Here’s an interesting fact:
The person Askeladd is talking about — Lucius Artorius Castus — was a Roman general stationed in the province of Britannia (modern-day England and Wales). He led a successful defense against an invasion by a Germanic tribe from what is now Northern Germany or Denmark. Because of this, he became well-known in the region.
Three centuries later, the Roman province of Britannia would fall to the Anglo-Saxon invasion. The native Celts were pushed out of England and forced to flee west, into Wales and Scotland. Among these displaced peoples, the story of Artorius lived on. They believed he would one day return to free their lands — and over time, his legend grew.
Eventually, the tale spread into Anglo-Saxon culture as well. They adapted it, added their own touches, and what began as the story of a Roman general slowly evolved into the legend of King Arthur and the Round Table.
Disclaimer: It isn't certain if this is where the Legend of King Arthur came from, but it's one of the most popular theories.
