2025-11-05 16:16:28 +0000 UTCOne of the things the movie and film series as a whole fail to convey is Ginny's character development. She remains a prominent side/background character in the books. By the sixth book/their sixth year she has blossomed, and she is considered one of the top four most popular and attractive girls throughout the entire school. Even Draco comments on how attractive she is in the books, though he resolutely states he still would never touch her because she is a "blood traitor". That's why Harry starts noticing her and thinking of her as more than just his friend's little sister.

2025-06-11 01:52:52 +0000 UTC38:40 In the books, the Sorting Hat usually sings and/or gives a speech to the students every time before/after the House Sorting. Horace Slughorn is actually a Slytherin. It gives us a glimpse that the Slytherin house may have a ton of bad evil wizards, but there are many Slytherins who are quite honorable like Slughorn. In a way, they represent the polar opposite of Gryffindor. They are equally as intelligent and brave as Gryffindors, but like Slughorn and Snape, they are more subtle, passive, and quiet, but are equally strong in their talents and abilities. In other words, anyone in a House can be good at Quidditch or Potions or Charms. 42:30 Its not explained but Ron and Harry had a free period, they were goofing off looking at girls in the hallway. 1:05:50 It hasn't been explained well (at all) in the movies, but Hagrid is one of the best teachers to be near a child who has been cursed, due to being half-giant. Because of his Giants blood, certain spells "bounce" off of him, including offensive spells like Stupefy, and he may have some resistance to Curse magic.

2025-05-25 22:25:31 +0000 UTCThat's one of the things this movie got right. My biggest issue with this movie is that it feels like it tries too much to be a romantic comedy, when it's quite dark story, and it really messes up the one romance that matters - Harry and Ginny. But this movie definetly has it's moments.

2025-04-20 22:39:39 +0000 UTCwell just ask yourself: Does Snape have to be a good guy to be a great character? I don't think so. It's a bit more complicated than that. The best characters are always like Snape. The usual good guys are often very boring. There's nothing wrong with loving Snape.

2025-04-11 18:10:38 +0000 UTCAgreed. Also, not sure if it was intentionally played as super awkward for laughs, or if the actors had zero chemistry. Either way, their romance - and Ginny's hilarious personality - is portrayed much better in the book.

2025-04-08 19:43:44 +0000 UTCI agree with you. While I do think this one has a lot of issues as an adaptation, I actually think it has arguably the most personality just as a movie of maybe the entire franchise. There's something nice about how low-stakes parts of this movie are, just the characters living their day-to-day lives in a way we get a lot of in the books but the movies sadly had to trim down.
Andrew
2025-04-08 02:41:10 +0000 UTCThis is a nitpick but the way the movie portrays the Unbreakable Vow bothers me. In the book it's Narcissa who asks Snape all the questions while Bellatrix acts as the "Bonder." Whereas the movie has Snape still holding Narcissa's hand but Bellatrix is asking all the questions so who is he even making the vow to? Also it made way more sense for Narcissa to ask it as DRACO'S MOTHER.
Andrew
2025-04-08 02:37:18 +0000 UTCFun fact: Helen McCrory (RIP) who played Narcissa Malfoy was actually originally going to play Bellatrix in Order of the Phoenix but had to drop out when she got pregnant so they brought her into this one to play the sister.

2025-04-08 02:29:18 +0000 UTCSofie early on in the movie: "I love how Harry looks up to Dumbledore, he really admires him." Me knowing how the movie ends: "Goddamnit HP franchise, stop breaking this woman's sweet, wholesome heart!!"

2025-04-08 02:27:11 +0000 UTCThis is probably my favorite book of the series. And while the movie leaves out a ton, I enjoy sort of the relationship focus over the "mission" focus because the next movies are heavy; so having sort of a funny/quirky beat (for a while, because the end is not funny or quirky lol) kinda feels nice. Is it great storytelling, eh, but I think almost there was no way to win with this one unless they also split it into two parts like book 7. There's just too much-- you run the risk of having the whole film being memory diving which for a casual audience expecting a fun year at school, especially coming off of Umbridge, I don't think would be well received. (OBVIOUSLY we are all fans here so of course we think it would be fine. My dad never read the books, only watched the movies and loved it and was not confused on anything other than Snape = HBP.) I do think they tried to balance it out, it just was not very successful in some ways from the POV of a book fan. It's the season of the HBO show I'm most looking forward to. Thank you for your reaction Sofie!

2025-04-08 00:04:34 +0000 UTCAh another great reaction. This one is one of my favourites, although it’s so tragic. It’s always crazy to me when I finish the movies to restart them and see just how young and innocent it all started out! Can’t wait for you to see the rest of this journey, don’t forget there is also an HP reunion video, it’ll help you end this chapter emotionally it’s so beautiful. ❤️

2025-04-07 20:35:05 +0000 UTCI also don't like this movie because he's compeletely ignored history of Voldemort and his family, other reasons too playing role. It's really sadly. I like too book Harry Potter and Half-blood Prince, so over this hates this movie.

2025-04-07 20:31:49 +0000 UTCThis is my favourite book in the series but the screenplay really does it dirty. I know a movie can never convey an entire novel but it totally butchers Harry and Ginny’s relationship, ignores important context about HBP and instead wastes so much time focusing on the stupid Ron and Lavender romance subplot. One of those movies where I wish I didn’t know what I was missing.

2025-04-07 19:06:22 +0000 UTC(Spoiler Free) Great reaction once again! You are right in that the HP World has so much tragedy in it but that's what makes the story so beautiful as a whole! I cannot wait for you to experience how it all ends :) Regarding Dumbledore, he did know of Draco's attempts to murder him (besides the vanishing cabinet) but could do little to stop him because he knew Voldemort would kill Draco if he failed or if they learned that Dumbledore had caught on. Also you were right when you said Voldemort knew what Horcruxes were when he asked Slughorn, his real question was if it was possible to split your soul more than once, 7 times to be exact. This is what Dumbledore needed to know. In the 2nd book he knew immediately that the diary was a horcrux when Harry showed him but he had no idea how many Voldemort made which was a huge problem. That's why that memory was so important. The majority of the 6th book deals with showing us a bunch of memories regarding Voldemort, each leading Harry/Dumbledore that much closer to discovering what the horcruxes are (the movie only shows 2 memories).

2025-04-07 18:32:12 +0000 UTCThere are so many more informations in the books. All about the horcruxes an what they are an where to find them. Only in the books you will find the full story 😁

2025-04-07 17:04:31 +0000 UTCThe other comments pretty much already explained everything, but I have to underline how much more beautiful Harry and Ginny's relationship in the books is. We see them interacting and becoming closer in the fifth book already, when Ginny is the only one who can calm Harry down when he was upset about being able to look into Voldemort's mind -- as she was possessed by Tom Riddle in the second book, they can relate to each other in a way that both Rom and Hermione can't with Harry. In the 6th book, it was also quite hilarious because Harry was terrified of Ron finding out that he was falling in love with his sister lol
Poison Ivy
2025-04-07 16:12:49 +0000 UTCAlso something else that’s not mentioned in the movies is that Fred and George were able to open their joke shop thanks to Harry. He gave them the prize money he won from the Triwizard Tournament, Harry felt he didn’t need the money and thought the twins could make better use of it to pursue their dream.

2025-04-07 12:35:23 +0000 UTCI love your reactions, can't wait for the next one ❤️ Spoiler free: The Black family is one of my favorite parts of the books, but the movies leave out a lot of important details. Some things are mentioned but not very good: The Black family is an ancient and prominent pure-blood wizarding family obsessed with blood purity, as Sirius explains in the fifth movie. Bellatrix and Narcissa are sisters, but they also have a third sister, Andromeda. So the 3 sisters are cousins with Sirius and his brother. Andromeda is disowned because she marries Ted Tonks (he is a muggle-born wizard), so her name is burned off the family tapestry which you can see in the movie. Together, Andromeda and Ted had Nymphadora, their daughter, but she likes to be called Tonks (the girl who is together with Lupin). So this means that Draco is also related to the Black family through Narcissa, he is the nephew of Bellatrix and Andromeda, also he and Nymphadora are cousins. A common question is how Sirius, despite being disowned, still has money and owns the Black family house. This is because his uncle Alphard left Sirius gold in his will. Alphard was disowned for supporting Sirius, and his name was burned off the family tapestry as well. Another interesting detail is the Black family’s connection to the Weasleys through marriage. This is a quote from the books said by Sirius to Harry when they talk about his family "The pure-blood families are all interrelated.... Molly and I are cousins by marriage and Arthur’s something like my second cousin once removed."

2025-04-07 12:19:27 +0000 UTCI'm so hyped for DH part 1. (Not rushing, Sofie, just saying!) This is the weakest film for me but there are still moments that make your jaw drop. I've been waiting to see how you reacted to Snape and you didn't disappoint. Sorry for the trauma 😂 Welcome to the painful world of Potter heads.

2025-04-07 10:27:27 +0000 UTCEven though Harry Potter will always be my favorite movie series, I would always prefer the books. I understand that you can't say and show everything in a 1h30/2h00 movie, but there are so many characters, events and relationships that have been rendered non-existent or ruined. 1/ Ginny In the books, we can see that Ginny is a young girl with character, she doesn't let herself be pushed around, she is powerful, intelligent, smart, funny, loyal etc. In the movies, she is reduced to a girl we barely see and hear, who just watches Harry in silence, who ties his shoelaces and feeds him and that's it. In the books, Harry and Ginny have several moments together where we see that they are friends. It is also implied that Ginny is trying to forget her feelings for Harry by being interested in other boys. In the 6th book, we see their relationship slowly building. We see Harry showing more and more interest in her and realizing that he is in love. We see him being jealous of Dean, Ginny's boyfriend. His relief when they argue and break up. Their first kiss is much better in the book than in the film, with Ginny running to Harry, full of joy that they won a Quidditch match and Harry kissing her in front of everyone. Then, at Dumbledore's funeral, Harry explains to her that they cannot be together because he does not want Ginny to be in danger for being the girl he loves. We see Ginny being sad and hurt but again, she shows understanding and courage. 2/Remus and Tonks Again, it is a relationship made invisible. Tonks is in love with Remus who, despite his own feelings, keeps rejecting and hurting her because of her werewolf status. It was only towards the end of book 6 (following an event between another couple that I won't talk about yet but who was also made invisible) that Remus began to give in. Even if he continued to be a coward afterwards... 3/ Snape Snape is a complex character We learn that he was born to a witch mother and a Muggle father. His mother was submissive and weak and his father was violent (if I remember correctly, he was responsible for the death of his wife). Snape never had a happy childhood and never knew affection. Then, at Hogwarts, he was the target of Jame and Sirius who never missed an opportunity to humiliate him in front of everyone. It is only towards the end that we really discover who he is, the reason for his choices and his behavior etc.

2025-04-07 10:11:49 +0000 UTCTo answer your question if the multiple horcruxes weaken Voldemort, it doesn’t necessarily weaken his magic. What it does is split and destroy whatever existing humanity Voldemort has each time a horcrux is created, both mentally and most notably, physically. What I love about the Half Blood Prince book is that each passing Voldemort memory describes him as progressively less handsome and more snakelike in appearance. It’s the splitting his soul made manifest; gaining power in such an inhumane way that he literally becomes non-human.

2025-04-07 08:53:07 +0000 UTCOn a personal note, the gasp you released when Snape killed Dumbledore took me all the way back to 2005, when readers everywhere gasped at that “Avada Kedavra” for the first time. I was 9 years old. 😊 And then we had to wait two years to find out what happened!

2025-04-07 08:44:49 +0000 UTCLove this reaction again! Here’s my usual lore comment: == Looking for Horcruxes Harry isn’t able to detect “traces” of Horcruxes in the book; that was added by the film. The ring is fully dead in the book (which makes more sense IMO, since Harry was able to touch the diary without seeing anything). Instead, Harry and Dumbledore work off of clues provided by the memories. The book version contains more flashbacks to Tom Riddle’s past, which Dumbledore collects as memories from people Riddle met. We find out that Riddle was _very_ interested in collecting rare objects, especially those connected to the founders of Hogwarts (Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin). Dumbledore and Harry reason that Riddle chose objects of significance for his Horcruxes. This gives them clues on where to look. (We also meet Riddle’s mother and father, and see his post-Hogwarts career – very interesting stuff, highly recommend!) Dumbledore says this about Lucius Malfoy and the diary: “No doubt [Voldemort] thought that Lucius would not dare do anything with the Horcrux other than guard it carefully, but he was counting too much upon Lucius’s fear of a master who had been gone for years and whom Lucius believed dead. Of course, Lucius did not know what the diary really was. I understand that Voldemort had told him the diary would cause the Chamber of Secrets to reopen because it was cleverly enchanted. **Had Lucius known he held a portion of his master’s soul in his hands, he would undoubtedly have treated it with more reverence** — but instead he went ahead and carried out the old plan for his own ends: By planting the diary upon Arthur Weasley’s daughter, he hoped to discredit Arthur and get rid of a highly incriminating magical object in one stroke. Ah, poor Lucius… what with Voldemort’s fury about the fact that he threw away the Horcrux for his own gain, and the fiasco at the Ministry last year, I would not be surprised if he is not secretly glad to be safe in Azkaban at the moment.” == Ginny and Harry’s Relationship Ginny had more character development in the books, and the relationship was built up more. In the book Order of the Phoenix, Ginny reminds Harry, when he is having visions of Voldemort, that Tom Riddle had possessed her too. They ride the train home together, and she gives him a chocolate egg to cheer him up during Easter. In fairness to the film writers, Order of the Phoenix is about 260K words (870 pages in the American version) and Half-Blood Prince is about 169K words (652 pages). They had a lot of subplots and character development to cut. == Some Thoughts on Draco Draco’s induction into the Death Eaters is well-done, because it mirrors the psychology of teens who get inducted into gangs and extremist groups. They do so initially for a sense of purpose, as a rebellion against the system and for a community that accepts them. But then they come to realize the cost, and it gets harder and harder to leave. (I say this as a former high school teacher who had a few gang-affiliated students.) == Other Things Cut From the Film Book 6 begins with several conversations between Cornelius Fudge and the Muggle Prime Minister, showing that the ordinary British government does have some contact with the magical world (but the magical world is considered top secret). Malfoy says to Filch, “Get your hands off me, you filthy Squib!” The term “Squib” is explained in book 2: it’s a person with magical parents who is not a witch or wizard, sort of the opposite of a Muggle-born. The Weasleys’ house fire gets extinguished and the damage repaired. So does Hagrid’s. “Why is Ron watching from behind?” HMM, GOOD QUESTION! I swear, the movies shaft Ron for no good reason. In the book, Lupin and Tonks’s attraction is not revealed until the end; it is only hinted by Tonks casting a wolf Patronus (Harry thinks she is in love with Sirius at first). In fact, Lupin resists her because of his condition, but eventually gives in. Snape called himself the “Half-Blood Prince” for two reasons. 1) He had one wizard parent and one Muggle parent – in the Wizarding World, that is a “half-blood”. 2) His mother, the magical half of his family, was named Eileen *Prince* before getting married. Thus, Snape was proud of being “half a Prince”. (Hermione actually discovers Eileen Prince’s name when trying to figure out who the Half-Blood Prince is in the library.)
Noah Goldman
2025-04-07 08:39:01 +0000 UTCSnape was born to Eileen Prince, a witch Pureblood, and Tobias Snape, a Muggle, making him a half-blood (hence the name, "Half-Blood Prince"). It doesn't get mentioned in the movies so i mention it here.

2025-04-07 08:23:29 +0000 UTCThey pretty much butchered everything. The castle's disapparating magic, (not) destroying the ring, telling Harry to "stay down" instead of immobilizing him under his cloak .... it makes no sense at all.
Julia68yt
2025-04-07 07:59:43 +0000 UTCProbably my least favourite of the movies which is disappointing considering how good the book was, but the biggest gripe I have is how badly they butchered the Harry/Ginny relationship. The book did it beautifully but it was just a mess in this
Razzer95
2025-04-07 07:53:56 +0000 UTCI hate how much the script to this movie f's up the magics of the castle. Dumbledore disapparating from the tower makes all of Draco's efforts completely pointless. If it were possible to just dis/apparate onto school grounds why use that blasted cabinet at all?
Julia68yt
2025-04-07 07:52:05 +0000 UTCThis whole book/movie was to establish the facts that Voldemort likes to collect items and that he made planned to make more than one Horcrux. Dumbledore put it all together. Also it explains that, going from murder to murder, the splitting of what was left of Voldemort became more and more easy.
