Oddly, it was a thing in Turkey too - something popular with the very rich (since it was so out of reach of the average working class person). And class being _everything_ there, there is some flexing. There was even an expression, “Sushi Turks,” for people who ate sushi because it was “in” to be seen eating it. Then again, Starbucks was that way for a while too.

Those lyrics will haunt me forever, with the image of all the horrified white high schoolers singing it to our parents.
