Korean has multiple forms of speech. Informal is used to address people with whom you are same age or younger or very close friends. Formal speech is used to talk to older people, with someone you don't know very well, at work and etc. For example if you are saying "Hello" and you have to use formal speech you will say "Annyeonghaseyo" , if you are using informal speech you will say "Annyeong". Formal speech usually has "Yo" ending. In this case they both are same age so the can talk in informal speech, but since they weren't close they were talking in formal. Dropping formal speech in this situations also indicates that you want to get close to that person.
