I think its a concept that just doesn't automatically connect sometimes due to them being animals, and that not all animals can bend. I have seen quite a few reactors not have that click for them.

It has plot development with the takeover of Omashu and it has character development for multiple characters….I think this is one of the most underrated episodes of the avatar universe. And I gotta say how can you guys forget that animals bend when Appa literally has a arrow on his head as an air bending master lol. The badger moles are earth benders the original ones in fact. Great reaction.
