KevB(rewski)

for the record i am Great Scott and i did not sponsor this. must be Scott A above. but great choices everyone!

Great Scott

Great stuff by Mancini. And some iconic movies.

Murdock Moriarty

Good question! Because I might like to suggest Stop Making Sense!

JK

Sorry I'm late. Wonderful selections guys/gals. Loved them all. The buildup in "Hatari" was impressive. Great addition of Moon River. Had just watched a week or two ago. Question, would we be allowed to add video for a marathon like this? Like actually showing the movie.

Dave

Hey, godmother of the channel Michelle Michelle I was really happy that you selected a shot in the dark. Great second to The Pink Panther Theme. As far as the movies go, I think I like a shot in the dark a little better. I thought it was actually the first movie pink panther was released first, but I think they finished filming on a a shot in the dark first. I’m not sure in what order Mancini wrote the themes for them. I have enjoyed all of your selections and comments. I was instantly a fan of Nick and Lexi‘s reactions when I first started watching reactions during the pandemic. I love their enthusiasm, their honesty smiles and their relationship is so special. So happy to share the reaction with you. JK and Debra. All your inspiration and selections for the channel is what gave me the enthusiasm and energy to get involved in the comments.

Hey JK Lujon was a great choice. It was one I was going to put in for sure if you hadn’t selected it. I’m so glad you did. There’s another song blue mantilla, which is kind of a distant second delusion that I like a lot. Lots of fun fun to share.

Scott Anderson

Hey Deb, I’m so happy you picked the Molly Maguires any song you picked would’ve been great. It’s kind of funny, but I think I would’ve picked the three songs that JK Michelle and you’ve picked if I did the Marathon by myself because they’re all my some of favorites. I had heard the Molly Maguires the same as you lingering around pIn the background and never knowing what it was and when I bought a 3 CD set ofI Mancini I discovered what it was and then I went and watched the movie with a young Sean Connery. Always been one of my faves.

Scott Anderson

That was SO much fun! Thank you Scott for so generously sponsoring it, Nick for the great reaction and Scott, Michele, and JK for your wonderful picks! "A Shot In The Dark" is a family favorite, as my dad loved The Pink Panther movies, as does my husband, who has played the ASITD and TPP songs in his big band. I love Mancini's lush "Lujon", but I'm more familiar (since I was 10!) with the same song by Sergio Mendez and Brazil '66'- "Slow Hot Wind", from their first album- the one with their first hit, "Mas Que Nada." They both are gorgeous. I have to tell you why I picked "The Theme From The Molly MacGuires." I first heard it at a synchronized swimming show in high school. I liked it, but never thought about what it was. I would sometimes listen to a Canadian radio station (CHYR) late at night in my room and they occasionally played it. Still, I didn't know what it was. Jump to 1986 and I was walking with my boyfriend on a beautiful summer night and I heard it coming from the house of an acquaintance. I knocked on the door to ask what the song was, but they said it was on the radio. They said it was WKAR, from East Lansing, so when we got to my boyfriend's apartment I called the station. I sang the beginning of the song to the DJ, thinking he could tell me, but alas, he was clueless. Jump another 10 years and my husband came home from the library with a box set of Mancini CDs. While playing them, this song came on and I gasped and started to cry. My 3 year old looked concerned until I told him how happy I was to finally know what the mystery song was!! Nick, fyi, the instruments playing the melody are 1. pennywhistle, 2. accordian, 3. bassoon. When the key changes, I believe it is a zither you hear strumming on 3, 5, 1, 3, 5, etc. (assuming I'm correct that it is in 6/4). That is an Irish harp at the beginning and the end. Scott, I had not heard your selections before, but they knocked my socks off! "Dreamsville" was sublime- I'm a sucker for a brass choir, and the guitar and sax solos were ultra tasty! Nick, those were brushes on the drums. Hatari was really incredibly scored- I loved the marimba and the African thumb piano (aka Mbira or Kalimba) at the beginning, and then the build up as he added more instruments and accelerated the tempo. He truly was a master! Thanks again, everybody!!!!!!!!!!!🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

Debra Brabenec

Actually, The Tonight Show theme was written by Paul Anka and Johnny Carson 🙂

What made Mancini a genius - and I use that word sparingly - was his amazing range. He could make you laugh, cry, scream, sigh, and smile depending on the movie genre. And he could do them all. And at the same time, have a recognizable style. Ranks up there with John Williams and John Barry, even Bernard Herrman. Astounding. This was one of my favorite reactions, Nick. I hope more people get to see it! And thanks to Scott for letting me be part of it. A Part Two is in order!

JK

Thanks so much, Scott and Nick! That was fun. Very generous too. I’ll return the favor - we’ll discuss a theme. Mancini appeals to me because I usually hear a percussive element (no matter what the instrument, it’s played rhythmically). I also notice the swells of emotion with horns or strings. Fun. 😽💗

Michele

Thanks for the great reaction I’m glad you added the Audrey Hepburn version of Moon River. The other version from the movie has a vocal chorus that is so 50’s / 60’s Hollywood. It has always made me cringe. My dads favorite rendition from back in the day was with Andy Williams singing it. Michelle Michelle, JK, and Debra all had great selections.

Scott Anderson

I love the Pink Panther movies and Henry Mancini's music! At least the music of his that I've heard. There have been many times where I hear some music and my thought is "ooh, I like that". Then I subsequently find out that it's by Mancini! It seems to have a special something about it.

Doug Fenske

Henry Mancini also wrote the Tonight Show theme song along with Johnny Carson, so Carson got $300 every time it was played on TV. He made million$ over the course of the show.
