Blacksmith Vice

Hi all. Just a quick filler video for you guys on Patreon. I took a break from what I was working on for a couple of nights and cleaned up this old post vice.
The vice was made by W. Gilpin. I had no idea there were any maker marks on it until it cleaned up.
I’ve dated the vice sometime between 1864 and the early 1900’s. The earlier date is based on the word SOLID which is stamped into the barrel. ‘Solid’ means the thread inside the barrel is solid, as apposed to a wound coil brazed in. This feature was patented by Peter Wright in 1864 and became the standard there after. The later date is based on the fact that W Gilpin Co was gone by the 1920’s.

Exactly - I found myself saying things like "A wiser man would have kept track of where this was located..." and "But that's difficult to get hold of in NZ, so I used this..." in the driest manner possible. Great video!

Great to see, thanks for sharing!

Only way this could be better would be with the trademarked GC voiceover humour 😂
