Game of Thrones 5x4 Reaction & Review

Comments

I had very similar reactions to the show as both of you guys lol. Wild

Betty Alice

agreed

Julie

Just to add to the takes here as a person who watched all of the show without knowing stuff from the books. I didn't know until recently that Barristan was even still alive in the books. People talk about it but to some one watching through the first time I felt it was realistic for him to fall here and honestly it showed how dangerous the sons of Harpy really were. Anyone else wouldn't have even killed all the people he did before he fell. So I understand book readers gripes, but going on about it, when they said themselves are going to read the books and know nothing else about it seems like you're trying to ruin their experience of the show as it is.

Julie

this right here IMO was the first sign of the writers making mistakes of all the deaths this show has Barristans was the dumbest, the amount of stories and significance he could have as a character and they just killed him off to show they could

Derek Fisher

Row on, Gendry! Keep those arm muscles strong!

Don’tDrinkTheLuminol

Not a mod but no, we don't talk about that. We don't set expectations of any kind.

Julien

yeah I think I heard her figure something out and I was like yes but no, a lot of stuff in between 😂

Juan

Mod, Season 5 is great but you can see the bad seeds being planted that lead to the series downfall. Can I talk about that or should I wait.

Juan

the official meme is that as far as we know, "Gendry is still rowing"

Rainbow

I think melissandra’s ability to seduce men is a factor of her magic abilities with her body being the tool. It’s not plainly physical/sexual seduction, she mystifies/bewitches them so Jon’s ability to resist when no one else could means that much more :)

Gummybear

Final comments on the Dany situation as a JON STAN: The boy may have made a misguided “mistake” but he self-admittedly murdered someone and publicly displayed the body to incite violence in an already extremely fragile political situation by writing “kill the masters”. This was an extremely poignant and bold act in the context of what was happening in the city, you can’t just view it in isolation. Showing mercy could have had devastating cascading consequences. Dany had previously been biased towards the slaves and was criticized for it and violence grew. She had to make a statement that no one was above the law, even those who followed her. how could she expect to uphold the law if she can’t enforce it? She was trying to rule objectively by ENFORCING the law rather than BEING the law (aka ruling from personal instinct). It is obvious that she was emotionally struggling with the decision and if she would’ve decided based on personal desire she likely would have chose differently. She had to avoid placating to either side, deter future disobedience, and stay to true to her word/the law. To ignore all of these factors in favour of a perpetrator’s sympathetic motivations is not good leadership… you can argue the decision ultimately may not have been POLITICALLY sound but it was FAIR in the eyes of the law. intent/backstory is not relevant to the law. Also, everyone is a product of their environment so you can’t afford that leeway to the boy and not to dany. Her whole life she was mistreated by Viserys and on the run from Robert & Varys’ spies/assassins, then was sold and abused by another man from a very violent culture which she had to assimilate to in order to survive, she has no family and has lost or been betrayed by everyone she has ever cared for, and yet dany has always led foremost with compassion for others. She is on a journey of learning to wield her power as someone who has only ever known powerlessness and cruelty most of her life..

Gummybear

Around 4 mins in - Spartan... Would you be happy to be associated or friends with slavers? I dont think thats a great idea dude lmaooo

Nana-Afia

Should've done it in the pyramids and be done with it - hizdar zo lorac

Jamie being mad at Tyrion all ties back to the first episode of this season where he is talking to Cersei about everyone is going to come after them. No one seriously messed with them openly when Tywin was alive, but he’s not there to intimidate people now, so the sharks are circling them (so to speak). Jamie loved Tyrion and hated that he was being blamed for a crime he didn’t commit, so he was happy to free his brother; but now that Tywin is gone, suddenly Jamie’s children are being threatened. Jamie’s protective father instincts are kicking in late but hard. As much as the twins seemed to dislike their father (remember Cersei’s last conversation with her father was basically, I’m not going to marry Loras, I’ve been screwing Jamie since forever, and also fuck you, Dad, for trying to control me), they grew up in the privileged position of his protection and they took it for granted. That said, overall Cersei absolutely brings out the worst in Jamie, and she’s an expert at it—she’s been doing it their entire lives.

Don’tDrinkTheLuminol

I mean why wouldn’t Jamie be mad at Tyrion. He literally killed his father. Also this has nothing to do with Cersei manipulating him or anything like that.

Rey Jr

To the mods: I do hope you let them watch the 5x09 scene about the Dance of Dragons that may potentially be considered a spoiler for HotD. Most of what is discussed in that scene isn't really a spoiler once you've watched the S1 of HotD, and that scene is pivotal to the character arcs in GoT.

Aditya

Where does George say this regarding Bronn? Not disagreeing I am just curious as I have not seen/read this before.

SuddenImpulse

I agree that Jaime definitely felt a sense of betrayal there. You have to put yourself in Jaime's shoes when evaluating his feelings on Tyrion

SuddenImpulse

Part of the reason dealing with the Faith-Militant is tricky for Tommen, outside him being young, soft and inexperienced, is because the representatives of the Faith of the Seven often do a lot of charitable work within the cities (like the High Sparrow helping the poor when Cersei meets him first time) and they also are..well..the face of the religion much of the smallfolk hold to. If they are not careful, an attack on the faith-militant can be seen as an attack on the faith itself to some, and can result in a potential religion-fueled uprising of smallfolk, which can get very bloody and out of hand very quickly. The Sept of Baelor, for all intents and purposes is basically the Vatican, and the High Sparrow/High Septon the Pope. Having the kingsguard kill/barge through members on the steps and barge into the Sept of Baelor is not going to come off well to many people. It's a fine line that has to be walked. These facts are also why Cersei is grinning ear to ear at using them as a tool. She is a degree of separation from their actions (like arresting Loras) even though she basically made it happen, and there is a lot more complexity and maneuvering required to oppose the faith-militant for the Tyrells for example.

SuddenImpulse

Barristan the badass. Guys btw he is not anymore one of the best fighters. Once a fan asked randomly who would win between bronn and old barristan and Martin said Bronn would defeat him in seconds. In the books Barristan does defeat a good dothraki fighter but he suffers many strikes on his armor while the dothraki is naked fighting. But yeah barristan is still very good in his late 60s, I think he would still beat an average fighter 50 years younger like robb. But young Barristan yes, he is abstolutely legendary, he would 2-hands Jaime, Loras (in the series they dont say much but Loras is very very good), and yes, he would defeat Bronn taking while taking a piss.

Krefulin

imo this is the dividing episode, this is where the split between book story and show story start down their own roads.

Phil H

While obviously Jaime loves Tyrion, Jaime also loved his father. So if course he'll be mad that Tyrion killed Tywin. Jaime risked a lot to free Tyrion, and Tyrion repays him like that, Jaime probably feels a little betrayed. Couple that with the fact that without Tywin, the Lannisters lose a lot of power, so Jaime is probably mad at that to. Also, Cerseis move with the faith, is that they can harm the Tyrells, which is what she wants, but technically she keeps her hands clean cause she didn't do anything to the Tyrells.

Marcell

Great reaction like always guys! Just wanted to say I’m enjoying all the discussions in the comments, even when everyone disagrees lol. It’s all in good fun and it’s good to remember that the tone of comments on a screen can be easily misinterpreted. We’re all friends here! Anyway, as you get closer to the end, the show doesn’t get any less crazy, so cheers to many more fun reactions!

Brit’sBiscuits

"there's no way Sir Barristan falls like that" well well well... here's to the first of many.

Sasha

Given we saw a snake and the sand snakes in this episode. Do you have any snake stories? Do you live in an area of Australia that has a large reptile presence like we do in Florida

JAKECharlesCRK

Loved the reaction again.

Dname

Yes, exactly I noticed the misunderstanding too.

Dname

all I have to say is strap on your seatbelt it’s gonna get wild😁, also loved your thoughts on these episodes

Cece

Tywin said Cersei always thought she was smarter than she actually was. Remember that.

Rachel Taylor

Even the greatest swordsman wouldn't win 1vs 8 and they have weapons. Outside of magic the show tries to be realistic when it comes to combat.

Robert L

I love how much you guys are loving Jon Snow. He is the heart of the show and I like how you guys constantly notice the parallels of him and Dany on their respective journeys.

Nicole Herd

I always had love/hate emotions regarding the end fight scene. It's cool we finally get to see Barristan Selmy let loose and It's realistic so I can't complain, no one is winning a 1v8. But it feels anti climactic almost to have him lose to these untrained/underequipped street rats lol. Thank f*** Greyworm clutched it.

Roma

I disagree, I think Tywin DID know that Tyrion was most like him, which was why he hated him so much, Tywin almost considered it a cosmic joke on him to have a (in his opinion) disfigured son that had a mind that rivaled his own...

Sarah

Yep, Baristan is a legendary fighter, even at this age he should not even get a cut from those amateurs.

Milorad

Gendry is still rowing in his boat LOL

Ghostcat

People always say Cersie loves her children which is true but the thing she loves more than her children is power and she will do anything even hurt and betray her kids to keep it. She thinks she's the smartest person alive and she believes she's clever just like Tywin but her whole life is about making stupid decisions. She's not very bright. Tyrion is most like Tywin. Too bad Tywin never realized that

Kyle Thompson

I think Jamie’s feelings towards Tyrion is the simple fact that he murdered his father , and not some Cersei manipulation .

Zeek

I agree, Dany beheading the guy was an L move

Franky E

Pudgey winterfell is not only restored but also the Bolton Sigil on it. You missed it

IBRAHIM ALJABOR

I've said this before and I say it again. Pudgey is a witch! This girl should really work for a weather channel Im telling you she predicts stuff years b4 they happen. Not going to say anything more about it to avoid narrowing it down way too much but I have made note of the timestamp in this episode to refer back to it when it happens. Fun stuff as always guys, thank you! :)

neutchain

I understand what you meant with the Dany situation. The guy she killed went through a shit life. But there are many more slaves that went through the same shit. If she lets that slide there will be many more cases, in which they do such thing. Should she just let it slide everytime because they went through a shitty life ? In order to create a new thing you need to make tough decisions. That’s what Dany made

Rey Jr

They really made perfect theme music for her character too. It really emphasizes that eerie nature.

SuddenImpulse

I’m glad you picked up the two different takes on Dany’s oldest brother - like the Lore series has showcased, point of view is always important in this story.

S.

I think Spartan nailed the Khaleesi topic, agree 1000%!! Great work you two!!!

faika hammoud

Agreed. The discourse on Rhaegar from both characters and the viewers/readers, is one of my favourite aspects of the series. Plus, the fact that he's constantly mentioned even though he hasn't been shown made me so curious who he was at this point in the show.

Angel M

Cersei casually using religious fanatics to try and get to the Tyrells through Loras because he's gay perfectly embodies her permanent hypocrisy, being guilty of incest and being unfaithful to Robert herself... As I've said before, Melisandre really is among my favorite characters in GoT. Of course as far as we've seen she's been doing almost exclusively shady and evil stuff, but I cannot help but adore her presence, her charisma, her power on screen. That "you know nothing John Snow" was breath-taking. Overall I think I love the air of mystery around her.

Mathπ

Anyone in the religious order of the Lord of Light/R'hllor is called a Red Priest/Preistess. Just like how with the Faith of the Seven you have Septons/Septas. If you remember from the History and Lore video, Thoros of Myr is a Red Priest (just...not a very good one because he is a drunk and had lost his faith in it for a long time). Melisandre is a red priestess. The woman in Volantis is a red priestess.

SuddenImpulse

The famous Jonathan Pryce really does a fantastic job in that role.

SuddenImpulse

Love Ser Barristan Selmy, 2nd best swordsman in Westorosi history, Ian McElhinney is perfect casting, he nails the role

Christopher

I liked how you are spotting that there are lots of different takes on legendary people like Rheagar.

cstarklady

Ah the High Sparrow has come to power. What a character.

Nick Wright

Just wanna say that I think the showrunners did Barristan dirty.

Jalabarxho

Very true. The situations are quite different.

SuddenImpulse

Bronn really is an underrated fighter though. Loved the reaction and your thoughts on the episode. Can’t wait for the next!

Joseph Campbell

Yes unless they are back lore explaining his past

Jenny Tolls

Mods are Barristan book spoilers off limits?

Tyson Wilson

Fwiw, Jon is in charge of like 100 people. Dany is trying to rule twp groups, hundreds of thousands of people that are openly hostile to each other. She's in over her head.

J_Fley .

Little Finger only cares about himself and him saying all of these things to Sansa are just manipulation and basically, part of his bigger schemes, remember during the earlier season he said, "Chaos is a Ladder", he just wants to create chaos and climb up!

Blackfyre

That would be a sight to see. They really picked an excellent actor for this role in this time period, that having been said.

SuddenImpulse

Trust me, Spartan & Pudgey aren't those kind of people. They will continue to air their opinions regardless of what people think, and they think it is extremely important to be unfiltered, authentic and genuine in their commentary. As mods our job is to try and make sure they are aware of all the relevant information, have accurate information, and are aware of all the context, but beyond that it is up to them to craft their own opinions. So if that is what you are looking for, you came to the right place! At the same time, they also think its important that others are free to vocalize their own opinions, whether they agree with S&P or not, and they do realize that sometimes there will be disagreements like this as a result. All these things are one of the reasons they are my favorite reactions and part of why I wanted to mod for them.

Barristan the Bold, I pray for a spin-off prequel show about his time before Game of Thrones when he was in his prime.

Jonoridge

As much as I love Danny and disagree with many of your opinions about her, I'd hate to get to a point where the mass pressure on you alters your honest opinions and makes you leave some stuff unsaid or try to please viewers by giving us what we wanna hear. I prefer hearing the truth and debate 24/7 and still enjoy the authentic reactions and opinions you give us.

Chur I was legit catching up on your s5 vids and having a couple beers then this just popped up thanks s&p
