Illustrated Dev Diary, June 25th, 2021

I really enjoyed working on Chapter 6 this week as I finally got a chance to dip into more of the more serious part of the story, and I have been steadily grinding away at posing and rendering.

I did notice that the 3090 vram temperature is at a steady 92C when rendering in 4k. After checking in with Kentyrr and Stoya who did test renders just to give me some referring values, I could conclude it is indeed a bit high. The GPU temperature itself is a very good 60C at 55% fan speed.

Therefor I'm not running 4k renders at night at the moment. It's not a big problem for now, as I'm posing more than I'm actually rendering. If I'm left in a squeeze with slow rendering because of it, I can just do them in normal HD (and the 3090 will be able to spit out about 20 renders an hour).

I expect to be able to go back to 4k relatively soon, as I hope to do some improvements to the temperature reasonably soon, and a big thank you to both Kentyrr and Stoya for taking the time to run checks on their end.

Numbers for now are 517 finished story renders (plus a lot queued up), and 5,174 animated frames.

If you're using Discord and enjoying the new profile banner feature, then I have a little bonus for you attached to this post. The Cece animation is optimized for the Discord banner, in case you want to give your Discord profile a little fix-er-up.

Other than that, enjoy the season, and stay safe.

The Surprim X has a really high intake in Watt. 420W if I am correct. Whereas the FE only uses 350W and other higher end 3090s use about 370W. With MSI Afterburner you can reduce the Watt intake … this should help a lot. To be honest, I would not have bought the Surprim. It is much too „overbred“.

First, it depends on what you mean by your gpu never goes higher than 65C. Technically, my gpu never goes higher than 65C aswell. It's the gpu memory/vram that has exceedingly high temperatures (it was ranging in the 92-96C area). I did a few changes. Removed the side-panel of the pc and that took off 2C. Pushed the fans from the factory 66% to 75% speed which shaved off another 4C (anything over 75% did not make further improvements). I underclocked the card. Not as much as I could, but still slightly. That shaved off another 2C. But still my vram is above what Nvidia claims will 'reducing the lifespan of the hardware'. It's somewhat annoying, as I bought the Surprim X, which is probably the most expensive 3090, and every owner of it seems to be reporting the same problem. Which can easily be fixed by replacing the crappy factory thermal pads with new ones (another 10C temperature reduction) - but I can't replace them without voiding the guarantee of the card. Seems water cooling is the way to go.

I am rendering realy heavy scenes in 4k and my 3090 never goes higher than 65Celsius. I had the problem though, when I had GPU and CPU eneabled for rendering, that my machine was heavily overheating. As soon as I disabled CPU and had only GPU (Cuda) enabled, the fans stopped going crazy and the temperature dropped to normal values. Don‘t use the Nvidia Gameready drivers. Use the ones specifically created for rendering. And if you bought a card that is already overclocked in the factory you might want to clock it down to default levels.

Core Collider

Yeah, saw this same thing happen on a YouTube video. Unfortunately the only thing that worked for them was to watercool the card. Nvidia is pushing these limits, but it would be nice to feel that your card won't melt down.

Boost the fan speed early and it should also help the VRAM temperature. You've really got nothing to lose by trying. There are several utilities that will let you make a custom fan curve.

Mr. Cranky

The GPU itself runs around 60-65C at all times, even on heavy load. It's the VRAM temperature that is the main problem, although those mining Ethereum or going full quality in 4k playing Cyberpunk have reported VRAM temperatures as high as 110C. The only thing I've read from NVidia is that having high temperatures will shorten the lifespan of the hardware. And that's not a fun thing to read when the hardware is priced at $3,400.

Drifty

The ambient temperature does affect the pc temperatures, although both GPU and CPU are running within the 55-65C at all times. This is the VRAM temperature, which by googling seems to be a NVidia problem.

Drifty

Per Nvidia the max operating temp for the GPU is 93C. Mod the fan curve to run up to 100% at 70C or so. Get the fans up to speed fast. Shouldn't be that loud but should help a lot.

Mr. Cranky

Maybe it's your overall cooling capability of the PC itself and ambient temperature.
