The Legend of Korra 2x2 Reaction & Review

Comments

I'm excited for you guys to see the rest of the season as there are some surprises later on that I know you will enjoy.

Kevin Spores

personally I think it's a bit of BS bcs they probably didn't know what to do with her but it leaves such an open and weird question and I think the writers realised this.

This is gonna sound weird, but the fact that Korra wasn't really justified in her anger at her dad, and that he didn't even seem to be angry at her really made me like his character a lot more, even if it did diminish Korra's a bit. Given his beef with Unaloq I kinda figured he'd kinda be an easily angered and rather rash kind of man, but I am pleased to learn that he isn't. Korra walking out of the forest after closing the portal was just such a great shot, easy wallpaper material right there. Bolin immediately running over to Korra after she gets back was so great, I mean for as dull as the guy can be sometimes, he's just so sweet. Plus its nice to see that he's comfortable enough around Korra to hug her despite their messy romantic history (or lack thereof). Now I am aware that this was probably set up purely for the sake of the joke with Eska, but idk, its still great characterization in my book. Nice that we immediately see in the Northern occupation that Unaloq has alterior motives aside from what he said, as that being saved for later in some huge twist would have been a pain. Good to know that we already have some idea of what we're dealing with here.

As pudgey said in the beginning - this feels more AtLA than s1 which was too cooped up in this mega-city

welcome to episode 1 of Korra being incredibly mean and down on her dad.

Indeed, when we see Katar encounter the entrenched sexism in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of ATLA S1, you can see the two tribes have already diverged quite a bit,

it makes perfect sense why tradition has been dropped, but Spartan saying its out of character for Katara is a bad argument. This isn't a recent thing - remember there was the 100 year was which essentially separated the two water tribes from eachother as they raced to fight andsurvive the Fire nation. On top of this there is already a big geographical divide which obv would lead to cultural differences. Think the UK and Australia. Plus Katara grew up during the war when that separation existed, for all we know, the current status of the S water tribe and its traditions (or more relaxed versions) is something she grew up with, or rather she didn't grow up in the more Traditionalist N Water tribe so less emphasis was placed on them. Also as with everything in this world, the world constantly changes, and in peace time mich more rapidly. Like in our world, alot of tradition and important festivals have moved away from their roots. I can imagine again how easy it is for the South to slowly move away from the tradition, whilst the North which has been the centre of the water tribes, kept more closer to them. Finally, what can one person do anyway as society shifts. Old people are always banging on about the goof old days and looking back - which does not stop a society that rapidly moves forward. Simply, kids do not give af!

Good reaction, I do appreciate getting a different POV on events and characters. Agree that teenage Korra and relationships can be irritating as f**k 😁, unfortunately it rings all to true for teenage angst, I have a few memories I repress myself... It is worth remembering that her childhood was very constrained and limited, so she is breaking out hard. Amazing pick up by Pudgy that actually relates to a reveal in the very last episode of the series, I'm impressed, I don't think anyone has ever made that connection. Can't say more though, spoilers...

Lindsay Mathieson

Yeah Katara is like 85 years old at this point, she is pretty up there to be getting involved in something like this. She basically just enjoying her last years and doing the occasional healing.

Love the focus on other characters that didn't get time (for obvious reasons). The soundtrack for the spirits "dancing in the sky" is just beyond beautiful!! Also in the very first episode, Katara tells Korra that its time for her generation to take over so she did more than her FAIR share.

Unique

But keep in mind that, as the Avatar, Korra is intricately tied to the spirits, so their mood seems to be reflected through her to some degree. I think that's one reason for the "Mako can do no right" attitude we saw in this and the previous episode. Also, not sure if 500 people have told you yet, but this was another "final season". Seasons 3 and 4 were greenlit together, though.
