Illustrated Dev Diary, November 19th, 2021

Not much to report this week, just jumping in to tell you that work is progressing fine on all fronts.

I was a bit worried about the scene I was going to do this week and rightly so, as the rendering engine for Daz studio which I pose and render in, isn't really capable of producing the lighting I wanted, and in the end I went through two days of trial and error before I got something I was happy with.

But I'm about 1/3 through that scene now, and happy about the way it turned out in the end. That also means I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it seems I will be able to reach my release date goal.

This weeks numbers are at 1,122 story renders, and 8,278 animated frames. Looking at what I have left to do, then this will be the biggest single update for the game yet.

Next week will probably be less rendering than normal, as I need to fully catch up on the Renpy stuff in order to make the release date video, but it shouldn't be too long before I can give you a date.

Finally, have a nice weekend, and stay safe out there. And thank you very much for the support.

Anyway, in terms of graphics, and if we can stick as closely as possible to technological evolution, we are only at the top for a few months while a new technological advance allows realistic renderings even more breathtaking than those previously considered the most beautiful. Indeed, I have always considered those of CBD to be particularly credible, even if I think that with the redesign of its game WIAB, Ocean has just taken a new step in the matter and set the bar even higher. Probably the "cinematic and 3rd party lewd animation" module that he integrated has something to do with it. But what should not be forgotten in my opinion is that any technological component is only justified if it is at the service of history, and this is what makes LoF, for me, the best compromise on the market today

I wouldn't want to overlook the fact that the story is incredibly compelling. You have my respect for being willing to tell it.

Mr. Cranky

Gimme Holly :P Just missing Lexi for the sandwich tho.

Not at all. No you didn't. My reply was probably more in depth than I thought about at first. Iray lighting is very good, but has some limitations if you want to do something a bit outside the norm (and honestly spend every day looking at it, you feel the need to change things every once in a while) :p And about my quality, well, we all have different styles. I'm just glad you like mine.

Drifty

I realize I sounded pretentious. I won't argue your point for those types of effects. Lord knows those are challenging in real situations. I didn't think you would want a scene that elaborate for LOF, although I will say your render quality is a fair bit better than most.

Mr. Cranky

Daz studio does a very good job producing crispy clear light. But from my own background working at Institute for Photography in my home town, lights isn't always crisp clear studio lights. It's when you start introducing elements that's distorting that clear view, like smoke, smog, dust and other atmospheric elements - also referred to as volumetric lighting, that's when it really starts to suffer. That's where other engines like Octane really shines (if you've seen renders from Phillygames, you can see he utilizes this to the fullest). In addition, strong background lights like beams or similar don't play well with subsurface scattering of for example hair, making them almost invisible. So all of those things combined made a scene in the next chapter very hard to give proper lighting. :)

The Iray engine replicates actual lighting behavior. As an experienced photographer, I haven't found a situation In DAZ Studio where i couldn't get a realistic result.

Mr. Cranky

Ah, good to know, I had my eye on a 3070 untill the price went ballistic. I actually sold my 2x 2060 SLI for this all AMD setup. Figures. Thanks again.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you want to use Daz Studio and it's 'Iray' rendering engine you will have to use an Nvidia card. I would also suggest investing in another 16gb ram.

Appreciated. I have a B450/Ryzen 3600/16GB/RX 5700XT, so I guess I'll be fine for now. 20-40mins... Wow, and that doesn't include setting up the scene. I just gained a bigger appreciation for creating a VN! Thanks for the feedback. *thumbs up*

Marcase

Good news, glad it's going well and I can't wait to play the new release.

Without giving out too much of my current system, your main objective is to get a decent GPU. The first 5 chapters of LoF was made on a 8 year old potato pc I bought a 2060 for. Renders took about 20-40 minutes each for that one, so it's fully doable to make a VN with sub par hardware.

Drifty

So... Xmas then? :) Renders look great - I'm curious what kind of hardware you're using and how long your renders take generally speaking. Hopefully I'll have time next year to try my hand on Daz3D - enjoying your novel got me intrigued in 3D rendering. Thanks for the update!

Marcase

Awesome news about potentially meeting release date and the look of things. Keep up the great work and enjoy your weekend
