Men with dead wives are WIDOWERS. Women with dead husbands are WIDOWS.

Martin Robertson

Why? Because a kid's cartoon can't have sad moments or realistic lessons? That's stupid and dismissive of the work they put into the show. Ironically, you need to grow up.

While I personally don't consider the episode filler, I have to agree that a lot of the stories were kind of boring to me. I think maybe I would have enjoyed the overall episode more if I had watched this when I was a kid, but I watched this at 25 and I felt like them that most of the stories were not very interesting to me. I certainly can see how people have different opinions on the episode though, and I think they are all valid.

I mean besides the Iroh scene, you guys kind of reacted to this like it was a filler episode. Can’t blame you though, it technically is and a lot of reactors had an initial reaction like this as well. But what makes AtLA so great is that even a filler episode that literally has no ties to the plot of the show (besides momo’s tale) can have such an emotional impact and a profound sense of meaning for each of the characters showcased. That’s a testament to how great the writing is in this show and how detailed they were. Brilliant episode and a personal top 5 for me. RIP Mako! He was an incredible voice actor and brought the best out of Dante Basco as well.

Y'all should Google an Avatar world map and see how big Ba Sing Se is.

Guys y’all should really do a Q&A about GoT, answer question, and react to other tidbits of the show, like An Honest Trailer Volume 1, Coldplay x GoT the musical, maybe some bloopers or behind the scenes as well

Joana

I think they would LOVE it, but Spartan has only seen bits and pieces of SW which he doesn't remember too well and Pudgey has seen no SW.

SuddenImpulse

you guys should react to mandalorian

Locke

Widower is the male appropriate term

Wow I’ve cried tho this episode everytime I’ve watched such a sad moment

I remember the first time watching this episode already an adult and Iroh's tale putting me in tears, it was the moment I realized this show was so much more than just a "kid's cartoon"

I'll split the Zuko part into another post, but this is technically a continuation. The depiction of Zuko and his reluctance to let someone in, ESPECIALLY from the Earth Kingdom, is pretty impressive. I'm picturing what is going through his head. Imagine you are among refugees in a war caused by your nation. Imagine you have to hide this very fact. Now imagine one of them likes you, and says "you seem like a good person." You just immediately refuse to accept that compliment, even if it's true. It feels like you've convinced her to believe in a lie about you. That you're an imposter who accidentally tricked her and need to come clean. This hits hard for me, because I had some bad things happen and went through some very hard times about a decade ago, and in my dispair and frustration, turned to what later became parts of the "toxic manosphere." I was able to pull myself out pretty quickly and mostly heal. But now I'm dating a girl who has had to deal with some guys who are in similar groups. She has told me regularly "Don't worry. I feel safe with you. You're a good guy." And I feel like I need to tell her immediately that she's wrong. That I WAS one of those guys. Even if I didn't actually put any of it into practice, I thought like they did. Had the same bitterness and resentment. I feel like I accidentally tricked her into thinking I'm a better person than I am, and I feel I need to shout "no, I'm an asshole" so that I don't feel like I'm lying to her.

One thing to keep in mind with regard's to Iroh's past (and this is currently being explored in another show), when raised in the culture that is being imperialistic, many people participate enthusiastically under the belief that they are trying to do good. More unsettling is that a lot of horrible things have been done by people who are trying to "enthusiastically do good" and therefore their opposition "must the be ones who are wrong." I don't think there's a major regime in history who actually thought they were the bad guys. And when you're on the inside, you don't see anything to counter this belief. Also while less so in in the case of a general, what is ultimately a terrible regime on the outside will look like a relatively normal life on the inside, with some corners cut here, or some other things there that you are told "not to worry about" there. I'm not saying this to try to make excuses. I know Iroh wouldn't make excuses. I'm saying this because I'm an American and we've had a lot of wrestling to do with similar things over the years. Most in the military joined because they wanted to defend their country and those they love, or perhaps help some part of the world, or often because that was their ticket into college. Not many of them were thinking "let's go secure some oil" or "let's go replace this leader with one approved by the country that attacked us." This felt especially strong a few years back when I was receiving some lucrative offers with military contractors. One would have been designing cruise missile avionics. At first, I created some mental gymnastics to justify accepting the offers. "A poorly designed system would kill more civilians. So maybe I'm helping civilians." But honestly I thought back on this show, and didn't take the job, feeling like these sorts of small rationalizations are what add up to the big things. So I didn't take the jobs and now I work on thermostats and smart homes. But honestly I can't hold much judgement towards those who do.

so they changed irohs voice actor?

For Sokka’s it’s a haiku battle, Japanese poetry in the form of 5 syllables in the first line 7 in the second and 5 in the third

matt

Mako is the OG voice actor for Iroh who unfortunately passed away. This was his last recorded episode. When the new actor is asked by fans to sing leaves from the vine, he refuses as he states “it’s Makos song”

matt

Mako, the voice of Iroh passed away. This was his last episode he voiced. He voiced it from his death bed :( leaves in the vine always make me cry

Eddie House

Everyone’s a gangsta until “Leaves from the vine” starts playing. Mako is the original voice actor for Iroh

Hope you guys enjoyed the episode as much as the fans do! I love it just as much, but I have seen some reactors have it too hyped up and expect a plot heavy episode. Instead we get an slice-of-life anthology of goofy and emotional character moments. It's interesting that Aang's tale is centered around animals, probably because he is looking for and thinking about Appa. Also in Sokka's tale, I think there's another reason he likes the first haiku he overhears: "Through all the long night Winter moon glows with bright love Sleet, her silver tears." Nothing can compare to Iroh's story though... 🫖

This episode is often considered the best in the whole show. It basically compiles everything that's great about the show, AND offers a change in paradigm in the storytelling : We got character development for basically everyone, humour, even some action with Aang, and unexpected gut-punches and emotional moments. The tales of Iroh and Momo always hit hard, even on rewatches.

Mathπ

After watching Iroh’s a million times, I figured out that the way he helps a toddler boy then teenage boys then an adult is symbolic of him helping his son throughout all the stages of his life. When we thought we couldn’t love Iroh any more than we already did!!!! 😭❤️

The title card “In Honor of Mako” was a tribute to the voice actor for Iroh, Japanese-American actor Mako, who passed away from cancer not long before this episode aired.
