The Legend of Korra 2x7 & 8 Reaction & Review

Comments

The lion turtles gave the elements, but they still had to learn “bending” from the animals, like how Wan does the dancing dragon form that Zuko and Aang learned. Also, Raava never said “your different from other humans” she simply realized that because of Wan she was able to recognize that humans are not all bad and should all be given an equal chance to be good or bad.

I really like this story and added lore, but I really don’t like how they portray the spirits in Korra. Very simple & kiddie. I prefer their depiction in ATLA, like the panda, who then turned into this terrifying monster. Also, Koh the Face Stealer. The depictions of spirits in Korra are very cartoony and silly and are shown to be evil because they get a negative color pallet and sharper edges. Great episode regardless and good reaction as usual.

the best of season 2 here and one of the best of Korra

I was so excited for you to see these episodes! You're right. It's like a totally different show. And it is SUCH a lore drop. I was glued to the screen when it aired. My main issue was the personification of Raava. For a spirit of "Light and peace" she was awfully spiteful, angry, and misunderstanding. Think of if Iroh was fighting Ozai, and Ozai claimed he was being bullied, so someone stopped Iroh. How would Iroh respond? He would probably not just be forgiving, but appreciative that someone was willing to stand up to who they thought was a bully. "No no, the misunderstanding is from me. I did not have time to give you our whole backstory. The only one to blame here is Ozai. That is what he does. Preying on your strengths to turn them into weaknesses." "But what I did was evil!" "No, my friend. What you did may have assisted evil, but all YOU did was stand up to a bully. And for that, you should not feel ashamed. I think this meeting was not a coincidence. You've shown me your willingness to help the powerless. It may be in your destiny to help me finally stop him." Like, we're talking about the guy who helped his mugger become a masseuse. Iroh is a much lighter spirit than the literal spirit of light. Raava was full of "You don't know who I am? Ignorant fool! You have doomed the world. It is your fault alone you selfish prick. Just like the rest of the humans." Even her arc ended with "You're not like the other humans. I had no idea even a HUMAN was capable of compassion." Like damn, even your apology is still an insult to an entire species. The other problem was just that it kinda weakened the significance of humans "learning to bend the elements", when it was more handed to them and not discovered from scratch. But those details are a tad harder to fit into a two-parter. So for what they had to work with, I thought this was an absolutely AWESOME backstory.

One of the most beautifully animated in the series. I think where Spartan is coming from that he wanted more has to do with the potential these episodes and lore dump opens up - personally I would’ve loved to see more of the other lion turtles and their cities/benders, how each bending “style” was developed, etc. but as Pudgey said there’s time constraints and those smaller details weren’t necessarily the point of this two-parter. But it definitely shows us what “could be” in a sense. I think sometimes fans are just greedy and we want to know all of the details because the world is so fascinating

By fav my fav episodes of this book, Wan being able to grow his relationship with Raava and that Aye-aye Spirit who disliked him. Raava's final words to Wan really hit the soul. I really enjoyed the mid-point discussion for this particular episode.

Unique

"the Airbenders having images of Raava on their heads" Wow, I never picked up on that before, keen observation!

This arc was good. Honestly I dunno where to start, but I'll try- The overarching style of these episodes felt like some old children's story, like a story passed down from so many generations that its truth would be lost to history. From the art style and shading reminding me of illustrations in an old book you'd read as a kid, to the look and mannerisms of the spirits and how they interacted with humans feeling like something out of an old fairy tale. Add the whole idea of civilizations living on giant creatures (which takes inspiration from numerous mythologies of course) and you've got a whole new ancient setting right there. Wan himself is likable and interesting, and its nice to see that the first avatar was actually quite imperfect. He was clumsy, reckless, and of course a thief, but clearly from the start you can see a little of both Aang and Korra in him, and maybe a bit of Roku if you squint a bit, tho I dunno about Kyoshi, but whatever. Also nice that Wan's name literally means "10,000", in reference to how ancient he is at the time of this story being told. Raava and Vaatu are... a little unispired, I mean with the light spirit having a soothing but powerful sounding woman's voice like Galadriel and every angel from a movie rolled into one and Vaatu having a pretty generic evil villain's voice and being prone to maniacal laughter and all to compliment his red color scheme.... Tho I am glad they went for the idea of having them not be physically anthropomorphized, rather them having bodies unlike really anything we'd seen so far. I do kinda wish the spirit of evil and darkness could have had more creative means of defeating the Avatar rather than blasting him with lasers and grabbing him with vines (like getting into his head, trying to manipulate or destabilize him, etc.) but tbh that kind of final battle probably wouldn't have been as entertaining to watch. The little details of this story are what sell it for me: the Airbenders having images of Raava on their heads rather than arrows reminiscent of the sky bison, each lion turtle living in their respective habitat, to the dragon dancing with Wan being neither Blue nor Red, separating it from the dragons which were often used to represent Zuko's duality. Wan's Avatar state when he was trying to calm the humans and spirits was just so beautifully animated, it's incredible. Really all the bending shown in this arc just looks so good, but this was its peak. Wan's battle with Vaatu wasn't the most thrilling thing in the world, as with all the flashing lights I felt like i was supposed to know the significance of, and all the stuff with Wan and Raava combining... but I will admit Wan using the sphere of elements to trap Vaatu was just such a cool way of using that iconic move. Despite us having only known him for just a short while, Wan's death was somehow just so heartbreaking to watch. He didn't die a hero on his deathbed like Aang must have, he didn't die in a grand way with his companion like Roku did, he died an old man in tattered armor, left for dead in some unknown battlefield, having lost faith in humanity's capacity for peace and good. Just like when he had to leave his friends in both spirits and men to wage war many years before, there was just nothing he could do to bring peace forever. Honestly a pretty sad note to end his story on, but with a little silver lining of hope- hope that things will get better, hope that another day there will be another chance at peace and happiness, a theme that has been around since the very first episode of ATLA.

Loved this two parter, the huge lore dump and how it hung together so consistently, while still preserving the sense of wonder and mystery. It fills in a lot of the relationship of the Spirt World to the material realm. Agree with Spartan, that we would have liked to see more, but time constraints... The animation style is spot on, really enhances that feel of a different and ancient era. This also marks the return of Studio Mir for animation, with a marked increase in quality and style. The first half of S2 was done by Studio Peirot.

Small note - the young woman Fire Sage was voiced by Sereena Williams, who also voiced the woman Fire Nation Guard who made friends with Iroh when he was jailed in ATLA. She was a huge and vocal ATLA fan, so the show runners gave her a walk on part in appreciation.

This is absolutely one of the best pieces of avatar content out there. So many hidden gems and great story telling. One of my favourite things is that Wan had to learn all the other elements in a year before harmonic convergence. A call back to Aang learning he also only had a year before the coment, and Roku saying something like "I know you can do it, for you have done it before".
