Breaking Bad 1x5 Uncut Reaction 'Gray Matter'

Full Length Reaction Guide

We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. You will press play as the number reaches 0.  Here are some popular ways people sync up the reaction with their own copy of the show:

Comments

Bryan's performance in this episode is absolutely amazing.

Jonah Bertorelli

It’s awesome seeing you guys slowly become more invested in the show and the characters. You don’t have to worry about the pacing, it def picks up speed the more it goes on but I think it was important for this 1st season to be slow paced and more intimate to invest you in the characters, esp Walter

Chaz D

Writers strike sums up 1st season vs 2nd season

William Abbott

I never picked up before that Walt literally "sleeps on it" at the end of the episode before choosing treatment.

K Murray

Maybe because he is a criminal that just killed a person ? I love Walt because he is a great written character. But come on

Rey Jr

How is Walt 6 times worse than Skylar? Stop projecting your own biases onto S&P

Hari Randhawa

Well the thing is his decision has massive influence on the family. She has a baby on the way and they have a son. Of course she wants to convince him to take a FREE chemotherapy. The great thing about the conversation was that you could understand every person

Rey Jr

Because the actors in this show are all so insanely talented in their own rights, it's easy to forget how magical they are when working together. This episode is a great reminder of just how next level this cast was from the start. That "intervention" scene is just perfection. I love it when shows take the time at first to build characters & relationships, to really humanize everyone. Makes everything that follows much more powerful & affecting.

Robin Lee Melendez

I mean they said she had good points and reasoning quite a few times. Its not like they were just slamming her, if anything they agreed with her quite a bit.

SuddenImpulse

i never liked skyler, from very early on, just her general disregard for walts feelings about everything, and wanting to be in control of HIS decisions was very annoying.

Jake

You guys are already being way too hard on Skyler. Like if she's a 5 on the messed up behavior scale, Walt is a 30 but you're treating him like a 2.

Louis Marti

Hank is a great character, he's not the stereotype you think when you first see him. Really loving rewatching this and all the subtleties and layers in the characters.

Lise

I am soooo happy to be a patron. I can't wait to rewatch this show with you both, the takes are already so on point and thoughtful and entertaining :)

Jenna

try and avoid reading the next episode descriptions at the end lol sometimes they can teeter on spoilers

micah

Walt’s Ego on massive display this episode, yikerrrsss

Isaac_

wow i cried at the scene of walter laying on skyler’s pillow and then smelling her lotion and stuff. that is just so emotional, i forgot about that scene.

kallista

Something about seeing you guys get emotional during some of these scenes brings out the tears for me whereas I was able to keep it together when I watched this originally. So glad you guys are doing this show.

James Woodford

I think this episode shows a lot of Walt’s ego and pride. He would rather cook meth instead of accepting financial help from somebody else

Rey Jr

I think it’s great that we can understand each perspective from every character

Rey Jr

What a great scene that intervention was. The monologues in this show are top 👌 notch. Also, the montages are all fantastic. Strap in cuz we start rolling after this.

Daniel Castro

And we’re off…can’t wait for the coming episodes

Christopher

Bryan Cranston’s performance in this episode was unreal.

JonSnow21

I could see it either way tbh. I think killing Emilio and Krazy 8 hardened him more than most realize. It might be easier for him to turn down the deal b/c he thinks he has another option. Hard to say for sure since it happens so early.

Munir

What you see being done to Walter here is radiation treatment. Hence the body wrap, the table to lay down on thats not dissimilar to one used for CT scans/MRI's etc. and the sounds from a machine. The most common way that chemotherapy drugs are given is through a needle into a vein. This is called intravenous or IV chemotherapy and the person generally has to sit in a chair for anywhere up to a few hours depending on the specifics of the cancer and the chemo treatment. Chemotherapy can also be taken as a pill, capsule, or liquid by mouth, as an injection or shot, or as a cream that is put directly on your skin, but by far the most common method is by IV at a medical facility.

SuddenImpulse

Ah Walter and his pride what a duo

Guadalupe Rosas

Radiation is not chemo.

Shawn Brink

S&P, time to break out the talking pillow for your reactions...LOL

David Cansler

Last slowish episode before things start getting nuts.

Demented Avenger

Crucial episode. Both Walt and Jesse were faced with the decision to take a different path. A lot of their history, motives, and values throughout the series can be traced back to this one.

Jared

God I wish you guys were further so I could binge watch these reactions. This show just gets better and better. As you've been told, you've seen nothing yet. And unlike GoT, it's a satisfying ending.

Jakob Schaefer

I am fairly convinced he wouldn't have, but thats for reasons that are a fine line to spoilers so I won't elaborate.

SuddenImpulse

Walter definitely has a dark side.

Rich Plumb

One of the defining episodes of the whole series. A true gem!

Petteri Ahlberg

I believe the creator said this episode was the most important for defining Walt's character. Taking Elliott's offer would've solved his family's problems but he chose to return to the meth. I wonder if he would've taken it had he received the offer before he decided to cook meth the first time? Very hyped for the next one!

Munir

YES!!! Now I have something fun to do today :)

John Neiberger

Let's go!! This show literally gets better every episode
