Not sure if you're aware yet or if it's been discussed but the actor, Mako, who voiced Iroh died after season 2 and was replaced by Greg Baldwin for season 3. At the end of the episode "tales of Ba Sing Se" the creators paid tribute to Mako

What? Spirits are spiritual they feel when something is bad of good. They don't have to know it. Even humans who are spiritual are better at feeling if something is right or wrong. So a spirit should be able to know that. For the same thing if you drink poison you don't have to know what poison it is or that it is poison your body will tell you that's bad. A river spirit should be able to feel that the pollution is bad for her.

My guess is she didn‘t know that the factory would pollute the river which would prevent her from helping. Factories are a very new and modern thing that only the Fire Nation has so I guess buy the time she figured out what it is and what is is doing, it was already to late. Plus spirits are hesitant to interfere with human business. But yeah since it was never clarified all we can do is try to make sence of it. That is my take😂🤷🏻‍♂️

Almin

But it isn't protected. Because if the painted lady did protect the village before the factory came there, how did the river got polluted in the first place? Because is she protected the village/river she would have stopped the pollution before it started.

Thomas

I agree with Almin. I think painted lady is held back by the pollution. Its upto the town folk to keep it pollution free thus keeping painted lady available and ready.

It seems like you forgot alot of stuff. The part where Toph says she learnt earthbending from badger moles was told in season 2 because she ran away into a cave and met them where they bonded over being blind and used earthbending as a way of interacting with the world. Also the part where Toph blushes when Sokka returns shes shown a few times in book 2 having a thing for Sokka. She was holding his arm when they were going to Ba sing Se and also she kisses Suki thinking its Sokka. Lastly the extension of the sword quote by Piandao was from Zuko when he taught the little boy in Zuko alone how to use the swords.

LegendarySuperSaiyan

33:09, you heard something similar when Zuko was teaching that one kid how to use his dual swords in s2

If the painted lady is strong enough to protect the village. Why didn't she stop the river from being poluded? And those soldiers maybe a scared for a spirit. But the moment they find reinforcement or a general or higher. I don't think they are scared of spirits. And I am a huge Katara fan. But this is just a moment she made a big mistake. Even though it's based in something great.

Thomas

But they won‘t tho. Cuz now the Fire Nation thinks the Town is being protected by a powerful spirit. And turns out it actually is, the pollution of the river prevented the Painted Lady to help but now she is able and ready. Should the Fire Nation return, which I don’t think so, the Painted Lady is ready to protect them. So actually Katara is a hero.

Almin

There is also something you missed. After Sokka got the lotus tile from the butler, the butler closed the doors and you could see a lotus on the doors too. The ''camera'' zoomed in on it.

Thomas

The only problem I have with the Pained Lady episode is that Katara is painted like some hero. But to be fair, they only defeated those soldiers for now. They will return later and get revenge on the village. Of course, this is not included in the show. But if we are 100% honest, we all know that; that's how it's done in a military dictatorship. So Katara's kindness doomed the village. Sokka was right when they killed the Firelord and replaced him with someone better that person can make sure the village is saved for real. We as humans want to make choices based on emotions but sometimes emotions cloud our judgment like what you see in this episode. Sometimes we need someone who can make a logical choice instead of an emotional choice.
