In Korea, Family name "성 : Sung or Seong" is not a common surname unlike Kim, Lee or Park. And if a man and a woman are having the same surname which is comparably rare surnames, there is a high probability that the roots of the family are the same, and there is a high probability that they are quite close relatives. And, Bora's words about the law change on "No marriage is allowed among the same surname and the same family origin" are all true, since it's a drama that's very realistic. It shows the background of that time, from the little props and the music, from the costumes to the political background. The Korean law "동성동본: No marriage is allowed among the same surname and the same family origin" is in short, a law to prevent incest marriage. As it said by Bora on the drama, it was temporarily allowed in 1996 and then, over time, it was completely repealed in 2005. Still, incest marriage is legally impossible like many other countries, but the restrictions have weakened a lot. To put it simply, now, even if the two person is the same surname and the same family origin, it is legally possible to get married if it is a distant relative of the third cousin or more distant relatives. -Before the amendment: No marriage is allowed among the same surname from the same family origin. -After the amendment : (1) No marriage shall be allowed between blood relatives within the third cousin (including blood relatives before adoption of the adopted child). ②Marriage cannot be made between a spouse of a blood relative within second cousin, a relative within second cousin, a relative of a blood relative within cousin of the spouse, or a relative who was such a relative. ③Marriage cannot be made between a person who was a blood relative of a foster parent within the second cousin and a relative of a foster parent within the cousin.
