You're right, it is really interesting to get backgrounds on the bending cultures and how they train and the philosophy behind it, especially the airbenders.
And good point re Korra - she's been a prodigy since birth, used to succeeding at everything she attempts, but in a very isolated environment. Her first exposure to failure and others at her level is very challenging.

You mentioned the step up in Animation of Korra to ATLA. I wanted to note that because the Legend of Korra was initially only going to be one season as a sort of special event it had a large budge and does have 'extremely' high animation quality. The other seasons still have great animation (with the exception of the first half of season 2 but I'll explain that when you get to it).
But for some context I have Legend of Korra fun fact number 2:
A show like My hero Academia has roughly 3000-4000 drawings per episode. But the legend of Korra sits above everything averaging 18,000 drawings per episode. It is why the show looks so fluid in the way that everyone moves and can make some of the action truly S tier.

What I find cool, and is especially highlighted with pro bending, is that instead of having specific elemental styles, they started mixing them up in a way that would seem natural from a bunch of cultures getting together. The styles get more streets-y in the city, and the pro-bending styles especially are taken directly from MMA.
But the choices of styles themselves show a bit of a world that has lacked an air presence. Styles like kickboxing that are more about stance and providing force.

The thing is, I feel like Tenzin takes more after his mom than his dad. And I think this shows up in how he tries to teach.
While Air might be more "gentle" a lot of times, I would say "patience" is a virtue I would associate more with Earth and Water. I feel like Air and Fire would be the more impulsive, restless elements.
I've been doing some worldbuilding of my own. But one of the KEY things about my airbenders is that there is essentially no "bitter work". In fact, for most of them, the difference between "work" and "play" is a very vague distinction. This is actually based on hunter-gatherers. It's hard to tell how much "work" hunter-gatherers actually do, because many of them don't even have separate words for "work" and "play", because it is all "play" to them.
Monk Gyatso personified this perfectly. While the other masters very much did not. In this case. And I feel like Tenzin struggles with this.
Toph said "There's no clever trickity-trick that'll move the rock." But for air, it's ALL ABOUT the "clever trickity-trick" and the "different angle". I feel like if anyone knew how to teach this style, it was Bumi. They tried to attribute it to Earth, but I think that was just Bumi being balanced as a white lotus member, rather than a purely-earth character. "A bunch of tests that rely on rethinking your assumptions, trying oddboll methods, and using some weird technicality" pretty much screams Air.
And I think that's why Tenzin has trouble teaching air. He's trying to teach a specific method, a standard routine, trying to make Korra learn HIS way.

Meelo's line: "Yeah! You're a terrible teacher, Daddy!" gets me every time. The start of this episode is reminiscent of "Bitter Work" from ATLA when Aang and Zuko are trying to learn a bending style opposed to their personalities. I think the connection between personalities/philosophies and bending styles is one of the most interesting things about this universe, so I liked this part a lot. Korra is impulsive, confident, and headstrong. She lacks Aang's tranquility, introspection, and patience which makes airbending a challenge for her. Continuing the idea of personalities and bending - when Aang failed at earthbending, he reacted with self-reproach, isolating himself, and meditating. When Korra fails at airbending, she reacts by getting angry, lashing out, then finding a distraction. I think the difference in how they react is really interesting since it highlights why they're failing in the first place -- Aang needed to be more self-assured and confident, Korra needed to be more tranquil and focused. I like Tenzin a lot. He has a temper but is also a master of controlling it. He seems much more serious and rigid than his father, but you can tell he is a sweet guy who cares a lot about people.
Interesting how Tenzin thinks the bending sport is a "mockery". In the brave new world of republic city, there's definitely a tension between respect for tradition and innovation that I'd love to see explored through Tenzin and the rest of the cast.

One thing I love about TLOK is seeing more of air nomad culture and airbending training - we saw all the other elements in the TLA so I thought it was really great that the air nomads get their time to shine

IMPORTANT MOD MESSAGE SPECIFIC TO LEGEND OF KORRA- READ BEFORE POSTING:
********************************************************************************************
If you want to say you dislike or like it **WITHOUT** going into details that's fine, but traditional spoiler rules apply for LoK. We must maintain BLIND reactions and opinions for the Legend of Korra content, just as we did with ATLA. That is what people are paying and watching these for.
We are well aware of the heavy debate about these two shows. Please keep the ATLA vs TLOK debate and controversies to our community LoK discord channel AND ONLY THAT CHANNEL. We want those paying for Korra reactions to have an enjoyable time within the community and throughout this experience, and not have to sift through a bunch of hostile and aggressive debating or attacking the show. It just ruins the vibe and the fun, and if enough of it occurs it can also color S&P's reactions and cause them to be less natural, the very thing we are here for.
Thank you!
