I agree that power scaling is a bit off, but this is how I understood it: The story takes place in a world where there has been no war for a long time, bending is used in sports competitions and in industry instead of serious life and death battles. The world has become modern and non-benders can use electricity (which so far only firebenders could). Also, chi blocking has become more popular and another weapon in the hands of non benders that changes things in the rankings. It is very evident that modern technology and weaponry can now be a big challenge in a fight, and sometimes prove even more efficient then real bending. Among the characters you've met so far in the first season, many are among the more powerful benders, but it doesn't seem that way because of: Tenzin is the oldest living airbending master – but that means he’s a pacifist, who developed his bending in a more spiritual way than in a combat way. Still, he was able to avoid many attacks from the Equalists' mecha tanks, and even managed to throw one more than ten meters in the air with his airbending. He’s also very nimble and an evasive fighter, avoiding attacks coming from the back, feeling them with the flow of the air. Unfortunately, fighting against so many mecha tanks is difficult without getting electrocuted at one point. One of his biggest strengths is actually the fact that no one knows how to really fight against airbenders, which is the same strength that chi blockers and Equalists with their mech also share. Chief Lin Beifong is probably one of the best metalbenders in the universe, but just to be clear, there is no metalbender or earthbender gifted and strong as Toph was in ATLA. One of Lin’s biggest weaknesses is her metal armor and the wires she uses to metal bend, because they conduct electricity, which has already messed her up several times. Note that she’s always attacked with electricity, and never by chi blockers, who instead charge on enemies with no armor on. But she shares her mothers seismic sense, she’s very agile and resilient, and she can do crazy stuff like sense the mechanism of a locked door without actually seeing it in the last episode. Between her and Tenzen I still think Tenzen wins in a fight, just because of his better agility. That will be better shown in future episodes. Mako and Bolin are highly skilled in their pro-bending, but limited with the old school real life bending. That is the reason why they are so good in the arena, but not really in the streets (as Spartan once noted in earlier episodes). Take note in future episodes how much their bending improves with more experience. Also worth noticing – Mako is one of the best in “bending” lightning – that’s a more common ability in LOK than it was in ATLA because of the development of the industry but he is also able to redirect it, which not many knows how to do, and he’s also able to generate it from either hand quickly with little charging time and no arm movement and is also capable of maintaining the bolt for several seconds. WOW! Blood bending is still the most OP ability one can have, so Tarrlok always win in a 1on1. But what about Korra? I think Tarrlok was right when he said to her that she’s a merely a half-baked avatar-in-training. Korra is still one of the strongest character in the story by now, because she’s a master of two elements (water and fire) and a very good earthbender. But this whole show is about Korra’s development, and she will become a beast by the end of the show. Asami is a very very capable martial artist, she trained since she was a small child. She was able to evade attacks from five chi-blockers before using an electrified glove to stun them. Her agility will be shown even more in the future. She's can stand her ground against random benders, but she cannot compare to bending masters. Against someone like Tenzen, Korra or Lin, she's dead. But against Bolin, not so sure. Amon – don’t wanna spoil anything :D Sorry for the wall of text, love you S&P and can't wait for the next episodes!

Dino Topčagić

We honestly have to put some context into some of our protagonists from each show. Our gang from ATLA grew up in times of war, they were training/fighting to survive from the moment they were born (alebit Aang being the slight exception). The gang from LoK grew up in times of peace. Bolin/Mako are just skilled pro benders, and while Tenzin is a master, he probably only learned the passive style of bending Aang might have adapted to in times of peace. *shrug*

Will you guys watch the final two episodes as a two-parter? I recommend it that way, I think they even aired the last two episodes together.

Stefan Gheorghiev

Great reaction, you both are too funny! I had the same reaction for a split second too Pudgey, his voice throws you off at first! I think you having your concerns about the bending levels at this point in the show is a legit one, but I promise this show does everyone justice, I really love this show! While ATLA will ALWAYS be my favorite show ever, this one really is a great show, and I’m glad for the most part you’re enjoying it!

Stephanie Hundley

Spartan, I'm digging your crewneck sweatshirt brotha, I'm searching high and low for one

SoFreshSoGreen

it's just our banter dont worry we had a good laugh!

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Agree on that. Also Aang was an absolute prodigy, getting his airbending tattoos at 12 and he was right with his first confrontation with the firebenders: no one alive at that point other than a few of the super olds had ever fought an airbender, so being confronted with the youngest master ever who was also the Avatar was pretty one sided. While Lin is Toph's daughter, Toph literally interacted with the world through earthbending and was taught by the OG masters. She invented metalbuilding, so chalk that up to another "no one is prepared to deal with this". For Bolin and Mako, they are untrained in high-stakes blood draw combat, but unlike the OG Team Avatar, they're brothers who've been training to fight together for potentially years and have risen to the top of the tournament from the street. That may not translate exactly into fighting, but there are tales told about unfortunates who've tried to mug boxers, MMA fighters, and martial arts champions, which would be comparable to Bolin and Mako, and if they've been lucky, they've limped away with their lives. The main frustrating thing with Korra is that the Equalists have that one hit taser fight that takes out anyone who is inconvenient to the plot and renders Lin and the rest of the police useless.

Shannon Bey

totally fair. I guess what I mean more is I want more distance from the og show.

Ad

Awww be nice to Pudgey. I had the same reaction to his voice and "General Iroh". Doesn't have to be Zuko; it's still amazing.

Shannon Bey

Nate I have to agree with you. I think its also important to keep in mind that the entire equalist force is DESIGNED from the ground UP to be able to fight and defeat benders. They have skilled chi blockers (who have taken down even some of the strongest benders in ATLA), they have technologically specifically to take on Benders, and Mechs designed completely to take on benders, and they were also upgraded after the first fight. They are always outnumbered generally as well, so add all those together with the points you made, and it makes sense.

SuddenImpulse

The end credit music is definitely fantastic.

SuddenImpulse

No, she just didn't want to carry all of them at the time. She purposefully slid them off, she wasn't unable to handle the weight.

SuddenImpulse

I think the airbending kids also had an advantage because they basically ambushed the Equalists.

SuddenImpulse

We have had great leaps of technological progress like this in a similarly short about of time in real life, so its definitely possible. I understand what your saying though.

SuddenImpulse

You make compelling points. Personally I don’t think power scaling is the issue either. I don’t think it’s that they get beaten, it’s how. Atla get beaten quite a bit but it’s usually after a back and forth battle where they’ve shown all their might. Or someone tricking or surprising them like tai li the first time. Here it feels like the fight barely gets started, and then they get taken out very easily in an anti climactic way. I believe this is probably due to them not having as much time to linger on these battles. Like for Lin she should’ve been able to strike a big blow to the ship before being captured instead she does minimal damage and is easily captured

Don't know if i buy into your critique of the power scaling. This isn't DragonballZ. Zuko was 16-ish when he defeated Commander Zhao in an Agni Kai back in Book1. Azula was obviously a powerhouse. Aang was alrdy an Air Master. By the end of Book3, Katara was one of the most powerful waterbenders. If we take the Avatar universe philosphies seriously, then Tenzin would be a pacifist to a small degree and would not be engaging in combat all that much, so having mastered airbending doesn't necessarily equate to fighting well. Also, he's fighting Mecha suits (for the first time). Lin literally wiped the floor with the foot soldiers, it wasn't until the shock sticks that she falls. I would point out that the mecha suits, gloves, and sticks were invented by the equalist to make the fight more EQUAL! They have to work in order to make them formidable foes.

Nate Terry

I feel you guys should react one time to the end credit music. It is 🤌👌

Daniel Castro

That second take was perfect Pudgey.

Daniel Castro

She had an offscreen training montage lol

Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen #1

agree with everything you said! I'm liking how so far they aren't doing the annoying typical girl turns on the other girl in the situation. Asami has been good with Korra it's Mako that's the issue.

LMAOOOO pudgey's reaction to zuko's VA was gold

Ezgi Cinar

side note - i get asami's tantrum. mako DID technically keep the kiss from her. also she's a girl's girl, you can see that bc her anger is directed at the right person here

Ezgi Cinar

AYYY PUDGEY STARTED THE INTRO THIS TIME GIRL POWER LETSGO

Ezgi Cinar

Great reaction I’ve been loving how invested you guys are getting in Korra its character trust me the haters are wrong this show is a masterpiece 😂. You guys had a really interesting reaction this time though. I’ve never seen someone downplay Makos actions during this season honestly people usually get PISSED at Mako. And while I never hated Mako for it he cheated when he “kissed” Korra and has been having feelings for Korra so he is lying to Asami and she is reacting the way any spouse w/should. I just thought it was interesting that you guys are like ehh and some ppl hold it against him the whole show. And tbh Asami does know there is a bigger mission that’s why she’s being a good soldier and still going along even as she is disrespected. She should be given credit for that not criticized. She is still helping them but she doesn’t have to have to be happy ab Makos behavior and I would have an even worse attitude 😂 I agree/disagree about certain characters getting knocked out a lot but I’ve definitely heard that in the past. I love how u guys called the lin sacrifice it so sad but her character is still amazing. Great reaction!

Kamau Catching

Well the counselors are meant to be wise, not strong. But you do have a point because other than Tenzin they're not wise either xD

KaijinGarou

Hey maybe Zuko wondered how it felt to be frozen in ice for 100 years and made the test himself 🤣

KaijinGarou

Wasn't Naga unable to carry all four of them a couple of eps ago?

KaijinGarou

Tenzin took very serious his duty to repopulate the Air Nomads.

KaijinGarou

The soundtrack is sure a thing that remains consistently great throughout the entire show

KaijinGarou

Asami's carbending 🤣

KaijinGarou

Yeah Tenzin has the durability of his father lol

Zeek

Lin the GOAT

Invisigoth99

The way I see it with the power scaling is I don't think we see Tenzin Or Lin really struggle until they fight the giant robots or that one guy with the shock sticks and for Tenzins kids doing better than Lin, Aangs whole team consisted of only children and they were taking down fully trained warriors so I don't think that's too crazy.

Brave4

Though the show goes by fast (I get it now having heard the bts drama) I love the themes and story being woven. I would've preferred though, that this universe was set maybe hundreds of years or even a thousand years after ATLA. It feels like way too much western influenced modernization for such a short time. Also I'm actually loving Korra and Asami. Bolin is amusing. Mako...idk I'm not vibing with him. Korra I love the emotional and inner turmoil, the struggle to spiritually connect. Such a good arc for her. I love that Asami was willing to make the biggest sacrifice any of the characters have made, turning on her father for what is right. Not many would make that decision so quickly. I don't blame Asami for being frosty with Mako. He's a terrible boyfriend. Hopefully she moves on. From what I've seen I hope Korra moves on too but I get if she won't.

Spartan, remember it’s The Legend of Korra not The Legend of Tenzin. Korra and team avatar have to remain as the “top dogs” compared to the other adults who you may believe should be stronger. But I don’t think that would contribute to the development of Korra as the avatar, if Tenzin takes them out of them before team avatar show up

Alicea J

Great episode! So bummed out Lin got her bending taken away. She was a weapon in that last scene. Don't worry Pudgey, we ALL freaked out when we heard Zuko's voice on General Iroh! It's nice to hear and remember it was years after ATLA that this episode aired, so the excitement was REAL!

Eddie House

Thank you for the upload! Just finished homework and was going to call it a night. It’s 11pm here in California. But I’m going to reward myself and watch LOK and watch GOT tomorrow 😊
