Facing Discomfort

For many of us, we aren’t taught how to face discomfort as kids. Often, the adults around us didn’t know how to face discomfort themselves. Many of us live in a society that teaches people to tune out. To not face our discomfort. To reach instead for junk food, or a phone app, television, surfing the internet. To find things that distract us from discomfort. From hard experiences. From hard thoughts and feelings.
So often we are prevented from doing things that we want to do, that we cannot get ourselves to do. We would rather avoid discomfort. We sidestep, and write over our discomfort.
If we can face our discomfort, we can discover something new. We discover that it changes. We discover that we can be with discomfort. We have the strength in us to feel pain, to feel anxiety, to feel sadness, boredom, or fear.
And when we exercise that strength, it grows stronger.
When we sit with discomfort, it can be transformed into other feelings. It becomes honesty and authenticity. It becomes the courage to do difficult things in life. The courage to take risks. The courage to be ourselves.
