PSA: 2 Liters of Urine in the Bladder?! 😳

Yep, true story. A patient had two liters of urine retained in his bladder. That’s half a gallon!

Urinary retention from an enlarged prostate isn’t just uncomfortable, it can cause serious damage to your bladder and kidneys.

If you’re experiencing:

Please get your bladder and prostate checked.

Hey Tim, Thanks for the thoughtful share. You’re right on about PVR values. This gentleman did have added weight, which he even commented on hoping he’ll feel lighter once all that fluid’s out. Surprisingly, he wasn’t in pain, just felt a lot of pressure and bloating in his abdomen and overflow incontinence, for obvious reasons we later uncovered. In his case, it was due to prostate obstruction rather than neurological, but with that much chronic retention, neurogenic bladder is definitely a high possibility.

When I go see my urologist, they have me urinate and then measure something called post-void residual (PVR) via an ultrasound. i get a lot of anxiety over it. Just for sake of reference, A normal PVR is generally considered to be less than 100 milliliters (mL). In most cases, a PVR of less than 150 mL is considered acceptable. A PVR between 150 and 200 mL may indicate incomplete bladder emptying, while a PVR of over 200 mL suggests urinary retention. This video is darn near scary, this man had almost 20 times the normal PVR. Not only that, 1 ml= 1gram, which means he carrying around almost 4 lbs of extra water weight in his bladder. Poor guy. It sounds more neurological, and I really hope that he gets proper treatment and his MD finds something that helps... Again, as someone who had/has issues emptying the bladder, i can't imagine the amount of daily suffering. As far as prostate surgeries, the two most commonly performed for mild-moderate cases are Uroflow and Rezum. With his case, if hope that he gets on medication therapy ASAP. Again, poor guy.
