The First of the Fifth crawled her way out of the hive, shimming about to maneuver her body out the entrance with as little disruption to the production lines as possible. Her new evolution was truly amazing, but she had to admit it had its downsides at times. Generally, whenever she needed to move.

But movement was necessary today. The First of the Fifth had much to do. The newest queen to join the hive of hives had shocked all the queens of the King with her tale. She told of hives that knew not the glory of the King and who were so vicious towards one another that they would even attack each other. And not only would the hive of hives now come into contact with such bees, they were sending one of their own number to live among them. The First of the Fifth’s very own descendent, even.

The hive of hives needed to ensure her First Daughter’s Third Daughter was fully prepared for such an environment. Beyond that, they needed to be prepared for a potential conflict with the vicious queens, whether to intervene on behalf of her First Daughter’s Third Daughter, or to defend their own home. And for that, they needed honey. They needed honey to expand their hives, they needed honey to raise evolved soldiers, they needed to create stockpiles for times of great need, and they needed to continue evolving queens. The First of the Fifth’s honey would be in even greater demand than ever before.

Not to mention, she didn’t need a communer to feel her First Daughter’s utter commitment to protect her own child. And, well, she knew exactly why her First Daughter would feel that way. She felt a stinger pierce her own torso knowing her First Daughter was still driven by events that she had caused. So, she would spare nothing ensuring the hive of hives was completely ready to assist First Daughter’s Third Daughter as necessary.

Except for this. Having made her way out of the hive, she looked over the preparations with her own eyes. Two trays of swirled honey shone bright in the light as workers attached them to soldiers via the Fourth of the Seventh’s woven stems. They saluted to her, indicating all was ready. The First of the Fifth acknowledged them before beating her wings and slowly rising into the air herself.

Even though she desperately needed to start evolving her own hive into honeyswirlers in order to scale up production, she had not. She had gone and made two whole trays of swirled honey all on her own, reserving it for the journey she now embarked on. She slowly, ponderously led the way as her soldiers carefully carried the two trays behind her.

One would be brought to the King and offered at his table. The first taste of her new honey should be his. That was the one thing the First of the Fifth couldn’t bring herself to compromise on.

As for the other, the First of the Fifth had the soldiers bring the tray to the Queen of All Bees’ shrine, laying it down in her chest. The First of the Fifth then danced before shrine.

“Thank Queen of All Bees for showing way of honey. Will do best to make better honey, like Queen of All Bees.”

The Queen of All Bees was the only other who deserved to share this first taste with the King. After all, it had been the Queen of All Bees’ honey that had opened her eyes and revealed how far her own had to go. It had been that taste that showed the First of the Fifth her ideal place within the hive of hives. Her discussions with her First Daughter’s Third Daughter on how to deal with rival queens had been…concerning. It was frighteningly easy to fall back into her previous mindset before she truly understood the King and what he was trying to achieve. So, the First of the Fifth once again thanked the Queen of All Bees for showing her the way just before her own evolution and resolved herself to focus fully on the honey from now on.

As she finished her dance, the shrine and the chest both began to glow bright. She felt something resonate in her mana, a little spark lit when she had tasted the Queen of All Bees’ honey. She knew, fully and completely, that she was on the right path and the Queen of All Bees approved of her efforts.

She thanked the Queen of All Bees once more and then took to the air as fast as her current body could carry her. For the King, for her children, for the hive of hives, for the Queen of All Bees, and even for herself, it was time to make honey.

She wasted no time when she arrived, ordering the workers to bring her as much nectar as possible. This she processed within her body, while using her antennae to swirl already completed honey within trays elsewhere in the hive. And the very moment a cell filled with swirled honey, a honeypot would enter and curl up. With the First of the Fifth herself now able to process honey directly, she could spare the honeypots and workers from the production lines for to evolve into honeyswirlers, so that they could begin producing swirled honey directly from the lines.

And with the powerful honey she could now produce, some of the earliest honeypots were already emerging from their cells by the end of the day. Soon, she would be ready to start delivering her new honey to the hive of hives…

***

The First Butcher Queen of the First Dynasty of the First Butcher Spawner, the first of her line, hovered over her cells. Or just First Butcher as she liked to be called. Her big sisters had this whole thing about dynasties and birth order and spawners and whatnot. The First Butcher wasn’t too concerned about all that, but since her big sisters cared about it she didn’t mind when they gave her a big name too.

Especially since they also gave a bunch of honey along with it. All while the big meat sisters brought her meat…or were they drones? Apparently big meat drones also worked, which was weird, but the King was apparently also a drone but also not? The First Butcher decided to let the Conduit worry about it and accept what she was told. Point was the big meat sisters were bringing her meat every day while the bee sisters brought her honey.

This hive of hive things really was amazing! Normally, a new butcher hive would have to grow cautiously. They could feed existing adults off of flowers and nectar alone if they had to, but the young needed meat to grow and the adults wouldn’t stay healthy if they went too long without any themselves. But a small hive would have trouble hunting, so they’d have to scavenge whatever corpses they could find…or maybe try to take small bites out of big meats if they were feeling really bold and hope some of the workers escaped with their prizes.

But not her! She received powerful mana honey each day that stuffed her with energy from just a single sip! And she got at least one new corpse each day, a huge source of fresh meat normally only a well-developed hive would have access to! Even when her little sisters were born and she had to share with them, she still had a far greater abundance than any new butcher hive would have ever dreamed of.

And that let her grow her hive in a way no other new butcher hive ever would have.

She and what few workers she had hovered around a couple of really big wax pots at the center of her hive. With no need to scout for corpses to scavenge or to accept casualties biting big meats, she only needed a bare handful of workers to collect the meat, forage the nearby flowers, and build up the wax pots. Instead, she used her resources on a different kind of child.

The wax pots now began to break open. Huge, serrated mandibles ripped through the wax. The workers didn’t even get a chance to help before the bee within emerged. A bee even larger than the First Butcher stretched her wings and her legs before presenting herself to her queen. In addition to her huge mandibles, her chitin was tough yet sleek, providing protection and mobility in equal measure. Her legs featured little hooks that could grab and hold meat chunks for later transport.

The first butcher bee soldier had been born. For her big sisters, who apparently only ate nectar and pollen, soldiers were purely a drain on their hives. But it was not so for butcher bees. For a butcher bee hive, soldiers were yet another forager, one that could open up entirely new, more active means of acquiring food.

And this soldier was not alone, as all the big wax pots began to break open. Thanks to the donations by all of her big sisters, bee and meat both, the First Butcher was able to skip directly into raising soldiers. She could simultaneously skip several steps in the development of her hive while also fulfilling the King’s purpose for her.

She began to lay out her orders and the orders of the King to the new soldier squad…and then watched as they began to fly. Within mere days of starting her hive, she was ready to begin the hunt.

Author’s Note:

More food, more bees! More honey and…meat honey! We can now convert honey into better honey and non-bees into bees!

So, you know, good luck to any hypothetical individuals, bee or non-bee, that might deign to challenge the hive of hives. Fortunately, there’s no one like that, right?

Anyways!

How will the First of the Fifth’s new honey impact the hive of hives? What can she achieve when fully committed to the path of honey? What role will the First Butcher play in the hive of hives now that her hive is getting up and running? Tune in next time, to find out!

HUNTER BEES HUNTER BEES!

The furry in your walls in your walls

I don't think the soldier bees change the comparison a ton when both sides have it.

Typo? The First of the Fifth crawled her way out of the hive, shimming(shimmying) about to maneuver her body out the entrance with as little disruption -Shimming seems to be something about wedges according to google she could spare the honeypots and workers from the production lines for (them) to evolve into honeyswirlers, -Seems to me you missed them

Well the soilder class of bee is technically evolved for for combat. And I was just thinking about how they would fight differently, because of their base species.

Durphymcbob

I think there is not much point comparing based on classes when butcher bees are plain superior in combat. we are talking about honey bees vs bees that have evolved into predators.

phantom

Well yes i see where you are coming from as all bees are more dexterity based and dodge of weave, and are quite similar in that way. I was talking more about their fighting style and personality. The default bee soilders are more regimented and fight in larger groups like a generic soilder. Fighting side by side in formation rotating out in waves of attack. While the butcher soilders would work in smaller groups stralking their prey like well a hunter using their carnivore instincts, and then when the moment arrives all jump out and ambush and brawl with the target until defeated. Perfect for the Fey forrest. They are the Marines to the army, for the bees.

Durphymcbob

While I see how the butcher sprayers would be a bit "weaker" I envision them as a little faster and their meat diet might lead to their acid being more concentrated and potent.

Thanks for the chapter, loved it. So 1st of 5th has offered her new honey to belissar and the the god of bees. And they approve naturally. Lol. She proceeds to evolve her hive which will cascade into improving the entire hive of hives. Wonderful. Now the first butcher soldiers have risen. Wonderful. While I imagine there will be some donated to the army, I wonder if any of the butcher queen will desire to move to the barracks and join the army directly.

Fernando Oliveira

I think it is the other way around, no? Normal bee soldiers are quick to dart in and out of the fight, so more of a monk type fighter, maybe like a ranger. Butcher bees on the other hand seem to have more developed mandibles, making it easier to stay near the target and deal continous damage, similary to the stingless bees.

1stButcher is giving real Terminator 2 vibes. "Yeah she's a scary bastard, but she's *our* scary bastard.

I both fear and await that day with a preparatory smile on my face.

I'm just surprised we haven't had to move on to bee-adjacent puns yet

Thanks for the chapter! Ah 1st of the fifth, the hordes of hunger will learn to fear the industrial might of the Hive of Hives! And onto the butcher bees. I LIike them they are very no nonsense, in how they operate, hunt and get food on the table and do their job no need for any fancy politics. And the Butcher soldiers oh those are neat. In dnd terms I could see the butcher soilders bees more being of a melee ranger, compared to the melee fighter that is the basic soilder bee. Hmm, they do seem smart enough to maybe learn how to make archers or sprayers, maybe butcher sprayers whould just be a sprayer sized Archer weaker, but still effective.

Durphymcbob

Man...the butcher bees are going to be a major fighting part of the hive. Not needing to worry about workers is really useful. Now I wonder if maybe Belissar will need to ask for larger creatures for meat. Like deer or cows
