I love the way they contrast Katara and Hama's perspectives on bloodbending - to Hama, it's a vital tool in a waterbender's toolbelt. To Katara, it's cursed knowledge, something she can't completely cope with knowing she's capable of.

Fabbrizio Plays

Hama is understandable. She only got it wrong by taking it out on civilians. Went too far there. At least she could have been kidnapping soldiers...

I don't think I've heard Pudgey curse before this (or at least not as often!)

Unique

Hey, Spartan and Pudgey if u have not seen Breaking Bad yet that would be a banger show to react to! It really is one of the best tv shows out there, rivaling GOT and Avatar

MrMoleHole

Korra would definitely be a show I'd continue my sub for as well as (kinda underrated with the anime community, but Ranking of Kings would be one I'd sub for too

Jay M

Yeah I realize they all have pros and cons but when I said superior I meant in terms of versatility. Water bending has so many other types of bending styles that steam from water bending. It’s like almost anything that’s a liquid could theoretically be used in water bending. I don’t believe the other bending styles are as versatile. Can I ask why you side with air? Genuinely curious, it’s always been my least favorite.

Alicea J

yep we certainly will announce some stuff soon! keep your eyes peeled

CpaSpartan Pudgey

Just a heads up guys, but you are getting to the end of the 2 main shows that people are subscribing for here on patreon. It would be an excellent choice to start another series or at least announce one that pushes patreon support on the main channel. That way you can kind of replenish the people that will leave at the end of avatar plus the people that will leave for the end of GOT because of their feelings on it. Just an idea cause I want your patreon to succeed moving forward

I err on the side of air in that debate. But the point is more or less that none are particularly superior. They just have different matchups, and advantage different personality types. Fire favors the bold and the passionate. Earth favors the stubborn and the direct. Water favors the adaptive and usually nurturing, but often (as in this case) the insidious. Air favors the idealistic and outside-the-box. They obviously overlap. But there are usually clear personality traits. I have my whole own world I've rebuilt from the same concept as the show, and it really delves into the details. Air itself has like, 5 groups besides monks, and tons of new styles. But I may be biased towards what I consider my own element. lol.

Yep. I always saw it as a lesson about revenge and things like declaring whole groups "the enemy". The fire nation military kept her as a prisoner, not the people of this particular village. She is taking revenge on people who probably aren't even aware that this sort of thing is happening, let alone having the political power to stop it if they did. It helped a lot in understanding our involvement in the Middle East. On both sides. 1. That even though we were "at war" with groups over there, that doesn't make bombing civilians OK. Nor discriminating against people who came from that region. 2. That even though the US was over there, if we disagreed with things they were doing, the best we could do as US citizens was vote and protest. 3. Culminating in a sharp reminder that it isn't so much "countries" that go to war. It's governments. The civilians are often just trying to live their lives with the cards they've been given. Stuff I consider with the stuff going on between Russia and Ukraine. And why I despise people who attack Russian immigrants simply because of what the government of their former country decided to do. I despise the concept of "collective guilt".

Jonathanese

Underrated moments: - The boat Hama lifts is the one boobytrapped in the pilot. - Katara using a straight-up Earth technique against Hama. - "It's like my brain has a mind of its own!"

Jonathanese

Curious to what the other one is but I think I have a guess!

This episode legit makes me tear up a bit and feel hollow by the end with Katara's tears. I see Hama as a Created Evil, a traumatized concentration camp survivor who has lived for decades off of rage and the pain of her enemies as her only consolation. Hate is the only emotion left in her. Or it was until she saw Katara and Sokka. I imagine all of the love she had for her people came rushing into her like like streaming lights in a dark void. Immediately she wished to cook for them, to be motherly, to bring Katara into her legacy, to mentor the daughter that was denied her. And it ends with Hama forcing Katara to rape her own soul. It's heartbreaking. Katara is essentially an angel, and she had to willingly CHOOSE to unlock an ability within her that will remain like an open wound. An ultimate power which goes against everything she is and will forevermore threaten to corrupt her absolutely. Devastating.

lmfao true

Great episode y’all, couple things to note is that this episode came out back in the day as a Halloween special hence the creepy vibe. Also, when Katara is fighting Hama and blocks the water that is believed to be her intergrating earthbending forms/style into her waterbending. She is learning and being resourceful just like uncle Iroh did with redirecting lightning.

JT_45

I still think it’s air

JT_45

no we didn't but now we do! thanks for pointing that out, thats a cool little reference

CpaSpartan Pudgey

they just have to keep her hands bound up at all times during the full moon....

Ietseatapples

Well they probably know now that she can only use her power during the full moon

Adrian Neagoe

Awesome episode....however, my only beef is that Hama literally told them she escaped prison using bloodbending. So what do they do with her? lock her up in prison again? lol.

Nate Terry

They are approximately the same age, give or take. That woman depicted with Katara's hair loops was Gran Gran. Hama said the raids started over 60 years ago. Back in Book 1 episode "Waterbending Master," Master Pakku told Katara (after their match) that he carved that betrothal necklace 60 years ago. then Gran Gran fled to the southern tribe.

Nate Terry

Also, I hope S&P caught that the fire nation ship Hama froze in the flashback is the same one from the very first episode- the one where Aang set off a booby trap and caught Zuko’s attention. Full circle!

Brittany Proffitt

remember to keep in mind that she can only blood bend during a full moon. Its a good lesson in world building... if you are making a magic system, having rules that keep it from breaking is really important. Otherwise, you would be questioning why Katara isn't bloodbending in every scene.. I know she has issues w/ the morality of blood bending, but it would be REALLY pushing it not expect her to use it in a pinch. Thats why it was very smart for the writers to put restrictions on it.

Ietseatapples

This one is always so creepy.

Brittany Proffitt

Lmao

Josh

I have waited since episode 1 of season 1 for this episode and another one! Lets go!

SuddenImpulse

Something I love about this episode is that it helps illustrate that things aren’t so black and white. The series isn’t just “Fire = Evil” and “Everyone else = Good”. There is good and evil in every nation and in everyone!

E10

Loved this reaction! It’s great when Spartan gets all fired up 🤣 Katara is my fav from the series she is such a badass

Daniel Jackson

This was the episode that made me realize that water bending is the superior bending style

Alicea J

Hama literally has to be older than sokka/ katara's grandma! In book 1 we learn from katara that the fire nation ship in their tribe has "haunted grams since she was a little girl", in the clip of hama and the tribe fighting back we see they were the ones that froze that ship there! So, that tells me sokka/ katara's mom wasn't even born at that time LMAO

Jermaine Glodd

This is one of my favorite episodes
