He would seize power and change the world for the better. However, once he got the crown, that power just corrupted him. Canute is trying to revolt from God by achieving a perfect world on earth, but men are easily corrupted by power. In this scene, it’s almost like Canute is looking at a mirror into his future when talking with the king

But once he gained the crown, the weight and corruption of power slowly “warped” him with age. That’s why Canute keeps pushing the king when he says the “crown has a mind of its own.” The king is well aware of his corruption. Shelly nailed it when she mentioned the Ring from Lord of the Rings… a perfect metaphor for how power can twist and consume someone over time
