Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban /Movie Series Reaction

Ah, back in the day, when if I saw a movie that was based on the book, I could be pretty certain that when I read the book there would only be minor changes. I wish filmmakers in America today still respected people's work enough to faithfully adapt it rather than stuff it with far left ideology and ethnicity and gender swapping. 4:40 This actress did incredible, btw. She portrayed Marge exactly as described in the book. And the character herself is horrid! Brilliant actress. 8:52 Lighting is EXTREMELY important. But can only be effective if everything else works. 9:39 OMG! You know what I just realized!? Sirius was barking and growling to get Harry to draw his wand over the street. That's how you flag down the knight bus. He was looking out for Harry even here! 10:24 My family quotes "'Chta fell over for?" all the fricking time! 12:35 I love the shrunken head! Such an iconic character that we never see again! 17:18 That's done on purpose I feel. And I think it adds to it. It could of used a bit more light in shots like this one. But yeah, it works. 19:40 4? No, honey. She has Percy, Charlie, Fred and George, Ron, Bill and Ginny. That's 7 Percy is a prefect at Hogwarts and Charlie studies dragons in Romania. 21:41 CAN YOU IMAGINE if Molly hadn't gotten Scabbers to Ron in time!? Imagine if Scabbers had stayed behind! LOL! 25:17 Lupin is by far the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher while Harry was at Hogwarts. He is one of my favorite characters. I do resent the movie for the "soul sucking" on the train. I get they needed a visual to show you that it was effecting only Harry. But they could've done it in so many different non-confusing non lore-breaking ways. 28:31 I think I must say this here. RIP to Richard Harris. The OG Dumbledore. He gave off Dumbledore vibes so well. He will be missed. Michael Gambon does a great job as well. There is one line in particular in the 4th movie that is just an odd translation, we'll get there. Michael's voice is more commanding than Richard's was. Richard gave off Wise grandpa mentor wizard. Whereas Michael gives off more of a powerful voice for lack of a better descriptor. 30:45 Dumbledore was against them being at the school at all. He finally was able to convince Fudge to not permit them on the school grounds and only be posted outside the perimeter. 31:10 OMG! The movie would make you think it was Dumbledore's decision. It isn't 34:54 TRELAWNEYYYY!!! We love her antics! Amazing actress! Emma Thompson of all people! 44:30 Buckbeak is best boy! 45:17 What happens here is entirely Malfoy's fault. The problem is that while Buckbeak is proud, Malfoy is arrogant. Which gets him cut. 51:25 This scene is why Lupin is such an amazing DADA (Defense Against the Dark Arts) teacher. He is so engaging with the students and ACTUALLY knows his stuff and teaches them! 55:30 This scene also. Actually Lupin is amazing in every scene! Who am I kidding! 55:48 Lily's eyes were GREEEEEEENNNN!!!! I will never get over this injustice! 59:32 Practical door. I love when they used to actually make the props and sets for movies instead using green screens and cgi sets for almost every shot. Gives it a real feel. 1:01:40 The entrance followed the delivery of the line "turn to page 394" is so good. I walk around going "Page 394" for no reason all the time. 1:04:46 Can you imagine trying to see the Snitch let alone catch it in this weather? 1:05:54 Yeah, the dementors are NOT supposed to be on the grounds. 1:06:55 Notice Dumbledore didn't use his wand to cast that spell. That's how powerful he is. 1:10:30 How did they get the perfect twins to play Fred and George?! They are absolutely perfect! 1:12:35 Dumbledore sent him the cloak. James Potter "left it in Dumbledore's possession" before he got killed. 1:33:22 I've always loved that Harry felt comfortable enough around Lupin to tell him that he saw Peter. He must have learned from last year that keeping things to yourself isn't always the best. 1:35:54 Ah yes one of those times where TRELAWNEY had an actual prophecy. 1:42:30 Even though I know what happens, watching this bit still gets me. My anxiety RISES! 1:43:06 I love that you can make a joke at this point. Got me laughing. 1:44:18 Unsung unseen hero of this scene is Crookshanks. Hitting the knob on the tree that freezes it. Also, Crookshnks is no ordinary cat. He is a Kneasle. Basically a magical creature that is super intelligent. Near human intelligence. 1:48:50 Sirius' actor is incredible! They got the right man for this job! Gary Oldman! Incredible! Also, I just realized how much of a trip this scene is for someone's first time watching if they haven't read the books. 1:50:41 And this kind of banter is why they hated each other in school. It's so funny though! 1:53:20 I ask again. WHAT would have happened if Peter hadn't gotten on the train!? MOVIE OVER! Lol! 1:55:47 He was desperate to trap Peter. In his desperation he didn't mind accidentally hurting Ron in the process. But afterward (here) he is sorry about doing it. 1:58:35 Thing is, Dumbledore will convince Sirius to not let Harry live with Sirius even if this movie ended with the Ministry of Magic clearing Sirius' name. For reasons... 2:08:15 Believe it or not, I have one gripe with this scene. The Stag is meant to trot across the water without disturbing it and chase the dementors away. But it's a minor gripe as the visuals are incredible. 2:09:39 I love Ron so much! This line gets me every time! 2:13:20 When a Witch or Wizard is really gifted, the ministry of magic will afford that student a time-turner if they have proven to also be trustworthy. 2:18:45 Absolutely he is aware of what is happening. 2:22:50 Because of learning that Peter was alive. Plus, Snape would've had to brew it. 2:24:40 Buckbeak is BEST BOY!!!! 2:26:23 WHY NO STAG?!??!?? I don't understand why they didn't make the stag run out here! I can't get over this! It's amazing cinematography, it's incredible music, and the visuals are awesome! But it's supposed to be a stag running across the lake chasing the dementors away. 2:29:29 GREEEEENNNNNNNN! 2:31:19 I do like this actor's portrayal of Dumbledore, it's just, when I read the books, I always read Dumbledore in a kind, gentle old man voice. Along with some snark, but... This actor does really well don't get me wrong. I just prefer the OG actor. It may sounds ridiculous to say that I wish he hadn't died, but there it is. 2:34:13 In case it wasn't clear, Padfoot is Sirius, Moony is Lupin, Wormtail is Petigrew and Prongs is James Potter. They made the map together while they were students. As well as studied to become unregistered animagi to be with Lupin on full-moons. Among other mischief. 2:35:00 If I remember correctly, in the book, the Firebolt was sent to Harry at Christmas after the Nimbus 2000 got destroyed. Sirius sent it to him and sent it anonymously but McGonagal confiscated it and took it apart to make sure it wasn't hexed. I love this movie! It never got old when I was a kid and it still never gets old as an adult!

2025-06-17 00:48:16 +0000 UTCThis is my favorite HP film, and the only one I think gets even better on second watch. You're right that it has a darker vibe, but it fits the story and executed really well imo. Also, even with everything that's been omitted from the book, there's still so much foreshadowing and little details you might only catch on second viewing, which I love. Really glad you enjoyed it :)

2025-05-19 18:38:57 +0000 UTCI love this film - easily my favourite of these, but I seriously have an issue with Ron saying "he's got a point you know" when Snape insulted Hermione. Book Ron would not say that, he was always fierce in defence of his friends.

2025-03-18 21:31:25 +0000 UTC19:45 Actually, she got seven kids: Ginny, Ron, Fred, George, Percy, Charlie and Bill also hypogrif aren't dangerous. They are just proud as long as you don't insult them you are fine. And Hagrid is the teacher of magical creatures Hypogrifs are one of them. So it's normal that he shows them.

2025-02-14 22:21:43 +0000 UTCHermione didn't cheat 😮 She used the time turner to take extra classes she wouln't be able to take normally. Because they took place at the same time as some of her other classes. It just shows how dedicated she is in learning everything there is to know. And McGonagall gave it to her for that purpose alone.

2025-02-04 16:12:53 +0000 UTCto be fair, Dumbledore wasn't the one responsible for keeping the Dementors around the school. It was the ministry that arranged it. Dumbledore was fighting a lot with the minister before the start of the year about that but as powerful and important a figure he is, he still couldn't convince Fudge to change his mind about that.

2025-02-04 12:35:14 +0000 UTC2:13:30 No, it’s not cheating. Hermione used the Time Turner to take extra classes. She’s a nerd, not a cheater.

2025-02-04 01:36:01 +0000 UTCWas so excited when you noticed right off the bat the tone change! I remember reading the book when it came out and feeling the same thing, all of a sudden, things seem more scary and adult. Can’t wait for the next one!!! I read the 4th book in a day and a half, and I remember going cross eyed at 5am in the morning just trying so hard to finish the book 😂

2025-02-03 22:10:48 +0000 UTCI believe the scene in the Shrieking Shack up until Remus transforms is one of the very few parts of the books that the movie script did not alter or shorten. Like you said insanely well directed and acted, too.

2025-02-03 20:53:32 +0000 UTCMy favourite of the Potter movies. Alfonso Cuaron's is just a phenomenal filmmaker. Everything about this movie fits brilliantly and the pacing is incredibly consistent. And the darker tone matches the darkening of the themes as we go along in the series.
Ricardo B,
2025-02-03 20:18:42 +0000 UTCFrom this point on you really should read the matching book after watching each movie. (Or better, listen to the british audio books with Stephen Fry.) It will really help a lot with connecting the dots. So much is left out in the movies that only little seems to make sense and gets lost in the action. But especially the little things are what matters most in understanding the bigger picture.

2025-02-03 18:13:32 +0000 UTCWanted to clear some things for Sofie, but you did it perfectly, Esme! :) Just wanted to recommend Sofie to read the books. They are amazing! And my favorite for more than 20 years. You will find there more details and stories which make sense to the whole picture. It might looks like this is books for children but they're not. I've read it more than 10 times each and every single time I can find something new for myself there. And thanks for an amazing reaction Sofie, I enjoyed to watch it with you :)

2025-02-03 17:46:03 +0000 UTCI loved this reaction. I think this movie is my favorite of them all. But I'm also very excited for you to watch the rest of the franchise knowing what's still to come.

2025-02-03 17:31:30 +0000 UTCA scene where Alan Rickman plays off of Gary Oldman, yeah, acting wise it doesn't get much better than that.

2025-02-03 10:31:49 +0000 UTConce again AMAZING reaction!! here's some more info and stuff from the books! the weasleys actually have 7 children, not 4. i assume you were thinking of fred, george, ron, and ginny, but there's also percy (the one who yells "excuse me, i'm head boy!!" during the blockage on the stairs), charlie, who trains dragons in romania, and bill, who works in egypt as a curse breaker for gringotts (i assume this means he gets through ancient curses to discover and collect treasure but idk) in the books not a single dementor attacks harry until he starts trying to protect sirius at the lake, it's merely being in their presence that makes him faint. dumbledore was extremely opposed to the dementors because of their depressing aura but agreed to host them because he was told they would stay off the grounds and the ministry was pushy about it, but if anyone had been attacked without provocation dumbledore would never ever have allowed it. he would have gone up against the entire ministry and won just to keep them from endangering his students in that way ron doesn't agree with snape about hermione being a know it all in the book, he yells at snape and gets himself detention. it's also not hermione who says "you'll have to kill us too," she just whisper yells at harry to get away from sirius, while ron jumps up on his broken leg, swaying and pale, and says that. the tree was planted and the shrieking shack was built when lupin came to hogwarts so he could have a secluded place to transform and the tree would keep others away. makes me respect the tree a bit honestly, it's protecting students from a worse fate than getting smacked away from the passage. (it doesn't start going ham on harry and hermione until they go at it multiple times) dumbledore kept them so he could accommodate any future werewolf students that came to hogwarts. the sounds lupin made when transformed spurred rumors the shack was haunted, which dumbledore encouraged to further keep students away. once lupin came back to hogwarts though, snape was there to brew him a potion called wolfsbane. the potion didn't keep him from transforming, but it made it so that he kept his human mind during the full moon and could just ride it out in his office without endangering anybody. (probably why hermione attempted approaching him, she thought he could've been himself) only, that night, when he saw sirius and peter on the map with hermione, ron and harry, he left in a hurry to save them and left the map behind in his office. snape came to deliver the potion and saw the map laying open, which is how he found them. when james, sirius, and peter found out that lupin was a werewolf they decided to become animagi to keep him company during the full moon. (werewolves exclusively attack humans unless provoked so they'd be safe) so they'd run around the forest and the grounds, lupin as a wolf (mooney), peter as a rat (wormtail), sirius as a dog (padfoot) and james as a stag (prongs) they created the marauders map at school and it's the only thing like it of its kind, which is why lupin knows about it but snape had no idea. dumbledore is influential, but not influential enough to get sirius off on his own. sirius' supposed murder had an entire street full of eyewitness accounts that made it look like he did it. (peter cut off his finger, blew up a muggle street killing 12, transformed, and left sirius standing there in the rubble where he was found very soon after by magical law enforcement, aka aurors) you can kind hear him arguing with fudge about excecuting buckbeak and fudge won't back down, he especially wouldn't with someone like sirius who had caused such a panic to the public hermione was going back in time to take more classes, not to retake any or get any extra help, so i don't think it'd be considered cheating. she just wanted a fuller schedule than allowed for. she'd have two classes scheduled every block, take one, rewind time, then take the other, and the end result on the world is that she got to be in 2 classes at once. i also don't think it would only be offered to hermione, but any students like her who are extremely responsible, trustworthy, and thirsty for knowledge. lupin was bitten when he was 5, after his father, who worked for the ministry, said something anti-werewolf. a vicious man called fenrir greyback positioned himself outside of lupin's family home on a full moon so that he could turn lupin once he transformed. he left lupin with his family for revenge but his raison d'etre was turning young children (through the same method) who he could then kidnap and groom into helping him overthrow magical society. he doesn't believe werewolves should be equal to wizards, he believes werewolves should be the master magical race and that, by turning enough people young, he can make it happen. they unfortunately don't go into this in the movies despite him showing up but he's a terrifying villain in the books.

2025-02-03 06:02:18 +0000 UTCI read the book 16 times so far 😂😂 It's my favorite. And when I watched the movie I was so happy that the greatest actor alive, Gary Oldman, played my second favorite character in the franchise. He's so phenomenal. This is in my opinion the most well directed movie of the franchise. Alfonso Cuaron is brilliant and I still wish he would have directed the other ones as well. His tone and atmosphere fits this story so well . It's a very unique style and I love all of his work. Especially Children of men. This is also the best score in my opinion. John Williams did a brilliant job here. Unfortunately it was also the last Harry Potter movie he did the music for. He's a genius.

2025-02-03 05:42:39 +0000 UTCIt's funny how you called the Shrieking shack scene like a "high school reunion." I totally read it as that and I love how you could tell that Snape and Lupin & Sirius all went to high school/Hogwarts together from the way they talked to each other. This movie is for sure darker in tone then the first two. While that is in part due to the new director, it is also due to the fact that each book/movie just gets darker and darker. Can't wait for the 4th movie!!!!!!

2025-02-03 04:46:58 +0000 UTC(Spoiler free) So glad you enjoyed it! I loved that Harry gained insight into his parents' lives through their friends this movie, its something he never had before since the Dursleys refuse to mention them completely. By the way this movie and none of the following ones mention this directly, but in the 3rd book it explains that the Marauder's Map creators were the following friend group at Hogwarts: Remus Lupin (Moony), Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail), Sirius Black (Padfoot) and James Potter (Prongs). To answer some of the questions you asked, the Time Turner was given to Hermione only after approval from the Ministry with strict guidelines that it can only be used for lessons. That's why Dumbledore feels the need to give her permission to use it to save Sirius. For the dementors being stationed at the school, that was a Ministry decision that Dumbledore couldn't overrule. They were stationed in other wizarding locations as well. Can't wait for the following reactions, and yes expect things to get darker with each movie :)

2025-02-03 04:21:54 +0000 UTCGlad you enjoyed this movie. Personally, I think alfonso cuaron is by far the most skilled director to work on Harry Potter. The cinematography, shots etc of this movie are the best in the series. However, a lot was cut from this movie for pacing. It’s understandable since this book is longer than the first two (this problem gets worse the further you go on in the series, particularly in the next movie). This leads to a few movie-only plot holes which I will try to fill. None of this is spoilers: The makers of the Marauder’s Map are Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Those were in fact the nicknames of Lupin (moony) Pettigrew (wormtail) Sirius (padfoot) and James potter (prongs) who were all best friends and wrote the map together after years of exploring the castle after dark. That’s how Lupin knew how the map worked - he helped write it. James, Sirius and Peter all became animagi (meaning they could turn into animals) in order to keep Lupin company while he was a werewolf (werewolves only attack people, not animals, so by turning into animals they could stay by his side and look after him when he transformed.) Nobody knew about this, not even dumbledore. Lupin didn’t tell dumbledore about Sirius being an animagus (or the map) because he was ashamed at breaking dumbledore’s trust, running around the school at night with his 3 friends while transformed into animals, when dumbledore was the one who lobbied for him to be able to attend hogwarts in the first place. Peter was of course a rat, and Sirius was a huge black dog, as shown in the movie, but James was a stag when he transformed. Harry inherited his stag patronus from his father. The whomping willow was planted over the entrance to that passageway the year Lupin came to hogwarts as a boy. He was the first werewolf to attend hogwarts, so dumbledore planted the tree to guard the entrance. At the full moon, Lupin would sneak into that passageway, so he could transform in the shrieking shack, far from other students. That’s how Lupin knows how to pass the willow and where the passageway is. The shrieking shack, described as “the most haunted building in Britain” is not actually haunted at all. The noises the locals heard were not from ghosts, but from Lupin as a werewolf, scratching and biting himself because there were no humans around to bite. Eventually his friends kept him company as animals. In the book, it is Lupin, not Harry, who sees Peter Pettigrew on the Map, thus realising he is not dead. He sees him immediately before they all leave hagrid’s hut (in the first timeline). He immediately runs to catch Peter, and accidentally leaves the map open on his desk. When Snape arrives to deliver Lupin’s Wolfsbane potion (which he has been making every month) he reads the map and sees where everyone is, that’s how he knows where to find them. Also that’s why Lupin doesn’t take his potion - he runs off before it is delivered. Harry and gryffindor win the quidditch cup this year for the first time in the series but that was also cut for time. After the events of this book Hermione decides to return the time-turner and drop some subjects so she can have a normal timetable. It’s not shown in the movie, but hermione has been increasingly hysterical all year due to stress and tiredness from travelling through time and doing a million classes. That’s why she flips out in divination and punches Malfoy. She decides it isn’t worth it. (Which is why the time-turner isn’t in any more movies) Finally, Sirius uses his position as Harry’s godfather to give him permission to visit hogsmeade starting next year. For the rest of the series Harry can visit hogsmeade without getting in trouble.
