The Legend of Korra 1x3 Reaction & Review

One thing to keep in mind with Legend of Korra is how it was essentially treated by Nickelodeon as an underdog series from the jump. It was originally only given a single season run, so this season is a bit self-contained as it was possible that it was the only season we got. When it was renewed, it was only renewed for a Season 2, so it once again sought a self-contained story arc. After Season 2, it was renewed for a 3rd and 4th season so those last two seasons had a bit more of an opportunity to world build and take it’s time setting up a longer-form story and tying all the seasons’ arcs in one nice bow. But like with everything else, don’t expect the plot or characters to track the same way as Aang’s story.

Guys my suggestion would be to stop comparing this to aang’s story as much as possible. I see you enjoy the story by now but part of the reason most people didn’t like Korra was they were looking for deeper connections with Aang’s story and when they didn’t get it, they were disappointed. This is a story of its own, that is why it is called the legend of Korra and it tells a very different and a complex story which is about Korra. There is no connection most of the times with the old crew other than what you already see.

Excellent points Brock.

Uhm, first phone was like 1876, first car was 1886, and the first TV was 1927 about 50 years after the first phone. Which is still less time than it was between korra and atla, seems to almost make perfect sense besides the airships 😂

Yeah people underestimate how much the world shifted in a few decades at the end of the 1800's into the early 1900's. The Empire State building was going up by something ridiculous like 2 stories a week or some shit. Once electricity was discovered/harnessed, advancements started to happen very rapidly.

Trent_88

I agree shit made no sense, lightning bending was supposed to be something advanced benders had, now freaking random construction workes can do it? Wtf? And how does it go from normal avatar to an avatar that has access to cars, phones, cable in just one cycle?😀😀

Eshwar Tangirala

I mean to be fair the have people with superpowers that can control the elements. Imagine how much faster we would have advanced. Developing machinery and building supported by Earthbending? Industrialisation made faster by firebenders? Fire bending is almost free energy. Add to that the art lightning bending. No need to mine for sources of energy, just groom the next generation of firebenders to lightningbend. And Water bending probably made sea travel much faster too

I mean think about how different nyc is from 1850 to 1930 ( and it’s a cartoon).

my biggest issue with Korra is how much rapid progress has happened. Everyone can lightening bend, in 80 years a city was built from scratch and became the centre of the world, there's cars etc. And whilst some of it is realistic, that means the next avatar will be probably around when the Internet is invented lmao- will his struggle be dealing with hate comments on their version of YouTube. And actually some of the tech development superseded our world development such as the climax of the entire show. I'm not against them showing the tech development, I just wish it was a a little slower and more realistic.

Amon is a really interesting villain. His motivation makes sense given his backstory. It will be interesting to see this conflict play out since he does kind of have a point. Bending creates such a power imbalance that it allows nefarious benders to abuse non-benders. It’s hard to really argue that taking the bending away from the mafia leaders is really a bad thing. On the other hand, benevolent benders have added a lot to everyone’s lives through the construction and innovations made possible through bending. Also Korra’s strength is insane.

Yeah I like how they are going into it with an open mind and picking apart ideas rather than shooting it down. Other reactors get blindsided by ATLA Nostalgia.

You guys are doing really great with your discussions, not gonna lie you’ve already brought up so many points in terms of the post-war world that I’ve never thought about

Franky E

So this is the point where I can mention something. In ATLA, we spent 3 seasons against an an imperialist nationalist regime. So pretty much as far right as it gets. Within their borders, "The fire nation is the greatest nation in the world" and "We are only invading them to help them" and "They hate us for our superiority." So far in Korra, we have seen Amon and the Equalists. What do THEY want? The idea is they want to stomp out bender privilege. They even have their own version of the flawed narrative like the fire nation had. "Bending has been the cause of EVERY war in EVERY era." Definitely an oversimplification, as the 100-year war was about imperialism, not bending, for instance. But they created a boogeyman - bending - and they can use whatever mental gymnastics necessary to use bending-oppression to explain anything and everything wrong with the world. I mean, personally I'm kinda on their side in this scenario, since it is basically superpowers dished out at random by simple luck of birth. That concept never set right with me. But Mike and Bryan nailed how it can become toxic. You go from an astute critique of society that has indeed caused issues, to viewing EVERYTHING through that lens.

In terms of lightning and metal bending becoming more widespread, I think it all comes down to the fact that they’re in peacetime, and what was once rare and exclusively art forms get passed down and taught to more people and becomes more widespread, knowledge doesn’t have to be hidden anymore because there’s no global conflict. And especially in the Industrial Age, the benefits of lightning and metal bending are immense so you would WANT as many of those as you can because of the technological progress you could achieve.

Franky E

My head cannon with lightening bending is that it is a rare bending style, but it was kept under wrap by the royal family in ATLA, so the general fire nation never got to train/learn how to control it, but now for lord zuko has opened the ability up again to normal fire benders

U have to stop looking at Avatar Aang as if he aged normally. Aang was trapped frozen in ice for 100 years, so even though he appeared to be younger than Katara he was actually 100 years older than her. Think about when his body starts to mature…compared to a normal 60 year old man, Aang’s body would be 160 years old. It makes perfect sense that Katara would outlive him especially in a world where Avatar Kyoshi lived to be 230 years old.
