It's really rare finding people who know absolutely nothing about Star Wars :) Most people I've watched usually know about lightsabers, or what Darth Vader looks like. Star Wars had such a MASSIVE influence on pop culture, it's good you're watching, as a lot of films reference Star Wars (even Lord of the Rings had a small nod to it).
Yes, it does start at Episode 4. About 20 years later, George Lucas went back and made Episodes 1 - 3, but it's better to watch them in the order they were released. If you enjoy them (and it looks like you are already), then it can be fun to go back and watch what happened in the past in the first 3 episodes, although to me they don't quite have the same magic.
Particularly for this episode, just remember it was the very first one ever made, and they didn't have anywhere near as much of a budget. Also some of the special effects didn't exist before Star Wars, Lucas and his team had to invent them - so things get a little more refined (and expensive) in the next couple of films.
And don't worry about mocking Leia's haircut - there are about a million parodies of it. She never wears her hair like this again, so you can relax!

No need to let that go. It is an important issue and George Lucas must be held accountable for it π

This movie was my 1980s childhood. The last 13 minutes of this movie (the trench run) is burned into my brain π
And you were right to comment that the battle between Obi Wan and Vader - it really is poor π

PSA...... Han Shot first!!!! I know it's an old issue but I'll never let that nonsense go. Han would have shot the alien without warning. That's his character. π€ Nerd moment over ...

I wish I had known that you were thinking of watching these movies because I could have gotten you the actual 1977/1980/1983 Star Wars films, instead of these which are essentially versions that have been messed with. They did touch up the special effects which isn't so bad, but they added a bunch of garbage (like the rats in Mos Eisely and a bunch of other jokey stuff) and altered scenes like when the Green Rodian Greedo confronts Han Solo (aka Indiana Jones) in the bar.
Have you watched Episode 5 and 6 yet? If not, let me know and I will get you versions without added garbage. I have versions with touched up special effects but without other changes.

As it said in the opening of the film, Star Wars takes place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." So no Earth ever in these stories.

"That John Williams score gets me every time!" Same here, same here. One of my favorite movie score moments is when Luke is almost ready to fire his torpedoes, where you have the horn section alternating notes and it transitions into the symphonic strings theme while Obi-Wan says "Use the Force, Luke!" What a moment. One of countless great musical moments in this trilogy.

I first watched this in 1977 when it first cane out. I was 13 years old and my mother took me. The queue stretched out of the cinema and around the block. She fell asleep during it. I believe I next watched it in a cinema in 1984 when it was combined with the other two original Star War movies one afternoon and evening, followed the next morning by the then only three existing Star Trek movies. 6 movies in 24 hours and numerous cokes left me buzzing to say the least!

Fun fact: you ladies are watching the "Special Edition" versions of these movies (2011 blu ray version I think), which has a lot of added CGI elements, updated explosions, some added/changed scenes, changed music, etc...
For instance, when Han tells Jaba (the alien) "Jaba, you're a wonderful human being," that is an original deleted scene when Jaba was actually a human character. Or in the bar where Han Solo shoots the alien guy... in the Special Edition, they make the green alien shoot first, and Han shoots back. But in the original, Han just kills the alien guy outright. That moment alone has been changed 5 times in various releases.
There are even teams of volunteers who dedicate time to preserving the original versions of the movies in various ways, Harmy's Despecialized Editions, Project 4k, Revisited, Silver Screen Edition, and many other fan projects!

great reaction, really enjoyed it, hope you react to all of the Skywalker saga (which would be episodes 4, 5 and 6, then 1, 2 and 3 and finally 7, 8 and 9, there are other spinoff films and TV shows but you can always watch them later if you wish), people tend to get really opinionated about Star Wars and which films are good and which are bad and you will probably see that in the comments, but I think it's best for you two to form your own opinions about which movies and characters you like so don't pay too much attention to that stuff, I think every movie has something in it to enjoy even if i definitely prefer some movies to others, anyway, it's been fun seeing you two go through these major franchises, I would suggest the Pirates of the Caribbean movies if you want a similar epic franchise, oh and I haven't seen Tien on here in a bit, is she going to feature in any upcoming reactions?

The first three are good. The next three are... different. The last three didn't need to be made.

George Lucas, the writer/director of Star Wars, and Steven Spielberg are actually good friends and support each other's careers. Spielberg told Lucas he wanted to make a 007 movie, but George said he had a better idea and they made Indiana Jones.
I originally saw Star Wars - A New Hope- when I was just seven years old, and it really blew my mind. I really related to Luke Skywalker because I was also growing up on a farm. Unfortunately, no droids to help with the work.
I'm looking forward to your reaction to the next film, The Empire Strikes Back.

Just beginning the watch, and already two points of interest to note:
β my surprise at the ladies knowing roman numeral counting (I've known many english-as-first-language folks, both young & older, that don't know of it)
β the first time (that I'm aware of) which we get to hear the ladies read sections of text out loud... Chi as custom narrator, an unexpected treat.
