🎯 best part is it got better with age like wine, I remember reminiscing about this show with random kids on my football team in high school 10+ years after it finished…it’s a top 5 Nickelodeon show competing with the greats like SpongeBob and Rugrats…

It’s so fun watching how much you guys really appreciate the amazingness of this series that I love! I always like to point out how the writers create these deeply compelling and intricate stories in 20ish minute episodes!!! Crazyyyy!

Yes her echolocation and learning how to bend with the blindness really gives her a special edge.

Correct, and this is the wall that Iroh broke through and told Toph about (off-screen). That’s why he didn’t completely break into the city like he says in 2x11

Daniel

If you look at the structure of Ba-Sing-Se on the map during the intro, you can see it’s actually made up of 3 great Walls, so while the drill did break through, it was only through the outermost part of “The Walls”

I’ve always understood Toph to be the top earth bender because she is so attuned to the earth it’s just on another level compared to everyone else. I think Boomy in his prime would be able to go toe to toe with her too. But other than that she’s on another LEVEL. She only gets cooler too that’s all I’ll say.

Incorrect. The reason Azula wins is because she gives no fucks, and is always gunning for the kill. If Aang comes in with that mentality and approach, which he never does, it would be a much different story.

Daniel

Aang vs Azula is a great matchup but Azula wins 9/10 times. Aang held his own for 2 minutes with the advantage of being able to bend 3 elements and still basically lost if it wasn’t for the sludge. Azula is always fighting handicapped in this show and still either wins or comes out unscathed, she rarely gets to fight a true 1v1.

Another thing about the Aang and Azula fight that makes it more suspenseful is remembering episode 1x19, where Zuko was telling Aang in the cave that he is just like his sister, a natural prodigy. Seeing two prodigies like that then come into a fight is so cool, all the while makes me like Zuko more because of how hard he has to work and fight for everything.

I think it's just that since Aang is the Avatar and the protagonist, we've come to expect great things from him. And people are used to some sort of "things always end on the hero's side". So we tend to gloss over what are ultimately very impressive things, because we've come to expect them from stories. You could call it "The protagonist handicap". It's harder to impress people when you feel like the plot is working for them. Similarly, we more or less know where his moral compass points him. Zuko's compass is spinning around frantically, forcing the audience to the edge of their seats waiting to see where it will land. It isn't necessarily about the better or stronger person, but the tension. But yes Aang is an absolute beast as an Avatar, with the purest heart in the show as well. He is, like, the Kyoshi of air. I feel like people forget that when they see his child-like attitude. But childLIKE isn't childISH. And Aang is anything BUT childish. Though back on the first paragraph about prodigy heroes. I tend to discuss this a lot, but this is why writing Azula as.. 1. A woman 2. A villain 3. A prodigy ...is so fantastic. If you're going to show a powerful woman, it's one thing for her to be a powerful "good" woman. But you EXPECT her to win because of plot armor and moral stance. And she is also doing so with everyone's support. In a sense, it's the "Easy" decision. It does little to change the expectation of women to be "pure" and "people-pleasers". But it's another thing entirely to have the woman be a prodigy villain. By choosing against what is commonly good, she is forging her own path, DESPITE the people around her. By being a prodigy, plot armor is no longer a sufficient excuse to overlook her power. You are forced to confront it. You are now on the OTHER side of the plot armor. Her power isn't "blink and you miss it" or some one off "girl power" moment. It is instead the constant uphill battle we have to see the the heroes climb over and over again. It's unavoidable and unrelenting. It's not something you have to observer or pick out. It's visceral. In the gut. That spine-tingling sensation when her signature chime rings. Azula is always my #1 pick the moment people talk about how to write powerful women. Sorry I ended up repeating that rant.....

I firmly believe the specifics of the Avatars' personalities are built around what is needed at the time. Won't expand too much. But my main point being that Avatars spend lifetimes learning the elements. Aang has less than a year. So he was born a prodigy.

Jonathanese

Aang too is a true prodigy in his specific element. On par with, if not more so, than Azula as a fire bender. He's the youngest air bending master in Air Nomad history. His speed, velocity, and creativeness was and still is unmatched. This is not because he's the Avatar, it's Aang's own natural ability. Glad to see Azula was able to witness it firsthand lol. Another great episode and reaction from you two. Enjoy your break!

Daniel

This is true but what makes Azula more impressive is that she is not the avatar unlike Aang.

Jenny Tolls

Yas Aang is a good match for Azula since he is a prodigy too😊 remember the episode of season 1x12 when on Aangs flashbacks he is around all the airbenders on his age and he is the only one with arrows and tattoos around his body the thing is Aang is a master and he invented few airbenders techniques (the airball on this episode for example) among the monks he was knew not only as the avatar but as a true prodigy since with only 12 y.o he mastered around 54 techniques! This is not a spoiler since they wont say it explicit on the episodes but is something that lots of people miss when is their first time watching it! Pd: sorry for my english, im fron Argentina Ill improve soon since Im currently living in Australia 😊
