It's a pretty common anime trope for tests, competitions or training to have a lethal element to it. Usually with some sort of "If you die you weren't fit/worthy to begin with" argument. You're going to stumble a lot over the "deadly tournament arc" (when they don't really have to be) the more you watch ๐
