Question - we need your ideas
Added 2023-02-28 00:21:26 +0000 UTCHey All!
We have a question, hoping ya'll can help us out with a solution.
On our recent YouTube community post we outlined reasons we are going to start using Patreons video upload service rather than YouTubes as our videos are getting pirated/links shared around off Patreon in comment sections.
One Patreon member brought forth a good question:
"As someone who pays for early access release patreon the only downside I can see is that I like to watch the full length reacts on my TV while I stream GOT on my laptop for the watch along. I’m unsure how patreons video service works in regards to playing on a different screen since my tv doesn’t have access to patreon"
Does anyone know if using Patreon via TV browser will work effectively?
The only other solution we have now which may be a bit inconvenient for some is to HDMI laptop to tv and have it as an extended monitor rather than mirror display, that way you can still have laptop and TV playing seperate things. either that or perhaps using chromecast. Gaming consoles may also work.
Let us know what's worked for you to help out our fellow Patrons, thanks!

Indeed, we are aware that piracy cannot be stopped, but it can be reduced and limited to a degree. When you are relying on content creation as part of your necessary income, considerations have to be made (not unlike BlindWave, Normies and other reactors have done) and the piracy for their content has honestly gotten pretty bad considering the size of their channel. We of course are going to keep an open ear to everyones thoughts, feelings and experiences with this and might consider something like Vimeo if the Patreon system is too problematic, there are not guarantees right now, just saying. The Patreon system does allow for casting and picture in picture I will say, two things not everyone seems to be aware of as its a fairly new feature of Patreon.

2023-02-28 23:48:39 +0000 UTCI connect my external monitor and display the show and reaction. I probably wouldnt be subscribed if I didnt have a second monitor since the edited version doesn't cut the frame

2023-02-28 22:47:40 +0000 UTCThis is going to be found out eventually and every reaction channel will be shut down. It is theft plain and simple. If I was a journalist I would be finding out every reaction channel that shows full videos and do a huge piece about it. How streaming services are losing subs because of this. How shareholders are losing profits. Then the streaming services would go very hard on copyright issues since they now know that reaction channels are not helping them. They should take it to the supreme court. The reaction channels would then have to pay the streaming services a percentage to use any of their videos. There is no justification for making a huge profit off of other streaming services while circumnavigating copyright law. Not only is it illegal it is immoral.

2023-02-28 21:44:43 +0000 UTC@Jacob Cantu. We have also looked at and considered Vimeo as an alternative. However we will not be posting the full content regardless. That is illegal. It's harder doe copyright holders to catch on vimeo, so it happens less often, but it is still very much illegal, and a possibility it can happen, and it's not worth risking having the content taken down, channels and accounts suspended, and financial and legal consequences of thst for the creators in the future, even if it ended up being fine for years, I've seen creators get all their content taken down years after doing things with no issues.

2023-02-28 21:40:13 +0000 UTC@dasypopidae Things wouldn't be altered if it wasn't affecting their ability to continue doing this as part time+ as intended I assure you. They put their community first. =)

2023-02-28 21:36:53 +0000 UTCYeah we don't have any intention of doing anything illegal here that can potentially jeopardize the channels content or the creators financial or legal status. It's just not with it. The edited videos are available for those that don't have the show available. For those that do, we offer plenty of assistance and support to anyone dealing with any issues related to it. What these people are doing is illegal and they are simply managing to skirt around the issue for now.

2023-02-28 21:33:28 +0000 UTCWhen you get popular enough there will be piracy and there is not really a thing you can do about it. I'd not make it harder for the early access members to watch the videos for the sake of making it a little harder for pirates. The people who wouldn't pay now would still not pay.

2023-02-28 20:56:13 +0000 UTCAny video can be pirated, but youtube makes it easier. Makes watching easier too.

2023-02-28 20:52:05 +0000 UTCI always watch your reaction casted on tv and the show directly on my phone side by side. Nothing really changes for me cause the patreon app is also able to cast on the Chromecast. Its a shame someone is Posting those links.

2023-02-28 16:56:53 +0000 UTCDo they actually see a decline in Patreon subs because of this? If not then it really isn't as big of an issue I would say. And not enough reason to decrease the user friendliness of the watch along experience.

2023-02-28 11:33:55 +0000 UTCI am a patreon on only a very few reactors the ones I am talking about mainly do anime reactions they also react to Disney+ Shows, Amazon prime shows even full movies uncut with the whole show showing one particular reactor did have copyright problems in the past with some of their full uncut anime reactions they solved that by posting their full uncut reactions of the animes they got copyrighted for on a different site they used streamable to get around that when ever they got a copyright but other than that most of their full uncut reactions they use the regular patreon site to upload videos.

2023-02-28 11:03:40 +0000 UTC"this is actually the only patreon channel that I ever seen do the whole not showing the full video thing" No offense or rudeness intended, but I am pretty skeptical of this. This is absolutely the standard for vast majority of patreons to obfuscate the syncing footage in some fashion. Idk what patreons you are subscribing to, but I have never been on a patreon in 3 years (over 20 different reactors) that shows the full content completely unaffected, that includes some of the biggest reactors as far as youtube subscriber numbers on the platforms. I highly suggest you read the actual copyright and fair use laws on the books and not take some creators word on this that wants to take advantage of their current lack of visibility to the rights holders. It is definitely illegal, Patreon just relies solely on actual claims made by the copyright holder and not on algorithm assistance like youtube, so its harder/takes longer. They are likely playing with fire and going to get burned eventually, be it 5 months or 5 years from now. One reactor I watched earlier on got their videos taken down and even was sued and they closed their youtube channel.

2023-02-28 10:12:44 +0000 UTCThe whole point in copywrite is so some one doesn't make money off your work(HBO)... The Fair use law is only 10 minutes of content per video... Doesn't matter the site!!!
Phillip
2023-02-28 09:26:19 +0000 UTCAnother reactor I watch that does use Vimeo is IT'S MR VIDEO. Might be worthwhile to reach out to other creators to get other options. He does also upload the full source material since copyright isn't an issue with Vimeo (I don't know if they'd do that, but just mentioning that it's an option)

2023-02-28 08:47:33 +0000 UTCI don't think so there are big patreon reaction channels that I am a patreon on that has been doing full uncut reactions for years this is actually the only patreon channel that I ever seen do the whole not showing the full video thing everybody else that I know of shows the whole show.

2023-02-28 08:28:21 +0000 UTC@Juan we are definitely trying to find a solution that works for everyone. Problem is they aren't that big of a channel and the pirating/link leaking has gotten quite bad already, and after a point its going to affect their financial stability to keep doing this part time. Its way to easy via youtube because you just can copy and paste the links in seconds. Someone suggested vimeo as an alternative where you aren't able to access links or download it but I personally don't have much experience with that. The Patreon video uploader is a pretty new thing from my understanding so not knowledgeable on that either.

2023-02-28 07:14:16 +0000 UTCThey are mistaken that is still illegal. It might take awhile for one of them to get noticed and hit by the company but it will happen eventually.

2023-02-28 07:11:46 +0000 UTCFor me it doesn't really matter as I don't watch two screens simultaneously. In case it helps other people: I watch the episode first on my own usually, so when I have seen reaction to GoT 4x08 for example, I go and watch ep 4x09 fairly soon after. Then when you upload that ep's reaction, I can just watch that and focus on it alone, no fuss about split screens, different devices, trying to focus on both the ep and the reaction at the same time, etc. I hope this helps someone!

2023-02-28 06:27:30 +0000 UTCThere are many reactors for G.O,T that are playing the whole show and reacting. They said they found out since it was a paid service on patreon that you can do that. It’s not playing for the general public.

2023-02-28 06:04:04 +0000 UTCFiretv stick. You can watch the HBO version on the stick for your tv. And watch the reaction video on your phone, laptop or iPad. Also if you have a Vizio tv it comes with the hbomax app like many smart TVs do. So no need for a fire tv stick.

2023-02-28 05:26:45 +0000 UTCBut it will punish everyone else who is paying. I have not used Patreon video so I don’t know if casting to a tv just works. But if it’s not then I’ll stop supporting. If casting works then it’s unfortunate to switching to another service but manageable.

2023-02-28 05:10:29 +0000 UTCAw I'm sorry to heart that. Really sucks that you're switching format because my laptop sounds like a jet plane taking off when I use patreon's upload service lol I understand where you're coming from but I wish there was a better way to encrypt the YouTube videos.

2023-02-28 04:42:29 +0000 UTCHonestly I use my laptop and do the split screen thing

2023-02-28 03:59:17 +0000 UTCI use smart things to cast to my TV

2023-02-28 03:19:19 +0000 UTCThis is true, but switching to Patreon raises the amount of effort required to pirate, which will hopefully stop a lot of it. Currently it's too easy to just share a YT link.
James K
2023-02-28 03:07:49 +0000 UTCUnfortunately, even switching to the patreon player isn’t going to stop people from pirating your videos and posting them elsewhere. There’s so many apps that allow people to download from any website that it’s literally impossible to prevent.
