ACTUALLY, the anime changed the ending of this whole “Rins Adventure”. They did it because originally it had a grim ending, but it was necessary for her character and by giving it a “happy ending” there was not much point for this storyline In the Light Novel, Rin is not able to save the kids. And almost dies as well. This segment of the story shows how Rins mentality changes to the one we see in FSN. Where she is more of a realist and does not bother with stuff she deems impossible for her to do That is the original take away of this segment of the story. It shows us how Rin “grows up” from her innocent mentality.
