Only recently we've noticed that appendix removals in countries without good sanitation results in more frequent and severe gut infections. The theory goes that the appendix is a reservoir for "good bacteria" that can replenish after infections. In western countries where taking the appendix out was common they didn't notice a downside because hardcore infections like c.diff are much more rare these days, but when they exported the practice to the developing world there has been issues. It's why these days they try to treat appendicitis with antibiotics as much as possible before having to remove it as a last resort. Source: My PhD in gut bacteria
