Living in a jungle villa and keeping the heads and ears of communists as trophies, Poe ran illegal missions into Mao’s China, shipped drugs for local tribes, and wound up a violent alcoholic. No wonder folks think he’s the inspiration for Marlon Brando’s insane Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.
