The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers | Reaction & Review | Part 2

'Helms Clamm'? lol

Jozzer

It's interesting the things that meant so much to people. Personally I've never liked it. At the time the movie came out (not 20+ years later when after you've watched the trilogy a million times), we didn't think Sam had the moral authority to make what we essentially saw as a Gandalf speech.

Julien

I came to say exactly this!😂😂 Having his speech cut is nothing short of absolute sin, was disappointed.

Josh Fitt

Great reaction. Thanks.

Ryan Chody

Sam’s speech being cut is crazy

Griff

haha :)

you guys should include Sam's speech at the end in the yt cut or else the comments will go crazy

Everybody says that, I thought it was miles better. I always felt having to stuff the 7 (ok 6 + appendix) books of the Lord of the Rings in 3 movies was a problem. Amazing as the movies are they just had to cut or alter too much of the story. Also by the time the Hobbit was made Peter Jackson was given pretty much a blank check due to the success off the Lord of the Rings. Size wise the Hobbit being a much smaller book allowed for a better ratio I felt of Movie vs. Book rendition.

To piggy back on this about the Hobbit and CGI it’s important to note that the technology they were using for the CGI was never used before ever on any film 5k 64 FPS HDR. So it skewed all sorts of things specially the coloring. There was only a few handful of theaters in the US that could show the films in the true frame rate and HDR that was intended. They actually had to tone it down because people were getting motion sickness from the movement. I was fortunate to see all 3 hobbit films in the intended HDR and can say that without a doubt it was the most visually stunning 3D visuals I’ve ever seen. It was essentially like peering out of a window into real life. It was absolutely mind blowing. And they did it all on the fly as they went along which makes it even more insane.

I’m so excited I have a meet/greet with Andy Serkis this Sunday at Fan Expo in Chicago!!!

I believe SPARTAN is big into gaming so it would be good to point out WETA digital was the company that worked on World of Warcraft! Weta digital is the best VFX/Production company on the planet at the moment.

Scuba Steve

That's awesome! I'll have to source some out! Probably hard to get in Tasmania.

Yeah Gandalf was basically gathering all the scattered Rohirrim soldiers/ Men of Rohan that were banished and bringing them to the battle. Also, looking at a map of Middle-earth may help to get more of a sense of where everything is.

Jozzer

Gotta watch the hobbit! It's not as good as lord of the rings but it's still decent

Will

Definitely should do return of the king in three parts

Matt rasp

I feel like you guys gotta watch the Hobbit movies after finishing LOTR, it's a bit different and you don't get the same connection to the characters I feel like, but it's the prequel to LOTR

I'm not done with the whole reaction yet, so if this is answered later forgive me, but as far as confusion on where the elves were from, they are most likely from Lorien (where Galadriel is). The main guy leading them was the one who they met when they first arrived in her forest in the last movie. And the elves Arwen was with were 100% going to the Havens to leave Middle Earth. I think the message from Elrond was just generally that the elves are standing with the men, and probably at least partially a direct message to Aragorn that Elrond believes in him and believes he can redeem men from the failures of Isildur. At least that's my take on all that

Loved the reaction! In terms of the hobbit movies, I will say this which I will keep spoiler free. The LOTR and Silmarillion were the epic stories that inspired much of fantasy today, i.e. George RR Martin said Tolkien was his idol and hugely inspired game of thrones. The trilogy does a fantastic job developing every character and making you fear for all of their lives. Lastly, the LOTR is filmed using practical effects and miniatures to achieve the shots you see in the films, trying to minimize the use of CGI to make it feel more immersive of a world. In terms of the hobbit movies, there isn’t as much lore due to it being a prequel, and in my opinion that makes the viewers feelings towards each character weaker than the LoTR movies. Also, the hobbit uses a ton of CGI, making it feel like more of a fun movie for J.R.R Tolkien fans instead of an epic. There are definitely moments where it feels epic, but it’s not on the same level as Lotr for me at least. I hope this helps your decision!

on the effects, Peter Jackson actually got with some VFX designers in New Zealand and created "Weta" a new visual effects company, and they did all the work on these three films and it was so groundbreaking they became the standard and went on to do a ton more stuff. Kind of similar to ILM for Star Wars their techniques are used all over, but Weta itself has since worked on the Avatar Movies, a ton of Marvel and DC movies, King Kong movies, Terminator movies, etc. they aren't quite ILM, but they are a top VFX studio

tsipouro! it's another greek spirit

CpaSpartan Pudgey

alright, I haven't started this yet, but did anyone count how many times Spartan calls Aragon/Legolas/Gimli either a weapon or a legend? I'm thinking this could be a fun drinking game edit: I didn't have to wait long! great reaction

Wormtongue’s reaction is an interesting one - I presume he’d never taken the time to count the cost of Saruman’s war until that moment. Wormtongue didn’t want desolation and death, he wanted personal power and entitlement. He pictured himself on the throne of Rohan with a beautiful woman and respectful people worshipping him, not millions of corpses in a burned out land. So I think he cries as he realizes his own future is gone too and he’s made a terrible error.

oh man i love ouzo with some ice

The great thing about this trilogy is that even though there are 3 movies, it is still essentially one big story, so whether you like the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd movie more, they build upon another and with each movie you get more development and more of the story, and it also builds up the previous movie when you rewatch. My favorite of the 3 changes all the time because it’s really just which part of this full story am I more in tune with at this time?

Angela

Gandalf fought the Balrog alone so he could solo the XP. Hence the level up.

Game Of Thrones’ Battle Of Winterfell/Long night was meant to rival Lord of the Rings battle of Helm’s Clamm. They were compared a lot back when season 8 was released. I think it’d be interesting to know which battle/fight sequence u guys found to be more enjoyable. Great reaction btw ❤️

Jan

Also, find a Middle Earth Map, it should help to see where everyone is.

MamaSeesa

Smeagol/Gollum is such a complex character, I love it! The actor that does his voice (and did the body work, literally crawled around with a body suit on for the CGI guys) is Andy Serkis. Serkis did an audio book version of the three books, and he did ALL the voices. It's amazing. Legolas and Gimli's friendship is the stuff of legends. I think its my favorite relationship duo. Please watch the BTS stuff, you learn so much!! Can't wait for the next movie, so much good stuff to come!

MamaSeesa

What you drinking there Spartan? Straight up Ouzo? Ha!
