It was my opinion so other peoples’ “yums” don’t come into the equation for me. But yes, there are aspects I did appreciate. The scenery, the makeup, sfx were all great. I think there was just a few too many super drawn out slo mo moments and slo motion glamour shot type shots on characters’ faces. Hence the cheese. I think going in, I just expected it to be more serious and possibly darker so it just caught me off guard.

I think the word "insanely" in front of "cheesy" is probably what did it. No need to yuk other peoples yum lol. All that aside, I hope you at least acknowledge how groundbreaking these films are from a technical standpoint. You said you are in your mid 30's so you're old enough to remember what movie special effects were like back in the year 2000 (these films were primarily filmed during 1999/2000)

Right. cause a bunch of grown ass men running around in 18 inch lacefront wigs and prosthetic elf ears, casting spells using made-up words, totally sounds like something meant for only mature, serious adults. Give me a fcking break, don't try to insult someone's intelligence just because they don't fancy something that you're too blinded by devotion for to find flaws in.

I believe Lord of The Rings is fully responsible for creating the fantasy genre. GoT would not exist if these movies weren't so popular, and the books wouldn't exist either because J.R.R Tolkien's books inspired Martin to write his.

You can say Elrond's quote "men of the west" can be applied to such and such, but you can't say that's the reason why he wrote it. In my first example it is valid interpretation as anything is, but it's just that, interpretation. Only that way it can't be wrong and it isn't misleading, because it's not a claim about intentional meaning. Do you realise the difference between interpretation and claiming "he wrote this because of "_______" insert historical event""??
Milorad
2023-07-15 10:15:37 +0000 UTC
Kate, im amazed that we can go back and fourth 5 times and you still don't get what I'm saying, anyone can have any interpretation they want, and apply it to whatever situation they want. They just cant claim "that's why Elrond said "men of the west"". He claims it as a fact, It is misleading and WRONG, because Tolkien doesn't want to reference real word events in that way. This is pure LOGIC, i don't know how to make this any more clear, if you still don't get what I'm saying i don't know what to do, I'm tired of explaining such a simple comment.

2023-07-15 10:05:04 +0000 UTC
You realize "dislike" is Tolkien's word? "Cordially," no less. Talk about misinterpretation. You jumped down someone's throat for what you admit is a valid interpretation, and which didn't actually make any claim to allegory or authorial intent. Tolkien wasn't against people making real-world connections to his work, hence his distinction between allegory and applicability. He just didn't want people thinking the text was coded and inflexible in its meaning. You seem to have some investment in blowing his statement out of proportion, so I'm not engaging any further.

Angelo
2023-07-15 03:51:44 +0000 UTC
It's not just dislike of allegory, he DESPISED allegory. Of course he's gonna be influenced by his experiences, that's why i said there's no INTENDED relation to any real world events, i wrote it in caps for a reason, but you didn't catch it. Tolkien doesn't want people to interpret and try to find any hidden meanings and real world references in his work. It's supposed to be lost history of the world.
Like i said, yes you can interpret however you want, no one is stopping you, it's fine, there's no interpretation that's not "valid", you can imagine it to mean whatever you like. But that would also be completely missing the point of Tolkien's legendarium.
People still to this day can't seem to grasp that someone would write a story so magical and deep, without it having some hidden meanings, they always want to interpret and in the process rob themselves of magical immersion of this world.

Aragorn is a heroic prototype with few nuances. He doesn’t have to learn and grow because he’s in his eighties, his moral character is set on automatic to do good. That’s fine— he operates as a mythic figure
Jon Snow is an internally conflicted, multilayered character who faces one moral quandary after another, right up to the very end. Duty is the death of love, love is the death of duty.
Daniel Siegel
2023-07-15 01:30:55 +0000 UTC
I was responding more to cocawren, but you said "nothing is reflected on any known real world event," which I think goes way too far in interpretation of Tolkien's dislike of allegory. For one thing, Tolkien's mind was shaped by his experiences and the world around him, and so, inevitably, is Middle Earth. I don't agree with the original poster's interpretation of the "Men of the West" line, but it's a perfectly valid literary interpretation. For just one example of how the Lord of the Rings reflects Tolkien's real-world context, the dwarves are quite closely modeled (in characteristics, history, and language) on gentile representations of Jews, and Tolkien was explicit about that.
Kate
2023-07-14 22:44:01 +0000 UTC
Im not mixing anything Kate, it can be seen as anything you want, and you can interpret it however you like, that's fine, but the fact is it doesn't have any INTENDED reference to real world events. Which is why Angelo's comment is misleading and shares false information.
Milorad
2023-07-14 22:10:19 +0000 UTC
You're mixing up allegory with what Tolkien called "applicability." Allegory is when you can map the story precisely onto another. Elements of the story are just one-to-one representations of other things--that's not what Angelo suggested. Lord of the Rings isn't allegory, but through applicability it can be seen as relevant to infinite real-world situations, including WWII in a general sense. That's what makes it timeless.
Kate

Great reaction vid! I heard you mention how some of the themes resonate with you. The story was written in the time period of WW2 and espouses the corruptibility of the desire for greater power. It was reflected briefly in the council meeting as they jostled with each other. It’s also why Elrond identifies them as ‘men of the west.’

The books and movies are both legendary in their own respects. The Hobbit and LOTR are foundational to the fantasy genre. Before this there was mythology and folklore but all modern high fantasy derives from Tolkien whether it’s Witcher, Thrones, DND, etc. The movies aren’t 100% book accurate but damn if it isn’t the best trilogy ever filmed. Looking forward to part 2, it gets epic af from here.

What a pleasure to watch this again with you guys!
Perhaps you can begin to see how LOTR echoed into GOT. One example: Strider is actually Aragorn, just as Jon Snow is actually. . .
That’s just one example. What’s most interesting about the influence, however, is how George RR Martin used tropes and themes from Tolkien in different ways and for different purposes. Something to think about more perhaps when you finish the trilogy.

Funny your half right, my late farther bought me the hobbit comic when I was 8 which was really well drawn when I finished that I wanted the rest of the story but The Lord of the Rings was “To Advanced” so he read me the fellowship of the ring at a few pages a night over the next year, he invented voices for the characters, so strider was American Country Twang lol etc - (he actually wasn’t that far of with Sam and Treebeard it turned out - he actually elbowed me in the ribs when tree beard first spoke in the films) anyway I was 10 when we got to the return of the king and he just stopped and said “if you want to know how it ends you have to read it yourself” - I begged him to carry on but he point blank refused saying I’d never learn to enjoy reading if I didn’t do it myself, so a smart heavily invested 10 year old with established head cannon and who is highly motivated can infact read the return of the king - he told me years later that he’d intended to trick me into reading from the start and that he’d practiced the pages for each night the day before so that he’d got the flow and voices right in his own head, as you can probably imagine I was insufferable with my school mates when the movies came out, obnoxiously bemoaning the importance of Bombadil and the Scouring which in hindsight were omitted correctly by Jackson.
Joe
2023-07-13 16:23:30 +0000 UTC
I have an extremely difficult time believing you read LOTR before 11 years old. 😂 maybe the hobbit but certainly not LOTR that honestly would be near impossible for a child to read, or at least read well enough to comprehend or even understand characters. It’s literally almost a genealogy book. LOTR and The Silmarillion aren’t kids books. Especially in reading level. At almost 40 years old LOTR and the Silmarillion are still hard to get though with just the names and locations.

I'm so pleased you guys are watching this, my favourite movies just after finishing my favourite series. I've really enjoyed your reaction so far, your intuition is spot on and you're already picking up on important points and really immersing yourselves already! These movies really are fantastic, I must have watched them thirty times, perfect for a marathon on a rainy winter day, perfect films in general pretty much. The books and world from which they came were intended to create a new mythology for England inspired by folklore and the author's huge knowledge of Anglo Saxon languages, the world he created was truly vast, complex and awe inspiring really - the culmination of a lifetime's creative work which laid the foundation for all modern fantasy writing. I can't wait to see your reactions to the rest of the movies!

I mean I’m dead jealous of both of them, to be able to have this experience straight through for the first time and told so well by Jackson and his team is truly something special. I can understand Pudgey as a disproportionate amount of girls decided to give The Lord of The Rings movies a miss growing up but Spartan, Dude ! 🫢 you must be way younger than I’d pictured because anyone who’s into Medieval/Warrior/Fantasy/Historical/Epic genres then The Lord of the Rings is the absolute Godfather of everything that came afterwards. Peter Jackson got 17 Academy Awards for 3 movies and there’s only about 6 Academy Awards for the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe

Ok, that was a delight, so enjoyed seeing you discover it through your eyes, like seeing it for the first time. So definitely want to see Part 2, and the next two movies, they are all masterpieces.
Re the CGI - less than you might think, Jackson (the director) used a lot of practical effects, the props department did an amazing job creating individually crafted items for everyone, even the extras. Most of the props are real functional items. The orcs etc are people in prosthetics.
They also pioneered using AI for the mass battle scenes. Jackon wanted a realistic organic feel to the battle, so each individual soldier had a basic AI running it in a simulation, reacting to the environment around, giving a armies built from individuals, rather than being directed from a all-seeing perspective.
Interesting you likened it to the Wild Hunt. The author (Tolkien) of the books this is based on, was a huge English history/legend buff, he spent decades researching tales and European history for the themes in his books. The Wild Hunt was definitely part of that.
