you've seen The guru's ability to find the Avatar by reading Appa's energy before....Remember The Swamp episode? the swamp bender Hue taught that everything is "connected" and then Aang was able to use that same technique to locate Appa and Momo when the other swamp benders were hunting them to eat...

"That's how much respect they put on Appa's name" lmaoo yasssssss

Unique

That would be surprising and disappointing especially because there are moderators like you that work so hard to weed that out

this episode shows definitively that pudgey does not in fact read the comments on patreon

It's one of my favorites.

Besides the well-deserved humane society award other comments have mentioned. When Aang chose Appa, he gave him an apple. That's literally what "Appa" means, and I think that Appa is named "Apple" is incredible adorable. Notice they used "shirshu spit darts". It took me a while to catch that. The shirshu is what June rides around on that jabs its tongue at things and paralyses them. So they have darts with shirshu spit. The "Hog Porcupine" is a "Boarcupine" and I just love their names for animals. Like the "Rabbaroos" in the last episode. Since each season is an element, then each season we get to really see what life is like within that element, and how each of the characters relates to this element. There's some good character study you can do for each one's relationship. At the circus, you get the kid who resembles Aang. A bit of a glimpse into the similarities between air and fire that we don't really get to see much of. The older I get, the more I really appreciate that Appa got to have his own episode. As a kid, you think of it like "you have the characters, and then the animals that just come along." But this show (when it came out) was what really got me to think of them as full characters of their own. It might sound silly. But I didn't grow up with pets. I had very little experience in the magic of human-animal relationships.

I try to avoid thinking of this episode. It's a deep cut that just keeps salting the wound over and over. Even the scene of Appa growling at Guru hurts because normally Appa is curious and friendly, and here is this nice person and all Appa can respond with is defensiveness. It's just as the Ringleader says in the beginning of the episode. Here we saw Appa get broken.

I cannot handle this episode

I've watched this series in its entirety about 20 times since it originally aired. This is my favorite show of all time, and I know everything about this IP. This episode along with Iroh's tale in the previous episode still bring me to tears every single time. I'm so glad I found your channel during HotD because I love seeing experience this show for the first time. Keep up the great reactions you two!

Mako is also the iconic voice behind Aku from Samurai Jack and the narrator in Dexter's Laboratory.

On March 27, 2007, this episode received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the United States in the category "Outstanding Children's Programming", which the HSUS Genesis Award press release described as "[...] a mythical tale about animals held captive for human entertainment that resonates with the way animals are used in circuses today".

Yeah, the sandbenders who said "he's probably already in ba sing se by now" sold him to the merchants who later changed their mind and sold him to the fire nation. So there's no plot hole, but it's probably a little bit of a retcon. They just found a clever way to cover it up.

The "In Honor of Mako" message in Tales of Ba Sing Se was edited in later in production. Mako Iwamatsu passed away after he had already recorded all his voice lines for season 2. Mako's last ever voice credits are for 2x20.

The circus wasn't in Ba Sing Se, it was before Appa arrived there. The beetle-headed merchants originally intended to sell him in Ba Sing Se, but after they realized they couldn't control him, they quickly sold him to the Fire Nation circus (the same one Ty Lee was a member of before joining Azula) that was visiting a Fire Nation colony in the Earth Kingdom closer to the Si Wong desert.
