Yet…that’s not what we’ve seen onscreen. Daemon experiences grief ‘in his own way’ as he put it. He’s removes himself from family and focuses on work. We saw that in the first episode when his sister-in-law and nephew died, we saw that when his wife and unborn child died in the middle of the season and we saw that in the last episode when his child was a stillborn and he finds out his brother is dead. The show has been pretty consistent with how he processes grief. Daemon despises weakness in the Targaryens and he viewed his brother’s desire to be a dreamer as a weakness as well as his brother’s desire to maintain peace when Deamon thinks war is necessary as he did in the Stepstones and as he does against the Greens. He then sees his wife display all of the weaknesses he hated about his brother manifest itself in a short amount of time. The show has been consistent with that as well. He withdraws during grief over family and lashes out when his family displays weakness.

Just got around to watching this reaction. My delay was basically because of the point you guys made, that it seemed like there could've been something more after this. To me, this kind of felt like another episode 9, likely because of the split focus, and it doesn't give me much anticipation for season 2.

Lots of good analyses of Daemon choking Rhaenyra but personally I don't think it's that deep.
Daemon is going thru the greatest test of his life: grief for his brother, grief for his stillborn child, and to add insult to injury the Hightower treachery had his long-hated enemy Otto steal his wife's birthright given to her by Viserys. News of which prematurely triggered his wife's labor and killed his unborn child. It's a lot.
But Daemon lacks the emotional capacity to process all of it thru anything other than violence. He could have cried. Prayed. Found comfort in his wife. Leaned into her and grieve together. Like Rhaenyra, who has lost more than him. Or anyone else. Everyone is bereaved at Dragonstone. Everyone has lost something.
But Daemon does none of that because those things do not exist in his narrow emotional range. He can only rage, internally or externally, because that is the only language he is capable of speaking. It's the only way he can process this depth of negative emotions.
So in the end it comes down to what I started with and it's simple: Daemon is a violent, emotionally stunted man who can only deal with real adversity and deep suffering thru violence.

Well said Thomas. That love for his brother and the desperate need for his approval was also the reason Daemon got triggered when receiving the message from Viserys in the Stepstones and immediately lashed out at the poor messenger.

I think Daemon lost his cool with Rhaenyra because she spoke of the
prophecy that was told to her when she was made heir. Daemon was
heir before that but was never told of this which I'm sure must have
stirred a bunch of emotions for him because it was obvious Viserys
didn't have a lot of trust that he'd remain heir. If he did, he'd have
told Daemon about the prophecy. He loved his brother and desperately
wanted his trust and approval. This was just another jolt to his emotions
on top of the fact that he was grieving for both his child and brother.
It obviously doesn't excuse his behavior in any way but I think that's
what sent him over the edge. You can even see Rhaenyra kind of smirk
after he let her go and said "he never told you". She knew that set him
off.

Yeah it's weird when ppl browbeat reactors into reaching the consensus opinion.

i've always found it hilarious how some people's response to someone having a different opinion is to go "UMM NO ACTUALLY THE SCENE MADE NO SENSE..." like cmon aren't you watching these videos to see DIFFERING reactions and opinions to things, that's what makes it interesting, to see someone else's view on it. people need to relax and let them form their own views (the only exception is addressing clear mistakes, i.e spartan not picking up on the foot scene)
but anyway, cool finale :)

The scene where Nyra's giving birth, the "flashback" was just them cutting to Syrax's feeling Nyra's pain. When dragons "bond" to their riders, they can feel what their riders feel. Which was also why Luke trying (kinda failing) to tell Arrax to calm down and listen before flying, because Arrax could def feel his anxiety and make his own decisions during the flight back (which was what happened)

I agree their personalities, discussions and chemistry really put their reactions above the competition.

You guys have such great chemistry as a couple and as YouTubers! Your House of the Dragon reactions are my favorite.

I very much appreciate that consistent attention to detail. It has indeed been there ever since. You see it pretty clearly when Daemon is on the Iron Throne chambers floor being threatened by Viserys and again a little bit during the beach scene.

That mark on Daemon's neck is a scar from the fire arrow to his shoulder, from the war on the Stepstones (beginning of episode 3, when he's on Caraxes). It's a nice detail! It's been there ever since, but it also took me some time to realize why the skin texture looked different around that area lol

I don't think he meant for Fire and Blood especially. Otherwise he probably should have named the Tully's in the Dance time-frame something other than Grover, Oscar, Kermit and Elmo.

This show does a great job at building tension and does a great job of bringing out the emotion in scenes that are pretty mundane otherwise. I only mention the last part because of the end of last week's episode, so unnecessary. The best scene in the show is an old man walking across a room to sit down, when you can do things like that, you don't need the needless spectacle of mass murder to get a point across.

Some clarification on the dragons. A dragonrider can only bond with and "control" a single dragon. But as we saw this episode is that there is an illusion of "control". A dragon is a living breathing thing, Arrax wasn't listening to Luke and Vhagar wasn't listening to Aemond. This is my own opinion but there was something going on with Arrax and Vhagar even at Storm's End, Arrax was acting weird from moment that Luke dismounted and Arrax attacked Vhagar on its own, and Vhagar went after Arrax in return. Arrax was young and inexperienced and Vhagar is an old grizzled veteran of the conquest. Combine that with the dragons vicariously experience the emotions of their riders and it was a recipe for disaster. Aegon rode Belarion, his sisters rode the other two dragons, Aegon didn't have 'control' over them. My interpretation of the scene with Daemon is that Verminthor had been riderless for over two decades at that point and had not been ridden for maybe60 years. Daemon is getting Verminthor accustomed to human contact again. His goal isn't to bond with Verminthor, its to ease the process of whoever comes to bond with Verminthor. Verminthor, by the way is the second largest dragon in the world after Vhagar. The third largest is one of the three wild dragons that reside on Dragonstone, The Cannibal.

The dragon flight scene was so well done, I was so stressed and on the edge of my seat the whole time. When you first see vhagar’s silhouette flying above arrax, that was legitimately so terrifying and intimidating.

I don't blame Spartan (or anyone) for the Valyrian/Velaryon confusion.
The source material is a book so obviously the names are easily distinguished on the page. GRRM never expected this story to be on TV, otherwise doubtless he would have named the Velaryons differently.
Relatedly, a couple of *first names* on GOT were changed from the books for that very reason: they sounded too similar to those of other major characters (there would have been THREE Robert/Robb in the show otherwise, for example).
But Velaryon is a *family* name and an important one in this story. To change it would have fucked with the universe and confused those who both read the books and watch the show.
