Hmm Steven doesn’t sound like a Fire Nation name lol

Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen #1

My theory is that someone from the White Lotus somehow smuggled it in for him.

M. Miel

Fair confusion though because Katara and Roku sure phrased it like that.

KaijinGarou

It's worth mentioning that Iroh was just trying to make a point. After all, being the descendant of both Roku and Sozin isn't enough justification for anything and I like it that way because I'm not fond of getting characters progress because of fate instead of logical development. Let's not forget Azula's got as much Roku's blood in her as Zuko, so definitely not a definitive factor. And I'm very happy it isn't.

KaijinGarou

Yes, mine as well. Also its been mentioned in the show, but Zuko's grandfather from his dad's side is Azulon. Whose father is Sozin.

Jay M

HAHAHA excellent callback!

iOmegaTron

Prince Zuko, you're really going to get a kick out of this... The crown was in my sleeve THE WHOLE TIME

Munir

I'm still wondering where Iroh was hiding that crown while he was in prison...

iOmegaTron

Definitely one of my favorite Avatar episodes. I love the reveal that one of Zuko’s great-grandfathers was Roku. And just FYI, you guys are confusing the great-grandfathers with the grandfather whose death made Zuko’s father Fire Lord.

Blackeyedlily

Very true and good thing to point out. This is something I see many people get confused on.

SuddenImpulse

Yes! This is correct. It is opposite from the Avatar’s personality not their natural opposite. Each element represents different things. For example earth is stubborn, grit. Air is calm balanced peace.

Destinee Yang

The Search comics clears up why Zuko and Azula were treated so differently by Ozai.

Shannon Bey

Momo is supposed to be Monk Giatso

Mzuka

Not sure anyone has mentioned this but, 1 thing to point out, the element the Avatar struggles the most with is the one nose opposite to their personality NOT their native element. Sang is most opposite to Earth, Roku water and…well you’ll see more.

Tiang Maphosa

if you remember in episode 7 book 2 "Zuko alone", his mum said "never froget who you are" at the end and in that same episode when his mum said that, he did go on to prove & show pride of his identitiy as the son of the fire lord, the bad side, and everyone in the village cursed on him. now we know he has 2 sides in him, so....👀

Coniston

I'm not sure if this is confirmed or not. But I know the animal buddy is very much an Avatar thing. But in my headcannon, the avatar buddies reincarnate with the Avatar. I can think of EXACTLY who momo would be an incarnate of. But I'll save it for another stinkin time. Also in my headcanon, Azula and Zuko didn't share a mother, but that Ozai had a child with another woman and probably didn't reveal it to the kids or anyone outside royalty. (Though there would have been talk around the palace of "Why wasn't she showing?") Perhaps he didn't know of her family history until later, and wanted to make sure he made an heir without ties to the Avatar. It would explain why he favors Azula so much, treating her as his de-facto heir, and was quick to despise Zuko. It would explain why Zuko's mom was so doting on Zuko, but seemed distant with Azula. And it would explain why this Sozin/Roku connection is so important in Zuko specifically. And then it adds a bit of extra dimensionality to Zuko and Iroh's relationship. Beyond seeing Zuko's kindness and leadership potential, a grand lotus (shown in S2) might have had an extra bit of interest in a singular descendant of Sozin and Roku. LMK if I need to edit or remove this for any proxy-spoilers. I tried to be careful to stick only to information known prior to this episode.

Yeah. Most reactors were like "But he came to help. Why did he just change his mind? Major plothole." Or "Ugh, so he was just there to make sure he died." But even when I watched this when it originally ran in High School, I could FEEL was was going on in Sozin's head. (That and they kinda narrated it.) He genuinely wanted to help an old friend. But then as he saw his friend dying, the possibilities really started to open up in his head.

Jonathanese

I kinda wish they would have split this story into two episodes. I would have loved seeing more detail. - More of Sozin's perspective. Have him see some struggling Earth village and be like "we have to help somehow". And then watch as this concern slowly turns into an obsession and imperialism. Each time thinking "he's not gone yet" until his ultimate betrayal. - See more of Roku struggling with water. We haven't really seen much about the mentality gap like we saw between earth and air. Immediately I imagine learning fire and air, which are very fast-response and shifty elements, and then learning water and being impatient, and having to learn to flow with the element more, which helps with Earth later. - See more of the group. Not sure if his trainers travelled with him, but it would have been cool to see him have his own "team avatar". Since it feels more like he just visited them for training then left. Which might have been the case, actually. There probably could have been more material to relate to Aang's side. Since it kinda felt like relating it to Aang wasn't fully fleshed out, and it was mostly about Sozin/Roku's backstory and the big reveal about Zuko. But this is easily one of my all-time favorite episodes. The story of friends becoming enemies, seeing more Fire Nation history, and getting that amazing sucker punch at the end. And hearing Iroh speak again. Awesome stuff.

Jonathanese

yea, a lot of ppl i've seen react don't understand that nuance. They think he came from the start to make sure Roku died. But that would contradict the message of the episode.

Ietseatapples

Best standalone episode of the entire series. Seeing yall recognize that Sozin came to help but once he saw roku get hit with the poison gas, changing his mindset about what he felt was possible was great. He came to help his old friend but when the opportunity showed itself, he couldn't help but take it for his vision

Maxxman

Very acutely noticed my dear Watson ! More seriously thank you for the correction, I edited my comment accordingly.

Mathπ

Zoku? Did you mean Roku? xD

N_JR

This episode could honestly be turned into a movie. There is so much there and the story so great. They were able to pack so much into such a short episode

Dylan Holman

It's just to avoid confusion. lol. But yeah I feel like they got it more than most reactors. I LOVE when people see the big reveal. And I'm glad they didn't quite figure it out until Iroh said it.

Jonathanese

His actual phrasing was "you have more than one great grandfather" then he proceeded to list 2 of them. But yeah.

Emi Wan

Just to clarify, Sozin -> Azulon -> Ozai -> Azula & Zuko

Christopher

Agreed! Aang and Zuko’s destinies and the way that they are intertwined is the most significant part of this episode which they understood

Mark G

Dont let the comments about the great grandfathers get you down, you both still understood the point of the episode. 💖💖💖

Chocobo

Hope they get the family tree lol

Alan Thompson

One interesting thing that I notice a lot reactors and some people miss is how Iroh tells Zuko that it's up to him to restore balance to the world, when normally that responsibility belongs to the avatar. All through the show, we keep hearing about how Aang has to restore balance to the world, but for the first time we see the responsibility be given to Zuko. It's a powerful scene that strongly encapsulates the intertwined fates of the Avatar and the Firelord.

Jenny Tolls

Also another thing to note. The Avatar is usually announced on their 16th birthday that is why they came to see Roku on his birthday. But in Aang’s case going back to previous episodes they informed him early due to the war

Destinee Yang

What might’ve confused them with the great grandparent/grandparent thing was Iroh said that Zuko has two great grandfathers - but technically you would have four great grandfathers (two on your mums side and two on your dads side), and two grandfathers. Obviously Zuko’s other two great grandfathers aren’t important to the plot, but that would have been my line of thinking too on a first watch.

Franky E

A voice actor changing will always be sort of jarring when you first hear it, but I almost prefer that the new actor, Greg Baldwin, didn't try to completely replicate Mako's voice for Iroh. It distinctly separates the two and makes Makos performance as Iroh almost a memorial for him (him singing Leaves from the vine will always make me tear up!)

izzy

If you ever wondered how Iroh got the artifact.. Remember Iroh was in-line and was the crown prince back then.

Jason Serrano

Something to note Zuko obviously isn’t a father but the “4 fathers” line essentially means 4 generations

Destinee Yang

spartan 100% certain sozin is ozais father lmao Sozin -> Azulon -> Ozai -> Zuko -> me

Steven

Just got done watching your reactions. You are missing 1 of the 4 fathers which is Firelord Azulon who is Iroh and Ozai’s father. Who Azula is named after. So to break it down we have Sozin, Azulon, Iroh and Ozai, and Zuko and Azula. Firelord Azulon is the one who you’ve seen in flashbacks where Zuko and Azula firebended for him and he passed away over night

Destinee Yang

Also it’s thought that Iroh used the secret flame-triggered ink because he figured Zuko would get frustrated and burn it, as he did 😂

Daniel

Not gonna lie, y’all confusing Sozin as Azulon the whole time kinda irked me.. Wouldn’t expect that from Spartan especially lol but all good. This is my personal favorite episode of the series. It’s amazing how the writers can compact such an incredible story with the perfect twist that nobody would’ve thought of, in a 25min episode. They could’ve easily made this a 2-Parter and extend the storylines here and it still wouldn’t miss a beat. Also surprised you guys didn’t notice after I pointed it out the first time, in the Iroh/Zuko jail scene, they’re still portraying Zuko as the one behind bars to an even more extreme extent, while portraying Iroh under a beam of light, and Zuko in the dark. But in the end he’s not, as Iroh has now showed him the light. That whole scene was done so perfectly and Greg Baldwin knocked it out of the park imo. He would’ve made Mako proud. Just wish we got more of this episode, that’s literally the only 'negative' thing about it.

Daniel

Thank you for releasing so soon! We’ve been spoiled this week. This episode is one of my favorites because of the lore & the twist at the end! AHHH SO GOOD!

Destinee Yang

Love that you guys commented on why monk Gyatso was so close to Aang because he is reincarnation of Roku. Soo many people miss that part.

Saibal Sarkar

"Some friendships are so strong, they can even transcend lifetimes" - manly tears every time

Tobi

Spartan be careful, they said several times in the episode that Sozin was not Zuko's grandfather, but Zuko's 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭-𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. Sozin is Zuko's father's grandfather. Roku is Zuko's mother's grandfather. Zuko's grandfather is Azulon (Azula was named after him). Azulon is the one we saw in a flash-back in season 2 (Zuko Alone iirc), and the one who died suspiciously.

Mathπ

the guy who voiced iroh now was a protégé of Mako, so i think he was the best voice actor we were ever gonna get to replace him.

Peyton R

The old dude that you saw in a previous flashback episode who was killed/usurped wasn't Sozin, that was Azulon. Azulon is the son of Sozin, and the father of Ozai/Iroh. Sozin is Ozai's/Iroh's grandfather, and Zuko's great grandfather.

Mike Wysocki

Yesss!! I’ve been waiting for this!

Jenny Tolls

One of my favourite episodes

Adrian Neagoe

Roku and Sozin were Zukos great grandfathers not his grandfathers

Oron Bar

Those are Zuko’s Great Grandparents so his parent’s grandparents
