Some non canon stupidity where Kat and Tara have a run in with science.

Maybe don't go messing around with viscous black substances you're not familiar with... or do, I'm not your mom.

From a short chat with Sui about the idea:

Rab: The symbiote thing feeds off of brain chemicals, mainly endorphins, so it cranks up production of them in the host. It's not intelligent but it doesn't kill it's food supply, it'll feed on them then detach and find someone else or remain in place but dormant, partially releasing the host so they can fend for them selves but sticking around as a living suit.

Either way it leaves the hosts depressed, so the thing I was trying to say in chat was that they'll wake up naked and sad in about a week, but they'll be fine.

Sui: Aaah. Literally drained of their good chemicals

Rab: I was thinking it mightve been a nanite based experimental emergency protective suit that didn't quite work how it was intended.

But anyways, that's all the thoughts I had on it.

Sui: My thoughts are that it was designed to react to natural chemical changes in the body when stress or combat situations arose and deploy automatically, but it's missing some triggers and only responds to endorphins, leading it to a skewed feedback loop where it's rewarded for controlling people like this.
