I was a kid at the time. The episodes hit emotionally... but it was a lot for a kid to handle. The S2 episodes were released weeks apart and were so dark and depressing compared to S1, and they would get rerun over and over instead of new episodes. It made it hard to stay engaged. At the time, I was more affected by the Appa and Momo vignettes than Iroh's, because I didn't really know what it was like to care for a child (I was 9-10) but I had met several animals.

This episode showcases why this show is so good. The characters get room to breathe and just live. I'd watch a whole series of these characters just living their lives

These two episodes back to back is a crime. Iroh’s vignette shows the quality of the writing and character development. A three minute rollercoaster that breaks me every time. I know it’s coming and it’s still full tears 😭. I’d love to hear from the people who watched the series as kids and are rewatching as adults. Did any of this hit for the intended audience? The writers went so hard for season 2 in the most beautiful and heartbreaking way. And the official title should be Appa’s complex PTSD.

Goes to show how good the writing and animation is. To draw out emotions from animated characters with relatively little dialogue required patient character building. 🥺 Damn you, ‘Leaves from the vine.’

Appa’s lost days received a Genesis Award from the Humane society in the category of “Outstanding Children’s Programming” showcasing its accurate portrayal of Animal Cruelty

The voice actor of Iroh was Makoto Iwamatsu (Mako). He had cancer and passed away shortly after recording the audio for this episode.
