Re: autism - I felt like commenting on the bit where you guys were talking about autism because I'm a (diagnosed) autistic adult myself. I agree with the idea that people are peddling everyday normal behaviors as "autistic traits," which can make it seem really confusing and arbitrary. I think there is also a fundamental misunderstanding in the public about what autism even is. When I told my dad I was autistic, he literally said "I don't know what that means". The concept of it being a "spectrum" doesn't mean it's a spectrum going from "a little quirky" to "unable to function"; it's referring to the wide array of symptoms that vary between autistics. It's why you'll often hear, "if you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person." We still have to meet the established DSM-5 criteria, but no two autistics are exactly alike or have all exactly the same symptoms at the same severity because 'autism' is a term professionals use to describe very closely related, intertwined neurodevelopmental disorders. So it's a spectrum and there is lots of variability, but WITHIN the bounds of the disorder. You can't be "on the spectrum" unless you're autistic because it's not a scale from low to high; you're not "a little pregnant" because you have swollen feet, for example. Everyone has some quirks, but one of the key features of autism is that it causes a significant degree of impairment to our functioning, so it's frustrating because it undermines autistic struggles. I also think another thing is that girls have infamously gone undiagnosed or have been misdiagnosed with other things because they are good at hiding their autism, so now that more and more adult women are getting answers for what's "wrong with them", there's a lot of backlash and eyerolling because they seem "too normal" or must be exaggerating. Sorry for the essay lol I just had some thoughts! Love y'all
