused your reaction for the extra scenes. I think you really need to watch the extended editions. You’ll really enjoy the extra scenes.

Farbod

There is an argument to be made that the filmmakers could not decide the tone of the movie, fun and goofy, or dark and serious

MrMoleHole

When it comes to understanding why the abilities of the more powerful characters fluctuates I recommend reacting to some lore videos after you are done with these movies. Its a little confusing to understand just starting out but it goes pretty deep as far as the reasons are concerned.

Isaac Floyd

I got the extended on google movies

Kage Uzumaki

Gonna be honest I haven’t seen the theatrical cut of this movie since it came out 😂 if you guys are able to source it you definitely should try to get the next two in extended editions some really solid Gandalf scenes and just some extra action and funny things. Getting ready to start the reaction now though!

Stryder Garvey

The one thing to keep in mind the "The Hobbit" is a children book as well. were "Lord of the Rings" is not. So I think The hobbit feels more silly and cartoonish

Joseph Schiller

Gimli may not be in this trilogy but his dad is.

Martin Robertson

so hyped for this!

Steven Enderley

Your getting a lot of content for 12 dollars a month . It’s unfair for you too say that when the content has been increasing . There never even used to be movie reactions.

Harun

I agree these movies simply arent worth 12 dollars a month, why cant they just react to it on their own time

Eshwar Tangirala

I just saw yesterday, warner bros and peter jackson have agreed to a new movie set in middle earth, so there may be more in the relatively near future!

J_Fley .

I agree it’s their decision it was just a personal opinion of mine not trying to slate them :)

Harun

LMAO the "Oh. But it is."

Jason Serrano

That was fast. Never seen these, should be fun!

James Woodford

I'm swallowing my pride to rewatch these for the first time with y'all. 😂 Not sure what OS you use, but I got the extended trilogy through Microsoft Store for pretty cheap.

Kate

They literally explained it in the first minutes, we got to watch the trilogy and make our own decision. Why can't they? They aren't the best movies but still enjoyable and more people than not want to see their reactions. I know I do :)

Sam

Yes they should’ve reacted to Harry Potter but instead they decided to react to this mediocre trilogy, not hating but this decision didn’t make sense to me even with the poll.

TheRoguePrince19

I would also recommend the Rings of Power series. I know its pretty unpopular around hardocre LotR fans but i think it was interesting und super entertaining.

SiegeMe

Well I know what I'm doing for the next 3 hours

Kelschman

What an unexpected surprise! I too could not find the extended edition of the first movie, so I’m glad this one is theatrical.

imperial

I feel like there are better movies they could’ve reacted to then the hobbit trilogy

Harun

Yes!!! I waited for this! Thanks for uploading so quickly!
