I told Emma a secret I harbored deep within. This was something no one else knew, not even my mother or Becky.
Are you serious? Emma exclaimed!
Deadly serious, he tried to seduce me, more than once. He's the biggest bully around too. His father is a big-shot city official. He gets away with everything.
Do you have proof? Emma asked.
I have my ripped T-shirt and briefs with his blood and body fluids on them! I said.
Why didn't you tell me? Emma asked.
It never came up, I did my best to forget it! I said. I didn't even think about it until just now!
What do you want me to do? Emma asked.
Tell Kevin and Jamal! Let the players decide!
Bree!!!
Like you said no one will recognize me!
A few well-chosen words on the field will trip him up!
Are you sure? Emma asked.
Just tell Kevin! I said.
Okay.... If you say so!
Emma walked to the bench. She whispered to Kevin and Jamal. The word spread quickly throughout the team.
Tim Bradley was the starting quarterback for the Hawks. Tim was my biggest bully going all the way back to third grade. Tim was always more flighty than most people knew. Tim wasn't just gay ( I have zero issues with gay people), he was a sadist of sorts.
When he bullied boys like me alone, he liked to pretend we were girls. He tried kissing me more than once. A few times he got very handsy with me. I fought him off more than once. I always left with a fat lip, bloody or broken nose. One time he cracked one of my ribs.
I never told anyone about it, mostly because he said he'd kill me. This was my chance to repay him.
Sure I could have told Kevin and Jamal about it, but they would wind up in jail. I didn't want that. If I had gone to school about it, they wouldn't have done anything. They swept everything under the rug when it came to Tim.
We kicked off to the Hawks. The biggest event of our lives had just begun. Kevin's teammates didn't use it at first. At the end of the first half, it was 21-20, and we were up by 1 point.
Mario caught the kickoff and ran out of the end zone. Seth and Chance performed two great blocks. Mario was knocked out of bounds at the Hawks 22 22-yard line. Kevin handed the ball to Matt. Matt found a hole and ran 22 yards for the touchdown on the next play.
28-20.
After the kickoff, the Hawks started running the ball, play after play. They burned up 9 minutes on a single drive. Tim was calling plays and they were in the zone. The Hawks were on our 30-yard line. The Hawks ran the ball, gaining 5 yards.
Lashawn Howard, our middle linebacker, whispered something to Tim. Tim twisted his head back at him. The very next play Tim went to hand off the ball and dropped it!
Third down and 10 yards to go for a first down. Tim's first mistake of the game. Tim threw the ball to his tight end, Lashawn intercepted the pass and ran 15 yards before being tackled by three Hawks.
Our offense took the field. We worked our way down to the Hawks' 45-yard line. Jamal and Mario ran deep. Jamal had two steps on the Cornerback. Kevin threw a beautiful spiral pass. Jamal caught it with one hand. Just after he secured the ball, he knocked it out of bounds at the 12-yard line. Matt rushed for 8 yards and was stopped cold.
Kevin faked a pass to Jamal and threw it to Mario. Mario was alone in the end zone. Touchdown!
The Hawks returned the kickoff for a touchdown on the next play.
Score 35-27.
There were 4 minutes left in the fourth quarter. We had to run out the clock.
We cheered our hearts out! For our fans and team. Kevin threw a short pass to Matt. Matt ran ten yards and was tackled hard by two hawks. The ball popped out after Matt went down. A hawk recovered it.
The red rules a fumble. (It was a bad call).
Tim and the Hawks' offense took the field, and Lashawn kept quietly teasing Tim every chance he got. Tim was 15 yards from the end zone. When Tim went to throw the ball. He missed his receiver. The Hawks settled for a field goal.
35-30.
The Hawks did an onside kick and recovered the ball.
The ball was on our 38-yard line. The Hawks had 55 seconds and 3 timeouts. Tim made two great passing plays moving the ball 32 yards to our 16-yard line. Lashawn teased Tim again. Tim threw an interception, caught Randy Beech, our weak-side linebacker. Randy ran 12 yards and ran out of bounds.
Kevin and the offense spiked the ball for the next 4 snaps. We won 35-30.
We had a hard-fought victory. Was it a little shady? Maybe! But Tim deserved it! He was one of the reasons I was bullied every day. Between swirlys and the humiliation he put me through. He had it coming. If he hadn't been such a bully, he might have gone to the state championship.
The following weekend we had a huge celebration at the country club. Every parent, guardian, foster parent, family, and student was invited. The members and local businesses sponsored the event. Adults in one ballroom the students in another.
It was a semi-formal occasion. I wore my black purple wrap dress. Becky and Alison came along with Ashley and her husband Robert. Katrina and Marcel came.
Kevin addressed the school.
Everyone! Everyone please!
I'd like to say a few things before we kick off this wonderful event!
First, I'd like to thank my teammates for being committed to this year's goal for a great season. I'd like to thank the dance team and cheerleaders for keeping up our school spirit all year. I'd also like to thank all of you! You have all done your part and more in supporting us.
I'd also like to mention something important going forward this year. I haven't seen it this year, I hope I don't. It's about bullying! Bullying may seem funny but it isn't! Bullying can cause severe psychological damage to the victim. We are a great school, and no one deserves to be bullied. We are better than that! If you're a victim, say something! Tell a teacher, tell a friend, tell me or my teammates! We want everyone to enjoy school! We are having a great year! Everyone deserves to have a great year!
Who's with me? Kevin shouted!
The crowd roared!
Emma and I hugged Kevin on the stage. We danced all night! We had a blast. Non-alcoholic Bloody Marys, Pina Coladas, and Strawberry margaritas. The whole school mixed it up on the dance floor.
A bunch of parents joined our party to watch Mario and Jamal show off their dancing skills. It was an amazing evening. We all went home with our parents. Becky and I were exhausted and went straight to sleep.
3 weeks later the day after Thanksgiving.
We arrived at the State Capital Stadium. It held over 50 thousand people. We were playing the Tigers. The media dubbed it "King of the Jungle Championship"
The Tigers were a slightly bigger school than we were. They scored over 500 points during their season. We scored 478, a season-best record for us. Both our defenses were stingy with points. 189 against us, Tigers 179 against.
Matt ran most of the day. He rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers rushed for 122 yards. Kevin threw 332 yards, 32 catches out of 39 attempts, and 3 touchdowns. The Tigers had over 350 yards passing with one interception by Lashawn, and he scored a touchdown.
We won a very hard-fought battle. It was Mario who put us over the top with a punt return for a touchdown.
Final score 38-36.
The field celebration was fantastic I was on the field celebrating with my friends when I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
I turned around, and my mother was there!
Mommy!!!!! I cried!
Baby!!!!! Mom and I hugged tightly. I forgot how much I missed my mother.
Where did you come from? How long have you been here?
I watched the whole game! You were wonderful! You girls were great! My Mom said through joyful tears.
We celebrated at Capital City Steakhouse. Emma, Tiffani, Rachel, Penny, and I. Our guys came with their parents. I sat between Becky and my Mom. Everyone was laughing and having a great time. I held my mother's hand every chance I got.
I had no idea she was coming. My Mom was working two jobs both overseas. She was promoted to Senior Vice-President of Sales for a Pharmaceutical company. She was also a liaison for marketing for L&S Productions.
She explained to me that her decent job turned into a full-blown career. While she wanted nothing more than to come home, she feared that her being around would hinder my development and current growth.
I thought about that for a minute! My life was extremely active. Most of my daily routines were not something a mother could help me with. Unlike most people, I require personal attention frequently. It was both a blessing and a curse.
Bree, darling! Remember when I said I couldn't afford to send you to college? She whispered.
Yes.... I hesitated.
I can now! You can go to any college you want to! I'll take care of everything! I'm so proud of you darling! Mom said as she hugged me.
I wept as we hugged. It was the best, warmest hug we ever shared.
Mom and I were never well-off or rich. My Mom gave me a decent life before I moved in with Becky. We didn't make the kind of money Alison or Becky makes. We lived in a little 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom house with a two-stall garage. It wasn't as plush as Becky's house or the mini-Mansion Alison had. But it wasn't bad.
My Mom was proud of me. It made all my struggles and sacrifices worth it for me. I was proud of her too! She was limited in her job with me at home. While I missed her, I also could see she was taking advantage of every opportunity to advance her career like she always wanted to.
Mom stayed in the adjoining room next to Becky. Kevin and I were across the hall together in the hotel. Becky explained it to my Mom.
Becky, are you sure about this? Julie asked with concern. They aren't engaged!
True, Julie! But they are 18 years old! Brianna needs regular affection twice a day! She and Kevin are careful, Brianna is on the pill! They are also in love!
It seems so wrong! We couldn't get away with this when we were there age! Julie said.
Also true! But Kevin has been the perfect gentleman! He has done everything Ashley and I have asked of him. I've seen firsthand how much he cares for her. Kevin worships the ground she walks on.
I can see that, but still! Julie said.
You trust me, right? Becky asked.
Of course! Julie said.
You trust Ashley, right?
Absolutely! Julie said.
Trust me now! Becky said.
I know, but!
No buts! Julie! Becky said. Your daughter needs this like we need to breathe. She's done everything asked of her. She's getting straight A's in school. She has a full social life, friends and she is as good as cheerleading as you and I were!
Relax, Julie! They're good young adults now. Becky said.
If you say so! I trust you! I guess I'm going to have to get comfortable with the idea.
You don't have anything to worry about! I've trained her well! Becky said with pride.
Saturday morning, Mom and I went to the mall in Capital City. Everyone came with us. We separated from the adults and dragged our guys through half of the stores.
The girls and I were having fun! The guys not so much. We agreed to meet them at the coffee island in an hour and a half. The girls and I hit Victoria's Secret and Fredrick's of Hollywood.
We went to Macy's department store. I bought two very tight sweater dresses. One black with a pink hip belt and a purple one with a black hip belt. Emma, Tiffani, Rachel and Penny followed suit!
We changed into sweater dresses and went to the island to meet them. We caught a lot of attention walking through the mall in our very tight sweater dresses. We got there first. We grabbed the big corner booth and waited for our guys.
A group of four guys our age approached our table. They were big and a little rough looking. All of them, unshaven in clean but slightly worn clothes. All of them smelled like stale cigarettes or pot!
Hi girls! We've never seen you here before! The one in the middle said.
We're here with our boyfriends and parents! We leave tomorrow! Emma said.
What a shame! We'd love to show you around! Maybe show you a sight or two!
No thanks guys! We won't be here that long. Besides our guys should be here soon. Thanks anyway! Emma said.
The guys sat down. The leader sat right next to Emma. Another sat next to Penny on the other end.
No offense guys, but our guys are going to be here any minute! You should leave! Emma said.
The leader tried to put his arm around Emma. The other guy did the same thing to Penny.
Eww! Stop! Penny exclaimed. You smell like a wet ashtray!
Stop! Emma exclaimed! She's right! You guys stink!
You little tease! The leader said. He raised his hand to slap Emma.
All of a sudden our guys showed up! Kevin grabbed his arm and twisted it , putting him on the floor. Seth grabbed the other guy's shoulder and squeezed.
You're in our seats fellas! Jamal said.
The four of them looked up at our guys. All of them were shocked
I tried to warn you! Emma said smugly!
You should leave! Now! Kevin said.
Or you can leave in an ambulance!. Mario said.
Aw come on, guys! I wanted some exercise! Matt said.
We're leaving! Said the leader.
Great timing, Bro! Emma said.
Nice dresses! Said Jamal! No wonder you attracted their attention!
It wasn't their attention I wanted to attract! Emma said with a smile!
You have my Attention! Mario said looking at Rachel.
Wow! Seth said to Penny.
Penny smiled!
We got up and sat next to our guys. Our parents joined us loaded up and to the hotel for the night. I spent the night with Kevin.
My mom expressed her reservations on the subject. I explained it to her with Becky that my condition could only be controlled with "physical affection". I explained it word for word the same way Doctor Stone did. While my Mom wasn't thrilled about the idea she understood.
The next morning Becky and I took my Mom to Capital City Airport. I hugged my mother tightly. I missed her so much. It was difficult to let go.
Bye mommy! I love you!
I love you too, baby girl! Behave! I'll be back for your graduation! Mom and I hugged one more time and kissed each others cheeks! I watched her disappear into the terminal. I wanted her to stay but I knew she couldn't. I cried for about ten minutes. Becky held my hand the entire time.
