Looked like you had quite a bit of a time about some of the themes of the movie initially...This movie shows how anxiety works so what you are seeing would be his thoughts... one of the best things about this movie TBH.. not once did they discuss and literally mentioned about their anxiety but they are showing how they feel about it, literally painting a picture through animation. I am glad that you enjoyed the movie :)

also he wasn’t getting bullied before hand, he simply made fun of her because she was an easy target but then suffered the consequences when everyone turned on him to avoid punishment. that’s why he ended up losing his friends and taking full responsibility

Omg Yessssss!! I absolutely LOVE this movie 🥺💜 I would also VERY highly recommend watching 'Your Name' which is a big favourite of mine! It's another very emotional but absolutely amazing movie and JK actually loves that movie too as well as this one 😍💖

Very true! I also want to add that in a lot of anime you'll get used to hearing characters confessing their love by saying: "Daisuki" and "ski or suki" which translates to i like you. It's very rare to hear the word i love you at all in japan. It's not a word to throw around lightly so you'll hear daisuki being used in most cases. However it's extremely impactful to hear "aishiteru" which is the literal translation of i love you. It's meant for SERIOUS matters and if you feel that strongly about someone. I remember reading a manga and a character said aishiteru and i myself was SHOCKED. Like wow, they must really really treasure them.

I recently tested positive for covid and have been cooped up in my room all day. This will be a great way to keep my mind occupied. 😊 I was thinking of giving you two a trigger warning for this movie as i know both of you have dealt with these types of topics in your own personal lives but i feel like regardless, you probably would've wanted to watch it anyways. Silent voice is super heavy and worth watching for the messages it sends out. The art is gorgeous too as expected from this studio. You guys seemed confused about that quick scene of ishida's mother where it showed her ear bleeding and missing an earring. It's not touched upon in the manga or in the movie itself however, there is a theory which seems extremely likely. It is stated that while she went over to apologize to nishimiya's mother with her son, the two mom's went over to talk privately. It is possible that ishida's mother realized they didn't have enough money to pay back for her hearing aid that he broke, she was a single mom, working at a hair salon and also looking after her daughter's child. So with the little money they had, she also decided to rip out one of her earrings out of respect for him ripping out nishimiya's hearing aids. Some cultures, japan especially, have the concept of saving face which is sort of like honor. If you or a member of your family commits an offense to someone else, in order to save face and retain your personal honor, you must make amends and you must assure those amends are as equal as possible to the offense committed. Throughout the rest of the movie, she is seen only wearing ONE earring. Your name is beautiful too! Let's keep the anime movies coming! 😊💕 OH don't get me started on kyoto animation josh, they're literally one of the best animation companies ever and have created some of the best and most well known anime in the industry. To mention a few, the holy sad trinity CLANNAD, AIR, and KANON 2006, violet evergarden, haruhi suzumiya, etc. Unfortunately an arson attack happened in 2019 and the fire killed 36 people while injuring 33. The studio is still trying to recover from this devastating attack. I really do believe in signs after death. It happens all the time and the one moment that sticks out in my mind personally is when my grandfather passed away. We were standing around a fire doing a ceremony and i felt the need to look up into the sky and noticed an eagle circling over our heads and it stayed there for a good few minutes. My grandfather is a native tribal chief and the eagle was an animal associated with him so seeing that brought me comfort. Knowing he was there watching over everyone.

This movie is very important to my sister and I. My older sister is deaf so her and I relate a lot to both the sisters. I do definitely recommend the manga since it is longer and the characters are much more developed story wise. I do like how the movie flowed for the story line, they did well condensing the series.

I really want to thanks you for your reaction to this movie, it's one of my favorites move ever, as you say, is a really painful message, but is beautiful as well, for me it's just amazing how they were able to treat so many difficult topics as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, etc, and give you an amazing lesson. Just a couple of clarifications, he was bullied after he bullied her, his friends turned against him as he said to the teacher that they bullied her too, but they just trow him under the bus and blamed him for everything. Josh was right, she didn't actually said I love you, she meant I like you, which in Japanese would be "Suki" and he understood "Tsuki" which means moon, it have a pretty similar pronunciacion, hence his confusion. And last, the origami cranes that Kawai gave him almost at the end, it is an asian belief that if you have the patience to made a thousand cranes, your would be granted a wish, so they basically were wishing for him to recover, but as they couldn't made the thousands she hesitated if to give it to him or not, but he still wanted it.
