really enjoyed this. i'm an Internet old fart, so the rise & fall of platforms, and your history of spam, are more like walks down memory lane; i was here for it, although also sometimes not. anybody who liked this may find Cory Doctorow's Enshittification theory interesting, such as this talk: https://youtu.be/rimtaSgGz_4 he characterizes the cycle that platforms go through something like this: 1) be good to users, to attract more and grow (we are so good to you and better at privacy than $old_platform); 2) abuse users to be good to business customers (look at all the data we have about our users; hey why don't you post links to your articles here); 3) abuse business customers to claw back all the value being created and allocate it to themselves (guess what, now that people only find you through us, we'll stop showing your stuff unless you post the full content here, or pay us; no advertisers you can't know what is a fair price, etc.); 4) turning to shit is complete; fold or "pivot" to try the cycle again. also gets into issues of anticompetitive behavior and regulatory capture and basically the platform version of pulling the ladder up (Facebook wrote tools to harvest data from MySpace's apis, and then once they were on top, pushed for legislation to prevent such api interoperability calling it "misuse"). he references a term (that he did not coin), "Felony Contempt of Business Model". fortunately he doesn't stop there, he goes into some potential ways to try to turn the tide... which may or may not have potential, but at least means his talks on the topic try not to end with "we're irrevocably fucked".

Been having a very similar conversation with my husband on going for sometime now. Interlaced with other existential aspects of our imperial dystopia that seem to be circulating our corner of the radicalized algorithm. Which is vital for keeping it together with such a cartoonishly hypocritical narrative being pushed as reality. Looking forward for the next half! Appreciate your art 🤘🤘
