Game of Thrones 4x8 Reaction & Review

Comments

Nah I disagree, I think Prince Oberyn was simply waiting for an answer from the mountain to confirm whether or not it was Tywin who gave the order to the mountain to rape and murder Elia Martell.

Jose

Welcome to the club of more crushed dreams! Poor Oberyn, he was just that bit too cocky and let his anger take his eyes off the ball. I read this first and definitely think it’s more visceral on screen. I kept thinking, well they won’t actually do it that violently on screen right? And then they did. So long Pedro Pascal. Always one of the best characters of the show.

Victoria E (vickster5001)

Spartan needs to realize that Pudgey is just always right lolol

Jenny Tolls

Ty for the Last of us spoiler warning =)

Rainbow

Now we can say, he was probably the best living fighter at that time - Oberyn. Jamie (with hand) and Loras, the Hound, Brienne were all also up there, but Oberyn was prob the best. King Robert was great back in the day. Barristan was prob better than most of the above in his prime. The best in recent history was Sir Arthur Dayne (who fought in Robert's rebellion).

Rainbow

I think Dany was more than justified in her decision to send Jorah away. He started off as a spy that almost cost her her life, and while we as an audience know that he's changed, she doesn't. I think it would have been an entirely different scenario if he had been honest and upfront about what he had been doing as soon as he decided to support her. But instead he waited for *years* and then didn't even tell her by choice, only because he was forced too. Any other character in this show would have executed him. I agree with Nana-Afia that Spartan seems to praise men for their actions but then condemns Dany for similar choices.

Kayla

This. Jorah committed treason, he should be put to death, but dany exiles him, I assune because of their relationship. You can really see how hurt she is that she even has to do so

Nana-Afia

Yea, real lack of empathy towards danys situation. Jorahs betrayal is a really big deal. we see him realign, but he didn't communicate this with dany and so the whole basis of their relationship and trust is built on lies - lies that almost cost dany her life

Nana-Afia

I know it’s hard to watch Dany dismiss Jorah but it’s important to remember we as viewers know he had betrayed her from the start and we see as he becomes loyal and devoted. To Dany it’s her closest companion who has been with her through all her greatest losses and wins, to come and find out he was betraying her in the beginning when she had no reason to suspect him, it’s devastating for her. Just perspective! As for Oberyn lots of people call it arrogance I see the love of a brother trying to get the murderer of his sister after all this time. Of course he would drag it out and make him suffer, especially with how horrific the death was. Lastly, love how the mention of Ned still makes you two smile

Julie

can't view this show with any convention to any story you have read or watched before!

Stannis loves grammar.

before your journey is over you must learn! love is the death of duty!keep your chin up! T

Stannis loves grammar.

Both of you are right. she's laughing at the situation and at the Hound's misery

TallTyrionLannister

Nah, it cuz whenever they reach their destination, the people they come to see is dead. And shes just losing it and just start laughing her lungs out.

BølleTM

Bronn called it, one mistake and it’s all over. This episode also gives us what Tyrion promised to Cersei - there will come a day when your joy turns to ashes in your mouth.

Bibity bop

I think Aria was laughing at the hound because there’s no ransom for him to get now, he came all that way for nothing.

JC

Tyrion also falls within that. He has insulted and humiliated Joffrey and his entourage for years. Justified or not, his own words came back to bite him at his trial. When you publicly threaten someone and his entourage and that person ends up dead, people will remember your threats. It's the most normal thing in the world.

Julien

I’ll say if you like the acting from Jacob Anderson who plays grey worm, I highly suggest his new series interview with a vampire based on the Anne rice novels. Very good show

Jamo

With Sansa, remember that she had been learning from Cersei. "A woman's best weapon is between her legs." And what Tyrion said about Cersei "Making honest feelings do dishonest work is one of her many gifts." Look at what Sansa did this episode. Also I recommend if you want to read the books I recommend the audiobooks. They are great.

Karli Mac

The death of Prince Oberyn in the books was easily one of the hardest things for me. He's such a great character and your hopes get built up so much, and then...well. You know.

John Neiberger

They’re not “wasted character arcs” they’re examples of how hubris, pride, arrogance, and the such are the downfall of many great people. Robb Stark not heeding his men’s wishes and thought and running off with his pretty girl after already vowing to marry another. Here we see how Oberyn’s pride and lust for vengeance paved the way to his death. Killing the mountain wasn’t good enough for him he wanted him to name Tywin, he wanted a confession, he wanted vengeance, not justice. He died because of it. The whole point of Game of Thrones is to subvert the common tropes, so the “righteous warrior defeating the mountain in the name of combat” doesn’t apply here. He’s a man with faults and it led to his downfall, just like in the real world. There are consequences to your actions or in this case your inactions as if Oberyn had walked around and stabbed him in the throat while helpless he would’ve lived.

matt

Good writing and good acting will do that.

SuddenImpulse

The thing is, Dany usually kills traitors. She let Jorah leave. Granted, still sucks, but he’s not dead. That was her being merciful.

Brittany Proffitt

I'd remove everything about what Oberyn does with his weapons, as someone who didn't read the books first it surprised me in later episodes.

Hayden King

Even though Oberyn was only in the show for part of a season, he’s still one of the best characters in the entire show I think. It was really sad to see him go I remember how shocked I was. Enjoyed seeing your thoughts on it and I can’t wait for the next episode!

Joseph Campbell

Lmaoo lush fantasies of seeing Cersei speared between the eyes give me life

Julien

I don't get the frustration of great characters dying in this series. If they wern't good characters hwo could you be invensted? How could you be feel the tension and have a great experince? Why would you watch it otherwise?

Abby

Omg stop saying this people, lest they slow down for giving us too much! Lol

Julien

Meereen is actually really far from Braavos. You guys can look at the map, it's not a spoiler to look at the map. Just type in Google "Game of Thrones map" and the first result will be "Interactive Game of Thrones Map with Spoilers Control". Look it up, it's really fun.

Milorad

This whole episode I was thinking this one will hit them extra hard. You both have a real good sense of the universe more than I did when I started watching it. Then I read the books. I think I’m more excited watching you guys react then I was watching the show!

Frankie Leyva

Oberyn was a legendary fighter, he can fight with any weapon, he choose spear because it gives range, and mountain is huge guy with huge sword so you need range, he so well calculated it, sad to see him go due to his arrogance. Really amazing character top 3 in entire show for me , not on first place just cause i didnt see enough of him unfortunately .

Mirnes Jahić

I absolutely love the unpredictability of the show. Like Baelish said this episode, people die all the time in so many ways. If we keep all these characters we love alive, there are no consequences and the show becomes predictable. Spartan said at the end of the review "It's ruthless" and that encapsulates the whole GoT world perectly. It's real and brutal.

Roma

"Elia of Dorne," they all heard Ser Gregor say, when they were close enough to kiss. His deep voice boomed within the helm. "I killed her screaming whelp." He thrust his free hand into Oberyn's unprotected face, pushing steel fingers into his eyes. "Then I raped her." Clegane slammed his fist into the Dornishman's mouth, making splinters of his teeth. "Then I smashed her fucking head in. Like this." As he drew back his huge fist, the blood on his gauntlet seemed to smoke in the cold dawn air. There was a sickening crunch. Ellaria Sand screamed in terror, and Tyrion's breakfast came boiling back up.

Evilsponge

Been waiting for this one. Jorah's storyline, mountain vs viper, Sansa and Littlefinger, even the Aria laughing when she finds out about her aunts death. Such a great episode, and fantastic reaction! love you guys <3

Christian Stewart

Another interpretation is that cousin Orson is the writer, and beetles are all the characters.

Milorad

Tywin has many rocks with which he smashes beetles, but The Mountain is the biggest rock of them all :)

Milorad

Always crazy to see this reaction! because it was heartbreaking for me!!! i loved oberyn.....

rehat kaur

When this episode came out, I'll never forget so many people, all at the same time, writing about "Darth Sansa" because of that epic black dress and black nullification-sign necklace with the black shoulder feathers. It's an epic outfit. I remember thinking "shiiiiit!!" when she walked down those stairs. And the next day, so many posts about Darth Sansa. I still remember that so vividly. And RIP Prince Oberyn...only the writers of GoT and an actor like Pedro Pascal can make a character a lasting fan-favorite character in so few scenes in not even an entire season of a show.

David Thomas

If he hadn’t taunted him, he would have easily killed him. Shoved that spear right through Ser Gregor’s head. Alas, he let Gregor knock him down and overpower him to his end. I remember the first time I saw this episode. They really get you don’t they? Lol.

GoTJake

Pudgeys comment about throwing the spear at Cersei's forehead made me laugh out loud. What a great image, goodbye smirk and wine glass! Oberyn got too emotional during the fight unfortunately. Wish he was in the show longer. On a personal note it was good to see a masculine queer character on screen, as a lot of people just think all queer men as feminine or unmanly. Not that there's anything wrong with being feminine.

Josh Jones

I think this is my new favorite reaction channel!😂Love your reactions and you guys have good discussions before and after the episode

N_JR

I still remember watching this ep with the family and the pure joy and cheering because we thought Oberyn had won was epic…..for a whole 5 seconds and then boom another great character dead and Cersei’s stupid smirk. So many times i wanted to quit this show and I almost did after Oberyn but I’m glad I held on in there

Andy B

When Spartan and Pudgey start gushing over how much they love a character they should fasten their seatbelts.

Daniel Siegel

spartan, don't worry, got has 8 seasons, according to your model it should work out ;)

fritz

Hearing a confident badass like Oberyn screaming like that was so disturbing, one of the most brutal deaths I've ever seen. Pedro Pascal did such a great job playing Oberyn, it made his death so much more heart breaking.

James K

It's crazy how characters like Ned and Oberyn are in the show for not even a full season but are fan favorites.

Munir

That combat scene is painful every time I watch it. For some reason, I try to convince myself that he'll win, even though I know what's about to happen.

Steffen Eide

Rule number one in GOT: If it's getting too good? Be very wary! ;)

Blackfyre

35:58 Pudgey's face mirroring Ellaria's is absolute gold (sorry Pudgey).

Mzuka

In real life people die all the time before their story is completed, lol it was great.

Jermaine Lee

Pudgey hit the nail on the head. "We've been ROB-bed lol. Exactly. :) The devastation on your faces is priceless. After all the times I've seen this show I cant beleive I still that it will not go this way, I keep rooting for my man Pedro. I feel your pain guys, I really do. Great stuff as always, thank you. :)

SuddenImpulse

probably my favorite episode of the entire show

Ziltoidia

next episode is an absolute banger

Locke

Hahah to see people watch this show for the first time is priceless 🤣 all your hopes and dream shattered 😲 that's how we all felt watching this show for the first time.. For someone who has seen this show many many times lol the faces of the newbies is amazing. But keep watching yall. You have to see how this story unfolds.

Pharoess

Yes Aryas joker laugh was very much like Pudgeys lol

Valcor

i felt so bad for them last episode

Locke

The Beetle Story: The writers explained in the Inside-the-Episode featurette that their intention was that faced with his probable death, Tyrion's mind is wandering to question why seemingly random acts of brutality happen in the world, and that he saw Orson smashing beetles as a sort of microcosm of this question. The analogy is that if Orson was an almighty force inflicting death and destruction on insects, if there is a higher power inflicting death and destruction on human beings—whatever god, gods, "nature", or "fate" this power may be—Tyrion would at least feel better knowing there was some underlying reason that went into causing such brutality. He also wouldn't be particularly upset if there are no higher powers, and bad things truly happen at random. But Tyrion felt that Orson wasn't acting randomly, some sort of decision-making process was going into his actions, though he could not discern it: what frightens Tyrion is that some unknown, but still reasoning thing or cosmic powers are intentionally directing people towards death and destruction, yet all of our attempts to comprehend why they are doing this (even a simple reason like "hate") are in vain. The scene is very similar to a famous one from the Stanley Kubrick film Paths of Glory, in which a condemned man sees a cockroach and laments "Tomorrow morning we'll be dead and it'll be alive. It will have more contact with my wife and child than I will. I'll be nothing, and it'll be alive." His fellow prisoner then crushes the cockroach and says, "Now you've got the edge on him." While Benioff and Weiss didn't explicitly state that they were recalling this film, shortly afterwards they mentioned in an interview that they and the production team are fans of Paths of Glory and used it as a visual reference for certain war scenes - so the similarity is probably not coincidental. It's possible that the character of Orson Lannister is a jab at the writer Orson Scott Card, who once disparaged the show.

SuddenImpulse

Oberyn wanted the confession of the mountain for Tywin so that everyone knew and he would go after Tywin

Tayyib Majumder

Oberon wanted him to confess that Tywin gave him the order. Yes he was stupid for not killing him when he had won but that was the reason.

Valcor

God same. I thought damn, Christmas has come early

Sean van Hengel

This was amazing

Sean van Hengel

Guys, Oberyn is one of my favorite GoT characters. He was such a charismatic, interesting, intriguing guy—just a brilliantly written (and portrayed) character and his is the one death I never really got over. He was soooo freakin’ close. He had it won and… he blew it. Ugggh. Tbf, I love that one of his defining traits (confidence) is what cost him his life (just like Ned) but I really, really hate that he died. I was both excited and dreading this one for you guys. I’m glad you’ve finally seen it though!

Shay

Looking back, i think Tyrion's beetle-smashing story is one of the most meaningful scenes. It's kinda a hidden reminder of all the death in this world before Oberyn is killed. I interpreted Orson as the gods senselessly killing the innocent. Young Tyrion is Oberyn trying to defend the innocent and find justice, but like Tyrion, the gods just pushed him aside and he gets crushed like one of Orson's beetles. Love Tyrion's remark about how a trial by combat should tell you something about the gods.

Jared

The reason Oberyn was so eager to get the Mountain to confess is because the ruling prince of Dorne (Oberyn's older brother) said that the Dornish would start a war against the Lannisters but only if there was a first hand confession about Tywin being the one who gave the Mountain the order to kill Elia Martell and her children. Also, Oberyn is known for impregnating his weapons with slow poison. He got overconfident towards the end of the combat because the moment he cut the Mountain's leg with the spear he knew he was already dead and that he already had his desired revenge.

Mar

should be fixed we changed to the youtube player

CpaSpartan Pudgey

To me it seemed that Tyrion was thinking that he will never get the answer for why was his cousin smashing all of these beetles if he ends up dying.

Oron Bar

Those faces should be the YT thumbnail lol

Bibity bop

Is the new integrated player sometimes incredibly laggy for anyone else? It's not really the connection speed I don't think, the audio keeps playing smoothly for the most part, it's just the video that stutters..

Sebastian Schon

We have to praise this show / books for giving us amazing characters non-stop: I still miss king Robert, I miss Ned, I miss Oberyn, I miss Rob, so many characters. Oberyn is such a good example: such a short time on screen / page but left an impression. Such good storytelling. Can't wait for you to see the rest of the story.

S.

poor pudgey's face went from exuberating thrill to utter shock and dismay. The key I feel like George RR Martin wanted to portray in his GOT stories is that there is no main character. Westeros is the main character. Good people live and die. Bad people live and die, and everything in between. The compelling storycraft is not a fairytale ending so much as it is the drama and struggle of the journey.

Augustine Lee

Whenever I rewatch this series, I always skip that final scene after Oberyn knocks the Mountain down since it's too heartbreaking. I did the same same with this video, and I got to say, the difference in your faces from 34:55 to 36:43 is priceless.
