Such a Doormat [Timelaps | Com]

Nick couldn’t hide his excitement, although he had signed up for the Human Space Saving Experiments months ago, he even signed up for the additional durability test, it felt like yesterday. Every day of waiting was certainly testing his durability, but now the day had finally come.

When he had read online about some new experiments in transportation where they would reduce the area taken up by a person, to then be reformed to their original state once reaching their destination, Nick was initially very much intrigued. He had always found being squashed a really nice feeling, just being snug and comfy, so when reading about what they would do, it seemed right up his alley. Not to mention that they would be paying handsomely, and Nick knew that he had to obtain a spot.

He tried for days and days, weeks and weeks, signup after signup to get his spot, but sadly the limited spaces were not too kind to him.
He had all but given up hope when he saw on the second Google Search of the Experiment, another company doing the experiment, and this one seemed to have had no people in it yet. “Bingo” Nick thought “At last, a break, now I can join and get that cash” he carried on as he entered his information and watched and waited as he received the confirmation email containing the address and time of the experiment.

But now, today it was here, and he was here. Although the location of a countryside small house seemed odd for a company, Nick’s excitement was far too high to find anything suspicious and just put it down to it being a confidential and secret location for safety. Stuffing all doubt out of his head, Nick's finger trembled with excitement as he rang the doorbell and knocked on the door.
“Hello” he called out “I’m here for the Safe Saving Experiment, my name's Nick, this is the right place right and I seem to be the only one here?”. Just then the door opened and a tall brown haired woman with a Lab Coat answered.
“Ah welcome” she said “Why your the first one. Please, come in and take a seat, ill be with you in a second” She gestured Nick inside and directed him to a small waiting room on the left of the hall, the whole place reminded Nick of the dentist.

“Thank you very much, if I may, how long until we start” Nick asked.
“Oh not long, Ill be only a few seconds to get my equipment and then we can begin” She answered, leaving the room and closing the door behind.

*Click* the door went, sounding a bit like it was locking. “Hu, odd” Nick thought, standing up and walking towards the door. He put his hand against the handle and turned, but nothing, it didn’t move. He pulled and pushed, but the door was stuck. “Ummm excuse me Miss, I think the door locked” He called out, knocking on it as he did “Hello”.

“Oh apologies” she called back, her voice muffled “That door is a bit finicky, please take a seat while I get the spare key”. Doing as she said Nick returned to his seat and relaxed a bit, believing all was ok.

But it didn’t take long for something to start bugging him, a quiet sound, sounded like hissing, like if he left the gas on at home. Nick would have thought it was just the radiators, since it was heating up a bit, but he was also feeling a bit dizzy and things looked … a …. bit …. blurry ….. wait… that kissing ….. IT WA…. S GASSSssss……

Everything faded into black as Nick fell into a deep sleep

“Waky waky” a voice called out to Nick, as he came too “There we are, have to be awake to undergo the treatment, otherwise I can’t monitor you” the Scientist said. All Nick could see were bright lights as his eyes adjusted, he tried to move, to speak, to blink, but nothing, he couldn’t move a bone in his body, all he could move was his eyes, looking around frantically.

“Don’t worry honey” the scientist said, noticing his panic “It is just some muscle relaxants, will keep you in-place and help the morphin chemical get to work. You will be able to move one it wears off, if you can still move that is”.
“Wait, what was that last part” Nick thought “What did she mean by that”. Nicks blacked and strained his eyes as his vision returned to focus. Looking around he saw where he was, it was like an operation room, full of shiny clean metal everywhere. Excpt he wasn’t on a bed, but on what looked and felt like a large cold slab of metal, with another above. Being nice and reflective he could see himself perfectly, although he was nude he did appear to be completely ok and unharmed “Oh thank goodness” he thought “at least I have that going for me”

Just then nick could feel something, like pins and needles ending, he tried to move and wiggle and BINGO, he saw in the reflection as his fingers started to regain some movement, “Haha, good good, now if I can just get the rest and I try and get out of here as I am not tied down or anything”, Nick had a feeling this was all pretty suspicious but waking up, unable to move, was the final straw. Now he had to get out of here as clearly this was not what he signed up for.

First his fingers, then his toes, then his hands and feet. Bit by bit he could start moving his body, although nothing useful it was a start and he just had to keep trying, as long as he when unnot-
“Oh my” the scientist called, noticing the small movements Nick had started to make “Seems someone has a high tolerance, I best hurry”. She quickly rushed over to a small control panel, clicking a few buttons and flicking a switch. “There we are, now get ready my little Rug Rat”

Just then Nick felt the board he was on start to vibrate, just watched as the large slab above him slowly rose up and then fall.
“AH-” a split second he yelled as his voice returned, only to be cut off by the slam of the metal, plunging Nick into darkness.

Nick braced for the pain, for the feeling of his body being crushed, but nothing. He didn’t feel anything, it was like someone had only turned off the lights.
Sure he could feel the cold metal on his front and back now, but there was no pain, not an uncomfortable or tight feeling. What was going on.

Just then the slab rose up, as slowly as it had before, and as Nick was thrown into the light once more, that's when he saw it, him, his reflection, what he was.
Nick was flat, completely flat, as flat as a pancake, but why didn’t it hurt, why was he still alive, why did it feel “nice” for some reason.

“Ah, you came out perfectly” the Scientist said, bending over and shadowing Nick “Now it will take a few days for your body to morph into the correct shape, but I can’t wait that long to use you, so let's get to it”. Just then Nick watched in the reflection as she grabbed his legs and started to roll him up like a carpet. From knees, to waist, to chest and finally his face as he was once more plunged into darkness, only being able to see his own flattened neck.

*FLOOP* Nick felt as his flat body was flopped into the air, landing gently on the ground by why seemed to be the front door. “There we go” the scientist examined “perfect size, well will be. Now it is so muddy out in those fields, and you will make a perfect new doormat for me to get my shoes nice and clean”
Nick’s eyes widened, processing what she just said “YOUR NEW WHAT” he shouted in his head, unable to make any vocals at all.

“Oh my” the scientist said, realizing Nick’s expression “looks like someone is also excited, why don’t we do a little maiden test”. Nick watched in horror as she quickly popped on some boots and practically flew out the door, having left the door open he watched as she really went all in, muddying up her boots and getting them nice and dirty, and then she started to return.

Nick struggled and strained with all his might, trying with every fiber of his body to move. Every step of hers shooting spikes into his eyes, until she was right above him

*Squelch* Nick felt he wet heavy mud soaked boots landing on his face, being pressed down and followed by the weight of her body. Nick felt as it pushed against him, his body being even moved compressed and soaking in all the mud. He felt as she started to wipe, the strands of soil and bits of grass being carved onto his once clean nice body.

But something was off, something was strange, it felt weird and strange, but it didn’t feel bad or wrong, it felt like he was perfect for this. Perfect for his job of cleaning her shoes.
“NO” Nick snapped in his mind “Don’t be stupid, I am a human, I am a man, not some stupid mat for her to clean on.

A sigh of relief, and a bit of disappointment, as the scientist stepped on Nick, bending down to admire him and her boots. “Perfect”, she exclaimed, “Looks like you worked perfectly, having absorbed everything and making my boots nice and clean. Great job”

“Now, you did sign up for several months of testing after all, and I for one can’t wait”

And that was Nicks life for the next few months, ever day it was his job to clean his owners shoes, weather they be the heavy boots, the soft pumps or the pointy heels, it was his job to clean them all. Some days he would get so dirty that his owner would put him in the washing machine and give him a good clean. These days he hated the most, being away from his owner and being clean, it was really uncomfortable.

Over the cause of the months though, his body started to morph into a more appropriate shape to fit his new life. His arms and legs reseeded, and his neck, head and body started to straighten and square out. But Nick didn’t mind, Nick didn’t care, I mean why would a doormat need aren’t and legs, didn’t seem right and felt a bit inefficient when it came to cleaning.

One thing he did miss though was his pattern, he had vague memories of having a human body pattern on him, but over the months of first and cleaning that pattern had all but faded, resulting in a mat light brown across his rectangle form. But overall Nick didn’t mind the pattern or not, he cleaned his owner all the same.

One day his owner even talked to him, asking him if he wanted to be a human or carry on being a doormat. I mean Nick couldn't answer, doormats don’t talk, but even if he could answer he would say no. I mean why would he want to be a human, when he was so good at being a doormat and cleaning his owner.

Sadly the individual known as Nick was never found, having gone missing many years ago. He was last seen near the house of Dr Sam, but sadly nothing had come of searching her place. Although, every investigator that went round and asked her questions would always make a note of how well her Dormant would clean their shoes, always asking where she bought it. And upon finding out it was handmade, the amount of commissions she got to make more was overwhelming.

Although Nick may be gone, the world got a fantastic Doormat producer out of it.
