Breaking bad 5x04♡Uncut Reaction &Review ♡

Comments

I had the exact same reaction. On first viewing, I think a lot of people root for Walter because they remember how sympathetic he was in Season 1. Also, he's the main character and the show needs him to succeed in order for the show to continue. Since we the viewer want the show to continue, we therefore also want Walter to succeed. On repeated viewings however, it becomes a lot easier to view Walter's actions objectively and to see him as the "bad guy".

When I first watched this show, I rooted for Walter. I felt sympathy for him because I remembered him as he was in the first season. Personally, when I watched it the first time, I neither liked nor disliked Skyler, but I wasn’t too surprised when I learned that many people disliked her because I felt sympathy for Walter. But when I watched it a second time, Walter looked like the devil to me from the very first season because I remembered him as he was in the final season. And I felt so bad for Skyler.

Unfortunately, saying there was "some hate" towards Skyler on the internet is a huge understatement. I still have never seen so many people hating on a TV show character before. Even the actress, Anna Gunn, (who I think gives a brilliant performance, by the way) got several death threats. It's completely insane. On the bright side, there have always been a lot of people defending Skyler as well. And I'm really glad to see a lot of Skyler defenders here in the comments. 😊

True. They're beyond delusional. Also they conveniently forget that Skyler is extremely unhappy and suffering for most of the series. They basically hate on a depressed, borderline suicidal character. Reminds me a lot of the people who hated Sansa in Game of Thrones. I can't even begin to understand the utter lack of compassion these people must have.

I also think that she had a way out when they were about to divorce but She chose to stay and be involved and these are some of the reasons that I can think of: Walter made it clear that he's not gonna stop providing for the family, so the kids will be using the drug money anyway. She thought that if she gets involved she can make sure that this won't blow up in Walt's face and their kids will never find out about Walt's activities. She still loves him and believed Walt when he said he's doing all of it for the family and because of the cancer so she thought that if push comes to shove he will stop if his work is endangering his family.

It's usually men who identify with Walt and the fantasy of becoming Heisenberg that hate Skylar. They see her as an ungrateful and malicious wife trying to control a man who will do anything to support his family. I think that like Walt they're too deep in the power fantasy to see the reality of the situation lol.

I side with Skyler here, and I was also the person defending her in the comments a few weeks ago. However, just to play devil's advocate, there are a few reasons why I could see some viewers not supporting her: - She blames Walter (and herself) for what happened to Ted, even though what happened to Ted was his own fault because he tripped on a rug. This is a scenario where the viewer is privy to information the characters don't know: Skyler doesn't know Ted tripped, so she naturally assumes Walter had him beaten up. Understandable on her part, but we (the viewer) know she's wrong. - In season 3, she had a chance to get out, and a divorce lawyer even advised her to get out as soon as possible, but she chose to stay. In Season 4, she contemplated taking the baby and leaving, but again chose to stay. Some viewers may think that makes her complicit in Walt's activities. - She willingly benefits from the fruit of Walt's labors, and even uses his money to get herself out of a jam, but then condemns how he makes his living. Some have argued that makes her a hypocrite, and that she should have found a way to get herself out of the situation rather than digging herself in deeper by taking over the car wash. Like Saul Goodman, she may not be in the lab cooking meth, but she directly benefits from it. Like I wrote earlier, I side with Skyler and find her to be a tragic character in a tough situation, but I can see both sides. That's the beauty of the show in my opinion: It never tells you who to root for, and the characters are so nuanced that you could write essays about why they're in the right or in the wrong.

As a guy I 100 % agree with you. I find it very telling that most of the guys who hate Skyler don't have a problem with Marie (and of course they adore Walt). Skyler is everything in all a good person, but a "bad" wife (by misogynist standards, of course); Marie is a horrible person, but a good wife. Really shows what kind of mindset those guys have. They like the spoiled, kleptomaniac narcissist just because she's a loyal, caring wife, but they hate the smart badass woman who dares to stand up to her husband, even though he's a murderer who has been gaslighting her for years. 😑

Kevin Karst

The reason why so many people hated Skyler? One word: misogyny. Anna Gunn knocked it out of the park this episode.
