Just starting this episode reaction so maybe you've come to this conclusion a little later on, but it's intended to be understood at this point that L does not know about Death Notes. Of course... perhaps that's also intended to throw you off. Regardless, the reason behind L maintaining his anonymity is simply to protect himself against individuals he's caught, those associated with them, and of course those he's currently investigating.
