As someone with a degree in classical voice, I can't disagree with your takes on opera; the emphasis on big/famous voices over quality performance is frequent and unfortunate. More contemporary shows can be easier to get on board with since they're set in a familiar context and drop some of the (arguably unnecessary) traditional opera elements. If you're interested in looking into it again, Street Scene by Kurt Weill is a GREAT production and incorporates more modern theater techniques-- I think there's a good version on YouTube
